I'm no expert, perhaps a visual anchor like touching your nose if their eyes are open, or an auditory like click your tongue or fingers or some soundboard with unique sounds...
Do you have to do this multiple times for it to stick or is once sufficient?

Once. If it’s going to work it typically just works.
I always had impression NLP was like some kind of absolute rocket fuel cure for issues. Paid a stack of money *9 hours* on one issue and it was not resolved !
