Good interview David. I’ve learned three things from Prof. Chomsky over the decades-learn your subject, learn your subject, and learn your subject. Actually, there’s a fourth thing-be concise. There’s technically a fifth thing, but I already knew it-there’s no need to raise your voice to make a point.

Chomsky is surprisingly easy to interview. Not only does he respond to Joe Public regularly by email, you can find him doing interviews with everyone from top journalists (like David! hh) to random podcasters all the time. There are interviews out there with various 'unknowns' who have shot him an email and he responded. He also speaks regularly to quite extreme characters on the right. Don't forget, he did an interview with Alex Jones (2007) and even Stefan Molyneux (c. 2014). Chomsky is a true public intellectual who will speak to almost anyone.

Chomsky is a linguistic specialist, anything outside of that specialty and his guess is as good as anyone else's. Just the fact that in the beginning he is talking about how the republicans opposed the civil rights movement is factually wrong. If you spent any effort to research the history of the civil rights movement you will see that there was more support among republicans than from the democrats. So his theories on politics are just him guessing based on facts he has wrong.

@@EggEnjoyer I agree that we can draw some lines, but harassment and threats really don't have much to do with freedom of expression because we can communicate what we think without threatening or harassing other people. The courts may be concerned that imposing too much civility on our discussions may make people not willing to discuss much at all, but I think that most people would agree that banning harassments and threats is reasonable. Freedom of expression is mostly concerned with preventing governments and other authorities from stopping its people from hearing about certain subjects and viewpoints at all. So... I think it depends on what you mean by "fascist ideologies." The lines get really fuzzy once we start talking about punishing speeches that may be motivated by ignorance rather than malice. Especially if we have a hard time showing that the ideology was just that wrong in the first place. If you are talking about racist or other invidious stereotypes that are based on factors that people can't control, or on their deeply held beliefs, that's one thing, but for other ideas...

It was definitely tongue in cheek lol, but Chomsky was 100% serious, and *100% right to say it that way.* There aren't even _shreds_ of humanity left in that despicable party anymore, and if there ARE any shreds that have slipped by inside of a truly negligible number of GOP politicians, those politicians have been silenced by leadership, or they're deathly afraid (rightfully so) of their party's base.

Indeed republicans are all about tribalism. There’s no sense of the greater good, or even satisfaction that we have the ability to help the ones in need. What Chomsky sort of points out is that humanity is about caring/considering for everyone’s needs in the abstract sense is the defining treat that sets us apart from apes and monkeys.
