The lyrics to this song are a little crunchier than Alex asserts, in my opinion. Maybe I'm misreading this, but it seems like a man is stalking his ex-girlfriend through the NYC nightclubs. To defend this stalker behavior, he basically says, "La-Dee-Da, blame it on Broadway -- it's a crazy scene."

All Bee Gees are S tier. Period. No discussion needed.

When this came out I was a Styx, REO, Aerosmith, Rush guy. We HATED all this disco type music. All these years later I really appreciate the talent here. The harmonies are amazing and the playing is so solid. Awesome drum groove.

I hated disco too, but I realize it often wasn’t because of the music, but because it took over the airwaves. My preferred rock radio station even went all disco. Looking back, there was some quality material that I would’ve liked prior to the disco craze. Of course, part of it was that the disco craze caught me as a teen boy who was already slowly shifting from Top 40 to rock. The ubiquitousness of disco pushed me over the edge. I can enjoy the best disco songs now. However, there were a lot of very bad popular disco songs. And I still hate those.

One thing being an old fart (65) is I always find new stuff in the old songs. Especially with artists I never picked up on (Humble Pie) or bands I didn't care for initially ( Bee Gees).

@@moniphil I get that. Disco felt all-consuming during that period, where even so-called "traditional" rock artists were dipping their toes into the genre, i.e., Kiss, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart. Plus, you had novelty acts releasing disco music, i.e., "Disco Duck". It was all a bit too much, even for some people who weren't exclusively "rock" music fans.

One of the best from the Bee Gees.

Personally, it's an S tier for me, just for the harmonies alone. But I'm a life long Bee Gees fan. Next? "Massachusetts", "Lonely Days," and "I Started A Joke" for starters.

I've always been a massive fan of Spicks and Specks. Super simple but super catchy. Not a massive fan of Massachusetts though. They have so many great songs. Too Much Heaven and Tragedy are two of their most underrated songs in my opinion.

The older I get, the more I appreciate the Bee Gees and their breadth of material. New York Mining Disaster, Massachussetts, Words, I Started a Joke. Soooo many songs you can eventually get to here. Ultimately it should end with a viewing of their One Night with the Bee Gees show to get a real sense of their scope. I totally get that Alex rated "low", but that's how the Bee Gees go. Give it 20 years and he'll be going, "Man was I wrong back then."

Sorry but Alex completely missed this one. This is clearly an A+ if not an S-tier song. The strong harmonies, the hard hitting instrumentals, and throw in the drumming, this is a banger in any generation. Andy, you are spot on in your review.

Yes, and here's the thing... these guys, as fun as they are, can never really do this: and that is put themselves BACK IN TIME to feel the raw excitement and the fresh sound of a song like this when it was released in 1975. They have both heard throughout their lives songs, sounds and productions so advanced on the musical timeline that their ears are "spoiled" if you will, and so even if this is a first-time listen for them, it's not a true first-time listen in the realm of the precise moment in which the song was launched, in its proper historical context. Not blaming them, it's just the way it is. I appreciate them appreciating these older songs, but it's not like being 20 years old in 1975, rushing home from the record store, ripping off the plastic wrap and having the greedy expectancy of what this new, curious album might sound like. Then, upon hearing this first cut on Main Course for the first time, the sheer ecstasy to the ears! It was a truly remarkable experience. I remember where I was, the cheesy portable record player I spun it on, and precisely how I felt. Nobody 45-plus years later, who has listened to countless songs their whole lives, can FULLY appreciate "Nights on Broadway" to the same extent as those of us who were there.

