No way! Fly Fishing Pyramid Lake in June - catching giant lahontan trout in flip flops and T-shirts?

We are the oldest fly fishing guide service on Pyramid Lake - we know all about ladder fishing. We own a ladder rental company, we have fish records, we are always very busy every March and April. However, Pyramid Lake has changed, Weather has been unpredictable in the last couple of years and the dominance of the giant Pilot Peak strain of the lahontan cutthroat trout turned this place into a trophy fishery. Days of quantity fishing might be gone while coming in February, March and April can still give you a shot at the biggest trout of your life.
On our end, we're getting more and more excited about float tube trips. In May we start off with our Eastern Nevada outings and blowing up our fantastic @Outcastboats and then we fish the entire month of June on Pyramid. Fish are huge. They fight very, very hard. Weather is amazing. Beach experience is unbelievable. Now we also have rental trailers that you can use to camp right at the beach. We gather around the traeger, fish all the time and simply enjoy this amazing place and outstanding fly fishing experience.
Join our guided trips and outings in June - and you tell us when is the best time to go fishing on Pyramid Lake!

I am Bryce Nielson. I was the fisheries biologist that worked for years recovering what I believed were the extinct form of lahontan cutthroat trout that existed in a remote stream on the Utah side of the Pilot Mountains. I always believed that if I could get them beck into Pyramid Lake they would explode . There is a long story that I won't go into to it but a characteristic of these fish is the ability to survive in warm water and were very pisciverous (fish eaters). I am glad that they are back in their original habitat .

It's the original strain that was in the lake before the lake was commercially fished out

Hi Rob! I've read your article on the shifts with Pyramid and the Pilot Peak strain. (I'm also a part of your Facebook group.) Loved the video!Do you think that March and February will be as it was this year? I heard it was a lot slower than normal this year. (I've only been fishing Pyramid for a year now; I've done 5 trips with 3-4 days each.)

Hey buddy, great question. I just think that there are not nearly as many Summit Strain fish in the lake as in the old days and that drives the February-April shore fishing.

@@robanderson7444 Yeah, that makes sense! Also, it was my first time fishing the lake the week of Thanksgiving. I got my PB at 13.3 on the strip, along with a few 11s and a 10. . Do you think the Pilot strain fatten up for the winter, similar to other trout? Do the Summits do the same too? Was the last Oct-Nov as good as it's ever been, average, or worse than average on previous years?

How deep are the fish in June and what types of lines and flys are used, I’m very interested!
