Glenn Greenwald: Bernie Sanders Would Have Been a Stronger Candidate Against Donald Trump

democracynow.org - On Wednesday, hours after Donald Trump won the presidency, Senator Bernie Sanders issued this statement on Trump’s election: "Donald Trump tapped into the anger of a declining middle class that is sick and tired of establishment economics, establishment politics and the establishment media. People are tired of working longer hours for lower wages, of seeing decent paying jobs go to China and other low-wage countries, of billionaires not paying any federal income taxes and of not being able to afford a college education for their kids-all while the very rich become much richer." In his statement, Senator Sanders also said he would work with Trump "to the degree that Mr. Trump is serious about pursuing policies that improve the lives of working families in this country." But he said that he would oppose Trump "to the degree that he pursues racist, sexist, xenophobic and anti-environment policies." For more, we’re joined by Glenn Greenwald, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and one of the founding editors of The Intercept.

    Andre Weathers Hillary would have never won the nomination without the support of the Democratic base. There are people who claim, perhaps rightly so, that the primary was rigged. However even so Hillary wouldn't have won if she didn't have significant support among Democratic primary voters. Democratic voters picked her, now we have to live with Trump.

    YES ARCTIONERD, BUT IF THE DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE WOULD HAVE SEEN BERNIE MORE AND HEARD BERNIE MORE AND NOT BEEN TOLD TO BE GOOD LITTLE GIRLS AND BOY AND VOTE FOR HILLARY, THEN BERNIE WOULD HAVE WON IN BIG NUMBERS, IF EVERYTHING WAS EQUAL DURING THE PRIMARY.. THAT IS THE POINT OF ALL THIS.. IF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY LEARNS FROM THIS, THEY WILL START WINNING AGAIN, IF THEY DO NOT LEAR, THEY WILL KEEP LOSING..

    Every thing is true, particularly about my candidate Bernie Sanders. All of it, except the last part. I is sad that you who appear to be a good and fair person had fallen for all the lies, innuendos, and selective exaggerations that were level unjustly for her. For lets face it, in the end, most of it was because she was a woman with power running for president. They won't never do that to another candidate who was a man. The social media, Trump's rhetoric lies and hacking from foreign governments played the key in creating so many distortions and bias against her in order to discredit the most prepared person ever to run for the presidency. Now we will regret it. I don't know if you are a Trump supporter (you probably are) but I respect you anyway and take the opportunity to treat you fairly. I don't know how they got you but, respectfully lady, the reality of it is that all those accusations are not true.

  • @bullvalene

    @bullvalene

    This is not lies and innuendo, she is corrupt, it has nothing to do with her gender. They would have never been able to do that to warren because she is not corrupt. From day one Hillary acted as if she was owed the presidency, as if this was her time and it was ordained. Everyone could feel it, and even with the DNC and the entire media establishment helping her, she still failed. She is fake, and she is power hungry, and everyone could see that, she was the most politician like of all the candidates running in a year when there was a widespread backlash against politicians. The country is absolutely ready to elect a woman, just not her. Keep blaming it on sexism, and we learn nothing and will continue to lose.

    She ran on a hybrid ultimately. You can say she was influenced positively by his policies and adopted and modified a good many of them, if you are feeling charitable, or you can say she cherry-picked what looked like it would play better. But hybrids need to be field tested, and that happened only on the fly.

    Glenn is awesome and deserves more respect by the MSM. The Snowden revelation would have been enough for most people to call it a career and rest in their laurels. Not this guy. Keep up the great work Glenn, we are all proud of you!

    The thing is, Bernie was "to much" for the average voter. Most vote on a single issue. To "get" Bernie one needed to know a lot more, then, it seems to be the case. In other words, Bernie requested from the voting public, "we need to take a different path". Young and educated got it, but the "old and entrenched in their ways", did not, could not.