You mentioned David Bowie. He was a huge fan of the BeeGees. His classic "Space Oddity" was a tribute to the BeeGees and was inspired by the style they used for "New York Mining Disaster 1941". There will never be another group as good or ecclectic as the BeeGees. Alot of people associate them with the Disco era. However, they had been around since 1958. They were just talented enough to change with the times and write what was good in those eras. They have not only some of the best songs that they sang, they were prolific writers for so many artists. They all had such unique voices and they way they blended was just a gift. It is sad that out of the four brothers only Barry (the oldest) is left to carry on. I do hope you decide to slide down the rabit hole. I guess one of the most unique voices of the three was Robin. His song "I started A Joke" is one of the most beautiful songs. As always great review guys. Stay safe and peeeeace oooutttt

In the HBO special, they mention losing access to their drummer for a while as they were assembling the SNF soundtrack, and they built a number of tracks by looping some of the drummer's riffs (Jive Talking particularly comes to mind) Was that technique used here also, or is this one a fully live groove?

"How do you mend a broken heart", "Lonely days", and "I started a joke" are my go to songs from this talented group of brothers. 😎

Top 3 BeeGees song for me. I should note that I'm only a casual fan, so I probably only know about 20-25 of their songs, maybe less. But of their songs I know, 'Nights on Broadway' is as good as they get, IMO.

In the annals of music, _this_ would not be in the category of all-time greatest songs. I think people lose sight of that when they hear a song or a band that they really like. Objectively speaking, it's closer to Alex than Andy. And this one has always been one of my favorites of theirs

The BGs took a lot of grief in the backlash to Disco. Well, some disco was garbage. But these guys are exceptionally good at what they do and were a hit machine for a very long time.

At the time, it was ok and I think much of it put a nice seal on the remarkable variety of good music that was the '70's experience'. And in retrospect, it's Bach and Mozart compared to what they're listening to today.

@Sam Pizna I would like to clarify. While I was in high school in the 1970s, I liked different styles of music: Rock, Fushion, Jazz and R&B. Some Disco music was good, but because it sold so well, some people started recording some Disco music that wasn't good. I hardly ever listen to modern music because I don't tend to like what I hear. The same few notes played repeatedly, a lack of interesting chord progressions, rap segments, autotune, and yuck.

The backlash came from Progressive & Hard Rock fans mostly, many of whom remembered The BeeGees from their Rock & Ballad Genre Era during the late 1960's. So apparently, once you achieve recognition in one musical genre, you're not allowed to produce music in other genres ? It's amusing how many Rock Fans are basically snobbish elitists.

Clearly they're successful but they weren't always taken seriously especially in the Disco Era but I feel their disco Era is just as quality as any of their other eras

IMO their best. All three shine through. Maurice was a talented musician, sang beautiful falsetto on this one.

Yes - I think that to appreciate this song, you have to recognise its historical context. Along with Jive Talking, this was a seminal part of their transition to the disco phase, where they achieved their greatest successes.

This is my favorite BeeGee tune all these years later.

Alex must have been listening to a totally different song than the rest of us. This song is at least A+, bordering on STier.

Check out earlier works: "Massachusetts", "Lonely Days," "I've Gotta Get a Message to You", "New York Coal Mining Disaster", "Holiday" and "How do You Mend a Broken Heart." I always loved the earlier Bee Gees.

I tried to like the Andy & Alex reaction channel... As time went on I realized I much preferred Andy's attitude and open minded takes regarding the songs they were reacting to compared to Alex ...But this is not a channel for me ...Someone my age who has a songwriting and recording background has a hard time relating to these guys ...I was looking for more of a younger generations appreciation of some of my favorite classic rock/pop songs ...Not a false ultra critical aficionado response to musical masterpieces ...Although the hilarious facial expressions these 2 display will always been a source of amusement ...Still I wish these 2 young men all the luck in the world ...

"Run to me" was always, in my opinion, a very underrated Bee Gees song. Barbara Gibb, their mother, had a favorite - another song which is underrated. It's called "Fanny be tender (with my love.)" Among their later songs, I'd recommend "Alone" and "You win again." The trouble with the Bee Gees is that they had so many good songs that it's hard to limit recommendations to just a few .

