The choices are still pretty boring. I don't see either party seriously looking to scale back nuclear weapons, and tensions with China and Russia. Or seriously addressing the climate catastrophe about to crush humanity.

I think of most politicians like WWF characters, they take role and build a fan base and they profit by putting on a show. The struggle is the paycheck and the more emotional the public is made the more they make. The politicians that actually do anything are in the middle working the bureaucracy but that’s boring and so no one knows their names.

Its only Armageddon because the media tells you it is. When in reality it's just uni-party globalist vs populist who want to bring jobs back to the people. The globalist elite don't want that to happen because they will lose a cpl % to the bottom line so they scare the sheep into believing the sky is falling. You are just perpetuating it. No reason to be scared unless Biden starts WW3.

True, Chomsky is wise and erudite. But no one can be right about everything and no man should be treated as God. As a guru, or a teacher, yes. But not as God. It is a fact that the current president is not Donald Trump but Joe Biden. And we are in a crisis under Biden, not under Trump. It could be argued that Trump will lead to a bigger crisis, and I agree that this argument has force. And yet, it is only an argument. What is happening under Biden is a FACT. We must never put our own thoughts above fact.

A functioning government will inevitably address social unrest. Whatever the cause, economic inequality is one. There are countries where society coheres better than America. It is worth considering how their national institutions achieve better results for their citizens. Remember that a perfect system is probably unattainable because we humans are not perfect.

Jeffrey Epstein helped move $270,000 for renowned linguist Noam Chomsky and also paid $150,000 to Bard College president Leon Botstein, the Wall Street Journal has reported. According to the newspaper, and also confirmed by Chomsky and Botstein, the late sex offender and financier had financial dealings with the two academics and had met with them multiple times. In 2018, Chomsky asked Epstein for help with a “technical matter” regarding the disbursement of common funds relating to his first marriage, the Journal reported. Meanwhile, in 2016, Botstein received checks from an account linked to Epstein that amounted to approximately $150,000, the Swiss American conductor and Bard College president told the Journal. Botstein told the Journal that Epstein had designated him as a consultant on the payments and made them appear as if they were fees for consulting work, which Botstein said he did not do for Epstein.

Rahul Gandhi was never sent to jail he was just disqualified from the Parliament that too on the orders of the court . Infact recent elections in one state was won by his party . So chomsky is flattley wrong that Modi is creating Hindu ethnic state . India is a Hindu state governed by a secular constitution just like America is Christian country run by the constitution. And Modi cannot do a damn if people don't want anything to do since Indian Supreme Court is most powerful federal court in the world even powerful than US Supreme Court since here Judges appoint among themselves to who will be next chief justice of India. So clearly you can see no executive control over judiciary and they are pretty much free to do anything that's speaks a lot about their independence. So I guess chomsky should come out his lefty bias too see things in even !!

Very interesting and thought provoking. I’m 80 and it’s a bit disturbing to hear that some of “my presidents” chose to contribute to business instead of to quality of life. I’d like to hear Professor Chomsky briefly evaluate the presidents - and - give some opinions on the mechanics of how a pro-business president gets the job instead of a quality of life president. Thinking before writing this, I’m reminded that Eisenhower (upon retiring) uncharacteristically warned about the Military Industrial Complex and how, apparently a really good man, Carter, was the butt of jokes in the media and only got one term. It seems that the only time we get a glimpse of truth from politicians is as they retire and have their last moment at the podium.

Pro- business can mean multiple things. The pre-socialist alliance between business and government will continue to grow as long as the government grows in power. Of you're a socialist you want those kinds of politicians. It could also mean free market, which is the destruction of large businesses through deregulation that disproportionately harms small business and eliminates competition. If you are more liberal or libertarian leaning you want these kinds of politicians.

The central planners aren't in the government. The rentier oligarchy at the top of wall street (the deep state) does central planning for their private benefit, and they are the employers of politicians. The job of the politician is to deliver voters to the oligarchy by campaigning on whatever gets them elected with oligarchy funding, then do whatever the oligarchy wants, and they are taken care of whether they are reelected or not. "Reagan’s election marked the ascension of deep political forces to a position of sovereignty. Practically speaking, what emerged was an exceptionist tripartite state comprised of (1) a feckless public state, (2) a sprawling security state, and (3) the anti-democratic deep state to which they are subordinated. This consolidation and institutionalization of top-down power was such that US governance could thereafter be described as a deep state system." Good, Aaron. American Exception: Empire and the Deep State (p. 260). If the US had majority rule, i.e. a democratic form of government, we would have a decent minimum wage, Medicare for all, free education, parental and sick leave, legal marijuana, workers on corporate boards, lower credit card interest, not allowing politicians to own stock or immediately graduate to becoming lobbyists, public funding of drug research for public drug patents, and some kind of green new deal, just at first glance at the polls. We have institutionalized opposition at best, not representation at all.

This is about the stupidest fucking thing I've read in months. "Unwarranted dread" my ass. If fossil fuel usage continues at its current rate, we will effectively kill off at least 70% of the earth's population by 2100. Most people just choose not to care, or "believe things will be fine" because they're likely not going to experience the full brunt of the effects in their lifetimes. These are signs of selfishness, egocentricity, and negligence, and anyone with this sort of outlook is quite literally an enemy of humanity itself. Even if we completely stop all use of fossil fuels today and never combust a single ounce of oil again, so much damage has already been done that this century will certainly be marked by the most severe natural disasters and famines in the entirety of human history. But maybe you're privileged and don't have to worry about these things. Maybe you can just move somewhere where the effects aren't as pronounced. That doesn't stop it from destroying billions of other people's lives. But yeah, let's all just believe things won't be bad. That's surely the answer alright.

Noam Chomsky always says we should do something about climate change but he never says what exactly we should do. How are we going to cut down on fossil fuel use without a major catastrophe happening and without getting rid of democracy? Sure, we can build nuclear power plants and that will solve a part of the problem. The only problem it doesn’t solve is the fact of how we store and transport the energy. Both hydrogen and batteries have huge problems associated with them (such as that we’ll need more minerals than we’ve dug in the history of humanity up to this point) that we are no where near fixing. And even the IEA projects that we will continue to use oil and gas at current rates until the 2050s. I personally think the window of opportunity to avert the destruction of organized human life at the scale at which we know it is behind us. And I would love for him to change my mind. But he never says more than that we should take action and he is never really pressed on it either. So it’s a lot of empty talk for me

Noam Chomsky made quite a name for himself in his chosen field of linguistics.... Oh wait, nobody knows what he did in linguistics since he spent most of his time on geopolitics and without any formal training at that. He used to rail against those with no university background in engineering, architecture, aerodynamics or controlled demolition for daring to suggest anything suspicious about the government's version of 9/11. And here he is, the world's renowned expert on everything. He said the Bush administration couldn't have done it since "the Bush administration was not stupid." Where to begin?
