Noam Chomsky: Under Trump's tinpot dictatorship, corporate power rules all

The U.S. is in the throes of an unprecedented economic, political and public health crisis - but billionaires have been reporting record-breaking profits since COVID-19 hit in March. "It is a country run essentially by the corporate sector," says Noam Chomsky. "They are running on all stops to try to maintain what they've succeeded in largely getting through the neoliberal period the last four years: enormous concentration of wealth." Chomsky adds that this is an extraordinary historical moment unlike any other, distinct from early 20th-century fascist regimes. "The fascist systems were based on the principle that the powerful state under the leadership of the ruling party and leader should basically control everything … including the business community." In this sense, Chomsky argues, Trump is not a fascist. "We are almost the opposite. It is the business community controlling the government," he says.

So let me see if I can make it even simpler. The two party system is an illusion. They all have one common goal and that is to obtain money, power & control by any means. The republicans blame the democrats and the democrats blame the republicans and that leaves us to busy to focus on what's really going on. None of these politicians have our interest. As a disabled homeless Veteran for the past 19 months, I am furious with this President's actions. His desire to disperse this nations wealth to the rich, while the poor suffer more and more. His lack of any real coordinated national covid-19 response causing unnecessary deaths across our country. His ability to lie and surround himself others that will also lie for him. His ability to ignore the constitution when it benefits him. This list could go on and on.. Meanwhile I am broke, stranded near Kingman Arizona, due to the inability to tow my derelect nearly 50 year old 10 foot trailer with my van due to mechanical issues. It's 110 degrees this week... I had been living on disability with housing assistance, prior the Donald Trump's presidency, but his desire to gut programs of funding and make it easy for large corporations to line their pockets. The large apartment complex I was living, along with many other residents , was sold to a huge rental property company. This resulting in notice they would no longer accept housing assistance. They informed those affected we would have to pay their rents in full without assistance, or move. I found that searching for an affordable apartment was going nowhere. The corporate takeover of many affordable housing options, so as to rent for more money and profit. My Section 8 housing assistance voucher expired before my rental contract with the Paragon/ Nolan Apartments in Mesa did. I left my apartment spotless, moved out prior to my final date, and still the kept the deposit. I have been homeless since. As a Air National Guard Veteran, I don't quality for any VA benefits, so I have been on my own to deal with homeless. I now just pray this election everyone votes to remove trump

I've seen a lot of people talking about the Supreme Court without ever mentioning the difference between the Originalist approach to interpreting the Constitution and the Living Constitution concept. Basically, Originalists would determine what the Constitution meant to the people at the time it was written and they would apply it to a new concept whenever it emerges. Obviously, the founding fathers didn't know that the Internet would become a thing, but they wrote the 1st Amendment, therefore expanding freedom of speech in this new field must be done in accordance with this principle. Living Constitutionalist would essentially look at the Constitution as an evolving organism and would try to determine whether the concept stated in the Constitution changed its meaning from the time it was first written or not. That's what makes the whole difference between justice being liberal (Living Constitution) or Conservative (Originalism). Now putting the nomination process aside for a moment, after spending a significant amount of time researching the philosophical approach of SCOTUS justices, it seems, at least to me, that the Originalist approach is the most consistent approach to interpret the Constitution. Especially since the Constitution takes away a certain aspect of a Democratic process. For example, most of the people might not agree with your speech or religious practice, but you have the right to these things regardless because the 1st Amendment says you are entitled to these freedoms. There is a clause in the Constitution preventing cruel and unusual punishments. This clause can mean different things based on your idea of interpretation. The death penalty might be cruel and unusual nowadays, but back in the 18th-century death penalty was not cruel or unusual, in fact, it was the only penalty for a felony, what I’m saying that regardless of your idea of the death penalty, the idea that it can be abolished by the judiciary is simply not right. It is ok to dislike the death penalty, convince your citizen, petition your congressmen, and abolish it through legislation; after all, the Constitution does not require the death penalty. But sadly there has been a significant amount of pressure on the court with the idea being that the concept of cruel and unusual punishment has evolved over time and the death penalty must be abolished not through the democratic process, but through the judicial interference of 9 people, who are in the views of the activists, are more well equipped making the decision than the US public. The same thing goes with Roe v. Wade, although I must add that abolishing this decision is simply not visible at all, only 1 justice currently sitting has agreed to even discuss Roe v. Wade again, while others are opposed to it due to the precedent that lasted almost 50 years. However, to make a decision on Roe v. Wade the court at that time created a completely new procedure called Substantive Due Process that established that the SCOTUS has a right of simply defending certain freedoms without them ever being mentioned in the Constitution. If the Supreme Court sees some rights as crucial in accordance with this principle, it can just interfere without taking to account the text of the Constitution. This is a significant expansion of the Supreme Court, and it is quite clear that Founding Fathers or people passing the 14th Amendment didn’t intend to include a right to abortion in the Constitution. The people of the US never voted on whether abortions should be legal or not, and that doesn’t feel like a correct way to make a change in society. You can clearly convince other people and pass a law protecting the right to abortion or even amend the Constitution to enshrine it in it, but again in this situation Court curbed the democratic expression of the people and decided it on its own. Eventually, I want people to be more aware of the processes that are taking place in the SCOTUS. A lot of the time people are looking at the Court through a lens of a Legislative or Executive branch (Whether the President should make a nomination and whether the Senate should confirm it) but it is important to remember that the Judiciary is its own branch with its own ideas and concepts. If you are interested in becoming more in touch with the SCOTUS routine, I highly recommend watching some interviews of late Justice Antonin Scalia. I know that he is not very well-liked in the liberal circles; however, a lot of things that he says in regard to the interpretation are so profound and almost non-negotiable that you might find that Originalism is not a terrible concept after all.

While I don't disagree with Mr. Comsky's analysis of the wealthy and the corporations; I do disagree with calling Trump's administration a dictatorship. It's just not even close to that per the definition. I have the deepest respect and admiration for Mr. Chomsky's intelligence, pure love of country, and the desire to pass on his knowledge. Will be tough to find another like him.

Billionaireism is a unique and recent phenomenon given that in 1960 there were very few of them. Today there are over 2000. What they do is not capitalism; it's growth through acquisition and/or liquidation of smaller competitors, often through nefarious practices that they can get away with due to government deregulation (the billionaires now regulate governments). That is why your local town no longer has a bank, a newspaper or a TV station, and that is why your local farmers are being forced off.

The only thing exceptional about America is how exceptionally profitable it is for corporations and the 1%. From 1950 to 1980 there was an overall increase in upward socioeconomic mobility for a vast majority of Americans, from 1980 till now it’s shown a drastic and sharp decline. This is a fleecing, a robbery. The wealth inequality in America is worse than what it was prior to the French Revolution. As long as people stay compliant, indifferent or just plain ignorant this will continue.
