No Spark Issue on a Kohler Courage Engine

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My Estate Car is not working - Sell all your Stocks and Bonds!!!
Well it's not really the 'end of the world' but I have to say, it sure is an annoyance. I bought this old ride on mower a while ago and re-worked it to become a daily driver for me to get around the property here at the lake. I use it all the time and it sure is nice not having to walk down the hill to the lake, or back up the hill too. Especially with my knees being half wore out and half not working!! LOL
The Estate Car was working great and then one day it wouldn't start. I tried everything but I couldn't get it to start and I had to walk back up the hill to the camp!! I was not happy!!! The next day it started like nothing ever happened. But then it wouldn't start again the other day and so I figured I better get it back in the shop and have a look see.
So in this video I try and diagnose why it won't start. The first thing I found was 'no spark' Hey, I figured this is going to be easy. But there I go thinking again.
At the end of the day I couldn't find anything wrong. Intermittent faults are bears to try and track down. I guess I'll have to wait until another day to chase this one. A day when the fault comes back, and it will !!
If anyone has any ideas what might be causing my Estate Car not to start please let me know in the comments. I'll be eternally grateful!!
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video. Please 'thumbs up' me and leave me some comments. And if you haven't done so already, please consider 'subscribing' to my channel. It sure helps my videos get noticed and my channel grow.
I hope you all have a great week.

That's frustrating. It's been suggested to replace the wire to the ignition switch. That is a good idea. The old Sears had one wire running to each safety. the safety just grounded the wire if there was a fault. Can you have a test light in the boot and ping the connections if it fails.

How's she goin'? That's a good trouble shooting technique for sure. Right now the engine starts and runs great!! But the next time it fails, and it will, I'll try some more trouble shooting like you mentioned. I'm leaning towards a bad ground. Like you say, most of the grounds are done to the body and frame and those connections are prone to rust and high resistance over time. Take 'er easy!!!

@@OldSneelock Hey there Dave!! The only safety left is the brake on switch and it seems to be OK. If the kill wire gets grounded the engine stops. That's the way this one is set up. I expect this is a normal set up. I will be checking into the ground on the ignition switch next. Take care!!

When I got into the wiring it was craziness. Not just a simple off, run, and start with a feed. Had to be at least 7 or 8 wires for the stupid thing. Anyways, you might try eliminating the ignition switch from the equation by making up some jumpers?? @@GrampiesWorkshop It happens. I use a program called TubeBuddy to run a template for my videos. I set it up to always have set parameters. There is a free version that I am currently using while I get the channel straightened out. When I feel comfortable I will go back to the subscription version. It costs about $15..00 a month and helps create thumbnails, pick tags, and do bulk changes. Like erasing Tesla from all the videos on my channel. 😡😤😠

How's she goin'? Well VERnon The Kohler Courage works great if I can get it started!! LOL The kill wire seems to be in good condition. Hehehe. Aren’t they fun to find. Intermittent flauts. 🤭🤭 I guessing the ignition switch in the start position is not taking the ground away to allow the spark to happen. Just a guess Mike. Those kind of troubles are why people have no hair or drink a lot. 🤣🤣😂😂👍🏻🍻🥃🇨🇦

How's she goin"? You know Noel when I was thinking about this problem that's what I kind of came up with too, that the ignition switch is faulty. But then Steve Rob suggested maybe it's the ground at the ignition switch. It's grounded at the switch to the body and we know what kind of connections they make after some time eh!! Thanks for the tips though Noel. I'll be checking those out because this fault is going to come back for sure eh!! Take 'er easy!!!

When you first cranked it over and there was no spark, you had breakfast cereal "Nut 'N Honey" I think there could be a problem with the neutral safety switch, if there is one. They are known to get sticky and wear causing intermittent starts. Or the ignition switch could be the issue. Is there a requirement to have the transmission selector in neutral or park for the tractor to turn the starter? If so, there's a neutral safety switch there somewhere.

  • @GrampiesWorkshop

    @GrampiesWorkshop

How's she goin'? Well Craig, I was eating healthy this day because I had Nut 'N Honey on this old bird!! I was a bad boy and jumpered out all the safeties on this except for the 'brake on' switch, so the neutral sw is not the problem. I'm thinking an intermittent ignition switch, but then Steve Rob suggested maybe a bad ground at the ignition switch. I never thought of that and since the ground is made through the body, you know what can happen with those connections after a time eh!! The next time this fails, and it will, I'll be checking out the switch and grounds for sure. Stay cool and I hope the fires out there aren't anywheres close to you folks!! Take 'er easy!!

Maybe with how cheap gas is, you could just leave the kill wire unattached and having running at standby all the time. Maybe...well maybe not. I know a few weeks ago when it happened to me, the first I checked was the seat switch and it was unplugged, lol. Seems you already took care of that, other than that I am no help.
