No more digging holes, we built an outhouse | Building Everstoke

Building an outhouse is a pretty huge piece of the puzzle for making the land a bit more habitable. Hopefully we can dig a hole deep enough to last us a good long time.

Hey Brian, a trick we used in the Marines when we were in Afghanistan for urination facilities , 4" PVC pip at a 45 degree angle set in the groung about 3' , kept the smell away usually and would filter into the ground. Just a friendly tip sir.

Hi Brian, use Lime after a number 2. I have built several out houses in different regions, and we have a bucket (with lid) of lime and a scooper. Only takes a single scoop over the top of the feces and off you go. It helps it breakdown quickly, so a hole as deep as the one you dug will last a couple years at least.

Hi Brian, Kris M. from Ct, We grew up with an old functioning outhouse ! In side we had a bag of Lime, the top open with a plastic cup inside . After you deposit your contribution into mother earth sprinkle a little lime on top. This should help keep the unpleasant aroma to a minimum. Looking forward to watching you build your little slice of the pie ! Good luck

Nasty I no but the chicken's an a dog helped quite a bit. So use in digging a hole. Quite helpful I can tell ya.

As a former professional long drop cleaner and builder I recommend: a high chimney to create negative draft out of the pit and a bucket of lime flour to sprinkle between dumps. This will neutralise ph and make it compost more. 💩 ✅

FYI desert rats: No more digging holes in the desert! Unfortunately, southwest visitation numbers are so high, that those enjoying this beautiful area are now going to have to Pack It Out! Too many people in a fragile desert environment means it can't handle all the poop! So for all of us who love Moab and similar locations, please plan accordingly. You may even see WAG bags at trailheads and campgrounds without toilets. So if you're living the van life and want to see these areas, be sure to come prepared. That way, you can "go" prepared!!! The book "How to Poop in the Woods" may need some updating. The use of "growlers" and other portable "facilities" have been standard river running fare for decades. Well it's now time for the rest of the traveling population to get with the routine.
