Noam Chomsky: Trump Is Using Pandemic to Enrich Billionaires as Millions Lose Work & Face Eviction

As millions of people in the U.S. lose work and face eviction due to the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic, the 1% have seen a massive increase to their wealth, with Amazon founder and world’s richest person Jeff Bezos recently adding an estimated $13 billion to his net worth in a single day. World-renowned political dissident Noam Chomsky says the corporate windfall is yet more evidence that the U.S. is run “essentially by the corporate sector” for its own profits. “They’re just running wild.”

I guess the big issue there (or one of them) is everyone's continued reliance on fossil fuels...and, the big "sub"-issue relating to that is having the courage to take on the oil companies and other entrenched, fossil fuel-related industries. I think you have hit the nail on the head. Rapid technological development in this information technology revolution has enabled the ultra fast growth of leading edge companies to greatly enrich a small number of owners further balloning the wealth gap. This same economic phenomenon occured during the industrial revolution in most notably the UK and the US. Whether capitalism consequently fails this time in the US or adequately corrects is another question.

In feminist theory, kyriarchy (/ˈkaɪriɑːrki/) is a social system or set of connecting social systems built around domination, oppression, and submission. The word was coined by Elisabeth Schüssler Fiorenza in 1992 to describe her theory of interconnected, interacting, and self-extending systems of domination and submission, in which a single individual might be oppressed in some relationships and privileged in others. It is an intersectional extension of the idea of patriarchy beyond gender.[1] Kyriarchy encompasses sexism, racism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, classism, xenophobia, economic injustice, prison-industrial complex, colonialism, militarism, ethnocentrism, anthropocentrism, speciesism and other forms of dominating hierarchies in which the subordination of one person or group to another is internalized and institutionalized

This is not the country my relatives from Ireland, Scotland and Wales and the Austro-Hungarian Empire arrived to greet before the American Revolution. What a tragedy events have grown to represent. There's plenty to be proud of in regards to the physical geographic landscape of this nation, our decent and honest citizenry, although we are destroying our country environmentally. However, I've seen the middle class dream fade away, the number of people who are able to do simple things such as have a pension, take a vacation, or be able to take sick leave without fear of losing their jobs, have diminished with such velocity and momentum since the 1970s. The career and housing opportunities have evaporated for most people. We can't trust our emails, cell phones or computers, as we've been . . . and are . . . spied upon by an out-of-control internecine military-offense-surveillance labyrinth of incalculable criminality. We have few true journalists. We resort to Wikileaks for legitimate information because journalism has foundered as mass media conglomerates assumed power to control the airwaves. So called "journalists" are mere . . . mercenary messengers . . . promoting and inculcating corporate major-political party propaganda to keep the sleeping masses fighting the wrong enemy--many of whom fail to exhibit wide discretion and even less enthusiasm to think skeptically and question. I really do despair. If it weren't for the Internet--an unexpected mass medium the criminal elite never expected to potentially disrupt their ever lengthening grab for unlimited economic and class power--we would have little recourse as citizens to vent our frustrations with our present dismal and increasingly discouraging state of affairs. This political and economic system has . . . got . . . to change in fairness and equity to the middle class who is descending into the loathsome abyss. It is the Middle Class who pays the bills. Our criminal elite wants it destroyed in favor of pure and unmitigated economic slavery and a large poor and destitute class predominating whom they can control.

@ThatFeel8080 This sort of thing about "access to the internet", relative wealth comments are fashionable for some people to parrot. I think a mature perspective on people having internet or access to it, is to realize that people regard the internet as essential to their lives, it's a utility just like electricity and gas. It irritates me but I see homeless people with smartphones. Homeless people who have smartphones is a thing and I imagine some of them (many of them) have internet too. This talk about "access to internet" serving as proof that one isn't poor is just stupid. You shouldn't say it.