They so need to hear Fanny. Guys, look at the likes on this comment. The change ups of who is singing when is insane. And it builds throughout the entire song, very subtle but surely. There were so many tracks laid down of their harmonies here, it's just ridiculous how good the song is. I heard pretty much all their hits before I hear Fanny, and then was blown away. Quincy Jones said it was one of the best R&B songs ever, and he tried and tried to find someone who could even adequately cover it and didn't succeed. Maurice said they all liked the song but didn't do it live because it was just 'such a bitch to sing'.

You guys should really check out their earlier work. "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" and "I Started a Joke" are among the most original lyrics I've ever heard.

This song was essentially perfection, from a songwriting/music performance perspective. Drums were crisp and sounded like you were in the studio sitting next to the kit. Powerful delivery of lyrics, particularly with the suspended "Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeereeeee, we are." The vocal harmonies were perfect. It was gritty, despite it's outward light airy initial feel. Watching them perform this live shows the seriousness of Barry's delivery. It was also ground breaking in it's time. It was disco'esque, but it was a rock song none-the-less

Andy - I couldn't agree with you more about the A+ rating. Personally, I like this more than Staying Alive.

Staying alive is there worst song. I love all there other songs.

I was also one of those 70s, "Disco Sucks" detractors. But it was posturing cuz I thought that was the cool thing to say. Today, as a singer, when I hear those harmonies groove, I actually tear up. The way those familial pipes lock in. It's something we all aspire to and that the brothers effortlessly nailed throughout their epic career. Too Much Heaven, which I thought was cheesy beyond cheese back in the day, is a masterclass in studio vocal tracking.

You guys need to go listen to pre-disco Bee Gees-"Lonely Days, Lonely Nights," "New York Mining Disaster 1941," "Holiday," "I've Gotta Get a Message To You," and many other great hits. Their first song was released in 1963, just to give you an idea how long they were around.

This IS one of their best from this time period. Their early work is more inspired but Nights on Broadway is an A+ if not an 'S'...

Favorite Bee Gees song is their early hit “To Love Somebody,” classic blue eyed soul.

This is such a great song. Thanks for heeding our recommendations and reacting to this! The Bee Gees are not for everybody, especially after getting burdened with the disco label, but you gotta admit this song is a pop gem.

To me, The Best Bee Gee’s Song in their Catalog!! This particular song is a must watch live…whole different experience just to see who is singing what!

The bridge/break in this song is an example of The Bee Gees best harmonies. Sublime. Voices of angels.

One of my fav Bee Gees songs! Who cares about lyrics, it's all about the groove and the harmonies. "You Should Be Dancing", "Night Fever", "Fanny", and "How Deep Is Your Love" are all good choices.👍

I was in the ‘Disco Sucks’ camp at the time, but Saturday Night Fever turned me around to some extent. Now I love it with a nostalgic slant.

I felt the same way at the time. But over the last 40 years or so I come to appreciate it more as an uplifting experience when the city was going thru hard times. Plus I now live in the neighborhood where the movie Saturday Night Fever takes place. Time may have moved on but sadly not the neighborhood.

I would never just listen to a disco song on its own, but a night out on the town was a different story! That’s when it came to life.

@@kmorri9 disco didn't have to claim it had no substance. all you had to do was look at the polyester suits,platform shoes,and coked up people dancing mindlessly to see that. alex gave it a B+, i wouldn't call that loving it. it was more of a charitable rating.

Been a Bee Gees fan for life. Love all their music, from the 60’s, from Disco, and after Disco. This is S-Tier IMHO.

You can't get the full appreciation for the Bee Gees from one sample. Their talent is just too vast and versatile. You need several songs from different decades to understand their greatness.

