It goes back WAY longer than the seventies. The founding fathers specifically dismissed the idea of 'democracy'. They basically took the Roman idea of a Republic, and added some of the first nations policies of confederacy. But you just read their letters and documents, specifically the charter. THere is only liberty FROM government, there is NO liberty TO partake in government in any meaningful and democratic way. At least there is an option, about half the US states looked at the swiss model and then brought in Citizens Initiatives to make state laws and hold the House responsible. Mike Gravel was the last presidential candidate to talk about that. what are you talking about? A US Senate made of billionaires only who enjoy meeting each other on weekends on golf courses? Democracy must be too vague an idea for you to match with the real political set you live in: a hierarchical structure ruled by money, secured by priviledges, protected by an all mighty intelligence and military core, which operates with an agenda of its beyond any factual control, not even by the government in charge the congress or president. All that about ensuring the country goes on justifying the discrimination which exist within it, for the greater benefit of a minority over the whole

In an ACTUAL democracy the autocracy is the people. For a simple example, lets go to the state of Maine right now. They are having a citzens initiative referendum on the 'right to repair'. If passed, that would force manufacturers selling in the state to provide information and parts. IF it passes, that becomes law. Thats 'autocratic' meaning its a decision to be made law. At a state next door where they DON"T have Citizens Inititiatives that 'autocracy' comes from a house of legislators, who maybe get money from corporations and no way in hell do that want that law. In Switzerland at EVERY level of government, including the federal, they have Citizens initiatives which lets people FORCE a referendum with signatures. Finland brought it to the federal level ten years ago. Thats not exactly 'democracy', but a hell of a lot closer than not, and nobody seems to have any complaints about it. Autocracy is the VERY opposite of 'democracy'. Why in gods name people would want what some rich white guy wanted centuries ago is a mystery to me.

Growing up in the USA Noam Chomsky saved my life by explaining in fine detail how the USA is more Corporation than Country. Example: In 2023 the USA still does have a Public, Single-Payer Healthcare that much poorer countries have had since the 1960's. Thankfully I had the choice to move and back in the 1990's I made that choice and all well before the MAGA Clowns.

It's called regime change, perhaps you've heard of it. Here's your change on that dime.

more democracy if House of Representatives in charge of domestic policy instead of supreme court; and would be more of a republic if Senate runs foreign policy rather than president

what are you talking about? A US Senate made of billionaires only who enjoy meeting each other on weekends on golf courses? Democracy must be too vague an idea for you to match with the real political set you live in: a hierarchical structure ruled by money, secured by priviledges, protected by an all mighty intelligence and military core, which operates with an agenda of its beyond any factual control, not even by the government in charge the congress or president. All that about ensuring the country goes on justifying the discrimination which exist within it, for the greater benefit of a minority over the whole
Trump is what you get when you have nothing else.

American "democracy"?...What "democracy'? 🤣🤣🤣

Chomsky brilliantly deludes his misguided fans into believing that he should be taken seriously outside Linguisitcs! 😀😀😀
Noam Chomsky puts the class war and the culture war into stark and understandable perspective. Much blame is on the right-wing Republicans, but he doesn't spare some of the Democrats either.

Noam Chomsky has literally been attacked by the media, politicians and ostracized for most of his life... He speaks out about all countries and corruption and he specifically gets in trouble when he speaks out about the USA, which many think he is against the USA... but he's only against corruption. He's a proponent for the little guy against corporations and politicians.

I’d expect Chomsky to be happy to see Trump retake the presidency as Trump would be likely to stop funding Ukraine, promote American isolationism (a good thing apparently since global trade and politics means some businessmen and military manufacturers might make some money 😮) and let Putin have his way with Eastern Europe. 🤡

@@juliancochran I linked it in the other reply. Just because you respect someone's decades of work doesn't mean they can't say something horrible. We also have to admit that once someone is elderly, nearly dead, affluent and successful, they begin to prioritize doing anything they can, including sacrificing other's liberties, for their own safety, to preserve that last year of life. Of course now we know all the "science" behind his assertions are rubbish, but even had they been true, he does a 180 on Chomsky as a middle aged man. No one's perfect.
