Chomsky: By Focusing on Russia, Democrats Handed Trump a “Huge Gift” & Possibly the 2020 Election

As Attorney General William Barr releases Robert Mueller’s long-anticipated report into Russian interference in the 2016 election, we speak with world-renowned political dissident, linguist and author Noam Chomsky about what he sees as the political perils of “Russiagate.”

@Tew massa Is she a serious contender? I haven't followed her since learning that. Seems immediately disqualifying. There's no way in hell she'll win the primaries when she formerly worked for an anti-gay organization. She might as well give up now and clear the field for actual, serious candidates who aren't wasting our time. Not saying she's a bad person, but that type of baggage will sink a ship under scrutiny. She should know better than to run with it. Oh well. Nice to know she has progressive foreign policy. We need more of that brought up in the debates. I hope she makes a splash and uses her past to address LGBTQ issues actively and head-on. I won't be voting for her, and I know many who won't ever consider it. She should really know better. It'd be like Rove running as a progressive. Even if he were sincere, that baggage doesn't go away. Ever.

Bernie doesn't have a hope in hell of getting through the primaries if Biden enters the race. Too many obama loyalists still in positions of power in the DNC. They run things. It'll be no different compared to him having to run against Hillary and Biden will be far more popular compared to Hillary in both the primary and general election. If Biden didn't enter, I'd say Bernie has too much support and he has a steady hold on his wedge of the Democratic base and that support is rock solid doesn't really move around a lot. But now that Biden is entering the race, the establishment neo-liberals in the Democratic party have their horse and they're going to shove him across the line as much as they have too because there's not a fucking chance that the corrupt corporatist wing of the Democratic party wants Bernie Sanders as their leader. I like Bernie even though I think most of his ideas are too pie in the sky to actually succeed in our system of government but at least he's true to his beliefs even though I don't share them. That said, you'd have to be very naive to think he won't get screwed in the primaries all over again. To the Democratic establishment, Bernie isn't even a fellow Democrat. He's an independent take-over who refuses to go along with their status quo. It's the same way the Republican party looked at Trump when he joined the race. The problem for the RNC though was Trump was a billionaire who could fund his own damn election regardless if they kept all the fundraising money away from him. They had no leverage over him. It also didn't hurt Trump that his only real competition was Ted Cruz for fuck sake lol. Biden is going to be too strong for Bernie to beat soundly and as long as those two are somewhat close in support, the DNC will be able to put just enough weight on the scales to ensure an Obama Democrat regains control of their party. They won't do it the same way they did it in 2016 but rest assured, they will tip the scales in Biden's favor as they did with Hillary. If they're going to put a white man at the head of the ticket, it's going to be Joe Biden. You'll see when he officially enters the race how much the conversation changes around the Democratic primary. The media will begin fawning over him, down-playing Bernie's chances, it'll be a complete shift from what we have now. The media will pretty much treat him as the presumptive nominee before a single vote is even cast.

This title fits my belief on this subject. I believe Trump or his handlers or both understand that by pushing the narrative of denial, attacking the investigation, acting as if he were guilty, this would push Democrats and the media to focus 24/7 on this issue. So now that we see it's not near as bad as we thought and certainly didn't warrant the constant coverage Trump supporters are behind him more than ever, but more importantly independents and fringe Democrats may disengage from the process completely in 2020. I believe this is a win for Trump and gives him a great chance at a second and more damaging term.

A walking political science encyclopedia and a "photographic" memory. I always learn something from this man. But he, like all of us old guys, sometimes don't give enough credence to the technology being developed by Cambridge Analytica and what must be a host of others by now. It is supremely dangerous in the wrong hands. The "wrong" hands is anyone who knows how to use it, (Amazon, Apple, Google, the NSA, Microsoft) and also has a "hidden" agenda, to take something that doesn't belong to them. Like our rights, wealth and freedom. My information was that CA was using A.I. to conjure personalities, responses and attitudes among selected audiences during the last election fiasco. Does anyone think they won't be at it again this time? It could be anyone from a foreign government, to a private enterprise or Google and Facebook themselves, as they begin to understand the power that they wield. Talk about bringing a knife to drone missile contest. The American election "system" is a conglomeration of ancient devices, left that way so that after-the-fact arguments will be supported. And then you read the one statistic that rules: He who spends the most wins. That's an historical fact. If they are both true, then "he" must be spending the money on sabotaging or otherwise manipulating, the voting system. If that includes the Republican propaganda machine, then it's true also. It takes a Chomsky to get the view from the Crow's nest.

I am so glad he mentioned making abortion a political issue. Originally the right to choose was when to be a parent via making birth control more available. Abortion was there just in case birth control failed. Birth control was to make the use of abortion rare. Like the morning after pill, the birth control pill had its own uphill battle. Women won the battle for more available and dependable birth control. Thus the right to choose was no longer an election issue. So as Mr. Chomsky states, the right to choose was introduced as an abortion right. This reintroduction was not about the right for women to decide when to become a mother. Getting the votes via skills learned ad a reality show host.

We only steer toward the centre when there are sufficient counter points. Chomsky and Goodman are both conspiracy theorists. Chomsky, for example, is on 24/7 in UAE and other tyrannies because the perspective he presents is great at arguing against democracy. Has he ever apologized? About his position on Cambodia, for example? The guy is incorrigible. Wrong for 40 years and still babbling on about the nuclear clock.

In this excerpt Noam Chomsky touched on the key reasons why I supported Bernie Sanders in 2016 and do so again for 2020. Bernie has always been the champion of the working and middle class against oligarchy and the corporate state, and he very effectively reaches an enormous proportion of the voters that Democrats lost, and Republicans picked up, during the neoliberal era. And he understands that while Trump deserves impeachment (and I do agree with Elizabeth Warren on its importance), that issue alone will not carry the Democrats to victory if the voters are once again offered out-of-touch, neoliberal, pay-to-play, establishment candidates and policies for climate change, health care reform, and everything else.

Pretence is right. Once they (the GOP) realised they only needed to protect abortion rights for oligarchs they could ally with the Catholics and baptists. The Supreme Court will soon be deciding on cases that will limit the scope of abortions, making it next to impossible for poor and low income women to get abortions, but the oligarchs can fly anywhere in the world to get their abortions. Not that abortions are great, they are horrible and a desperate measure, but the scale of inequality is what's important to note. The same applies to getting out of debt. With the GOP in charge, or hell, even Obama, the banks get bailed out after a crisis, but poor and middle income households do not.

People complained about Wall Street and proceeded to set up movements/organisations to rightfully combat it that have become just as corrupt, abusive and destructive as Wall Street. The biggest flaw in how we address issues of abuse of power in society is that the desire to abuse power is universal and always justified by the person doing it. Every generation thinks that it is the first enlightened generation and every one is wrong. Perhaps if a movement arises that wants to limit abuse of power and sees itself also as an important target to limit we might have a period of relative sustained prosperity...... until the next idealistic generation doesn't see the value in self-limitation and tears it all down again.