I had forgotten how lusciously produced this is. It doesn't just go to a standard bridge, and then back to verse, but goes into a pretty progressive changeup for the back half, before the soaring reprise vocal chorus come back in and just fly away with it. I like the way each of the brothers gets a big vocal highlight or three in this masterpiece. The instrumentals are so unique and groovy, nothing else sounds quite like it. That bass riff is utterly unforgettable, so iconic. Next is "Too Much Heaven," although I am a sucker for "How Deep Is Your Love." You guys have to put Saturday Night Fever on your movie list, for sure.

Everyone who hasn’t, should watch their live performance in Los Vegas in 1997. It will give any of the youngsters a new impression of exactly how professional they were and sang their biggest hits ever on the charts and their albums! Just a few years before Maurice passed away.

Andy is spot on with this one, sorry Alex. When I first heard this on the radio as a kid in 1975, laying in bed in the dark of night, the groove just infected my bones. It has been my favorite Bee Gees song ever since. I'm not saying it's their best, but it is my favorite. That groove dug out between the piano, bass, and drums just draws you in!

I love when they slow it down and those harmonies come through.

The Bee-Gees are a treasure. The amount of great songs they've written just boggles the mind.

This actually predates Saturday Night Fever, but the lyrics are so in tune with the SNF story. Here we are in a room full of strangers/Standing in the dark, how long will they stand between us (Tony's interest in Stephanie at the disco). Well I had to follow you/ though you did not want me to/ but that won't stop my loving you/ I can't stay away (his relentless pursuit of her affection). This song was not from SNF, but it wouldn't be out of place if it had been.

This was the first song they used their high falsetto voices in...and that's Maurice playing bass.

This is an A song for sure. This was written during the Bee Gees Miami period where they were influenced by the city's upcoming Disco and club scene. This album debuted The Bee Gees new sound and was also the premier of Barry Gibbs falsetto which he didn't know he had until then. I often find that listening to a song at night, in the dark, versus in broad daylight can make a profound difference in how you receive it. Listening to this song while I was driving to school was a totally different experience than when we were cruising the blvd on Friday night.

When I was in High School in the late 70s, the BEEGEES were public enemy number one because of their association with Disco, which was, to us rockers, an empty pointless music. It took decades for me to appreciate the musicianship, production ,and writing talent involved in their music. I still think most of disco was garbage, but I don’t lump the BEEGEES in with that opinion.

@@uptownjay I graduated from high school in 79. It was a couple of years later that I was inspired by LBGT friends to really become an ally. After that I spent a fair amount of time going to The Odyssey in LA. That’s when I started expanding my musical tastes. By then the sound track had expanded to New Wave.

This is my favorite BeeGees song.

Guys, this was the song that officially brought the high-falsettos of Barry Gibb to the fore of their recordings. The producer thought there was just a little something missing in the chorus, and asked if one of them could go to the mic and hit some high notes. Barry raised his hand, went to the mic, and history was made. The truth is: All 3 of them have remarkable high notes, but Barry's the one who got the title, so, it goes to him as being the usual leader of its stylings. The secret weapon to the Bee Gees harmonies is...wait for it...Maurice Gibb: He has the lowest singing voice (though, he can hit the same notes that Barry can), and it's his vocal contributions on their 3-part harmony that gives them that incredible, unique sound. Truly, The Brothers Gibb. Great reaction, Guys.

All three could do everything with their voices, but yes, Mo had the ability to know exactly when, where, how to come in and out of what his brothers were doing. He considered himself a musician who sang a little. I've read Robin had the biggest vocal range, but not by a lot. Barry had a breathy quality when he wasn't using falsetto or his deeper chest voice, and Robin had that beautiful vibrato and very emotional voice that could just grab you, but Mo was the glue.

To Love Somebody is a must hear song by the BG. It was written by them for Otis Redding. He never got a chance to record it, and they decided to release the version of it. It has also been covered but many artists.

A&A, you'll love their "Stayin' Alive", "Night Fever" and "To Love Somebody"!!!

-Fun Fact- Sad Fact: "To Love Somebody" was written by them for Otis Redding. But, alas, he died that year, before he could record it.

I used to play this on vinyl when I was a little kid wondering why it didn’t receive more time on the radio. I know they had other songs more popular but this was also worthy. Not sure I’d rank it in their top 5 songs but definitely in the top 10.

They are soooo good. I wasn't sure when they were super popular but I have developed a huge appreciation for them over the years.

Alex, the Bee-Gees were so ahead of their time that, even today, their sound - the vocal harmonies and the musicianship - is still appealing.

You could see on Andy's face that he got it: the funk, the groove, the vocals, the songwriting, everything! The Bee Gees were amazing artists, and they wrote hits for other legendary artists like Barbara Streisand, Franki Valli, and Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers (duet). They have massive respect from other musicians, as attested by last year's tribute album from the Foo Fighters

You must react to some early BeeGees, back when Robin sang lead, before Barry began singing falsetto. "How Do You Mend a Broken Heart?" was their crowning achievement.

I think a good bridge song from this era into their more disco/Saturday Night Fever side is “Tragedy.” Great sort of in betweenish song.

One of the best of their later years. Puts Jive Talking to shame, IMO. This has one of the most beautiful breaks I’ve heard. Alex, give it another shot. Totally agree about this one, but I'd put Night Fever in with Jive Talking on the tier list. You Should Be Dancing is up there with Staying Alive, which is also actually the highlight of the movie IMO.

Of course! Forgot about that one! I did like Night Fever, however. But to me, Nights on Broadway and Stayin’ Alive are the only ones comparable to their old days. And in my first comment I meant “bridge” not “break”. Love that bridge!!

"New York Mining Disaster 1941" or "I Started A Joke" are early Bee Gees" and are a totally different vibe with thoughtful, somber lyrics. Bee Gees adapted to each generation and used their familial harmonies perfectly. I always thought Nights on Broadway was a fun song and a summer type song. No doubt, each of those guys could sing and harmonize with each other. Always loved them.

These guys have been totally under appreciated in the US. They wrote all their lyrics and music from the 60’s thru 2000’s. The music after the disco era is dynamite! And their harmonies are beyond anyone’s. Try “As The Bell Tolls”. Andy “gets” them.

The 70's were pretty much musical heaven. Whatever you like, it was on the radio. All of it.

That song has always been my favorite Bee Gees tune. In general, I always preferred their post-Beatles-esque, pre-Disco era. The sound was funky but still rooted in Rock/Power Pop.

Look, I'm not a disco guy (it's fun, but I don't go out of my way for it), and I get that the middle is a bit disjointed, but B+ is just too low. I'm with Andy here. Next up for the Bee Gees: To Love Somebody, or Massachusetts.

This isn't a disco song! It's straight-up R&B/funk. There's too much going on musically in this song for it to be disco, plus it lacks disco's trademark mechanical two-four stomp. And there's never been a disco song that had a ballad-style, beat-free bridge like the one in "Nights on Broadway".

Such a driver. This song, partly due to the lyrics, gives me chills. Fast dance to romantic slow and back to fast: only a few songs have done that.

I love the Bee Gees. They get a bad rap for the Disco, but there is so much more to them. They are top tier.

This song has it all - I give it an A plus for sure, or even higher.

Yeah, you can definitely go back to the 60's Bee Gees with "To Love Somebody" or "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", which was from the early 70s, just before the last two that you listen to.

This song is a S because of the year it came out. Meaning it connected the fans that loved them in the late sixties and early seventies to the late seventies sound. This was the song that connected the early Bee Gees to the disco Bee Gees. Awesome time in music.

The song has one of the best middle eights ever. This is a great song definitely an A+

They all kept Harmonizing Higher and Higher, They discovered they all had it but Barry could do it longer. Please react to the Bee Gees song Fanny Be Tender With My Love. It is one of the first songs they did after discovering the Falsetto.
