I knew Alex wouldn’t like it based on how much Andy hyped it up and based on Alex’s well-established musical prejudices, but for those of us who grew up with that song it’s just about the most perfect and beautiful love song ever written and those beautifully sparkly keyboard tones are a huge part of that. What sounds cheesy to Alex’s ears is just sweet plush LiteFM soft rock gold for those of us who want to float away on a romantic cloud lol

"just sweet plush LiteFM soft rock" Hahaha so true. A&A sometimes note whether somebody is doing what they do exceptionally well. The BeeGees did this better than anybody else. I think their up-tempo stuff has more general appeal, but this is indeed peak "sweet plush LiteFM soft rock." Alex doesn't like most soft rock or 80s keyboard pop. He sometimes surprises. And to be fair, a lot of the world has gone towards harder rock. I think the grunge shift changed the popular acceptance of hard rock. Mainstreamed it in a way it was not before. But I think Millennials were weaned on hard rock and don't do soft so much.

I would say "underappreciated" because there are tons of people who think the Bee Gees were a disco act, and they were definitely not. They state that in the documentary. They may not care to realize the amazing library of hits they had before Saturday Night Fever. So I would agree with that analogy. I, for one, loved them as a child of the 70's, and they are still in my top 5 ever. They're absolutely amazing. When I was 13 in 1979, my sister's took me to see them, and at the time, I was obsessed with them, literally.

I read an interview once with a Alice Cooper roadie who recounted the moment the crew put this 8 track on the tour bus prepared to openly MOCK IT (this was the height of disco) but said with every track the bus got quieter and quieter and by the time it was finished everybody just looked at each other in stunned silence remarking " The music was so good you couldn't hate it! I was a sophomore in college when that movie came out, and all that music. It literally changed my life. How? well I was a total nerd with no girlfriends. After watching that movie several times I bought some nice clothes, started taking more care of my appearance, learned how to dance. I went to the discos and all of that caused me to gain confidence. And with more confidence I went from having no dating life to having plenty of girlfriends. Just my little story.

Loved your story, I'll share mine. Growing up had a divorced neighbor man with two daughters that were there for visitation every other weekend. The older one and I always seemed to hit it off but we were young, but she was my first crush. Dad moved away and we never saw each other anymore. 10 years later, 1977, her and I happened to run into each only to learn we both had had crushes on each other! We started dating and this was our song. We were together several years but unfortunately eventually grew apart and broke up. But hearing this song immediately brings me back to a very peaceful time in my life when I felt like I was on top of the world. I agree with Andy, it's an S for sure.

Alex knows so little of the 1980s which I think contributes to his "dislike" of the 80s. To think of this song as 1980s is hilarious to those of us who actually lived in the 1970s and 1980s. This song, being on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, is firmly cemented in the 1970s as much as any new wave hit could ever be in the 1980s.

I never considered them a disco band. They were making R&B songs but got labeled Disco because of this soundtrack. I mean, yeah Night Fever is pretty Disco but that was sort of their giving in to demands of the movie as opposed to what they had worked on outside of it. I mean the Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and KISS all made "disco" songs, and Night Fever is theirs, but Stayin Alive is R&B more than Disco.

The Bee Gees really had 2 careers, starting off as a Beatles-influenced group, and later a group that alternated disco songs with soul-influenced ballads. You've heard at least 4 songs from the later incarnation, so now, I would check out the earlier group. My 1st choice would be "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", but "To Love Somebody", "Lonely Days", and "New York Mining Disaster 1941" are good too.

To Love Somebody. Wow. How those lyrics hit. Some rare songs just hit the nail on the head. Universal understanding. That feeling is understood immediately on a deep level. The melody is a double whammy. Just inspired. Strangely I relate to my dad. He loved the BeeGees. On 8 track. He was not a rock or pop guy. I did not hear any of that growing up. But i did hear the BeeGees. We were estranged. He let me down badly, repeatedly. A diagnosed narcissist. I could never reach him. Or get basic stuff from the relationship no matter how hard i tried. He left me in need with a smile as a minor, a lot. Anyways, grief was complicated when he died. Sad for what i never was able to get. I really was stuck. Angry too. Then i heard To Love Somebody, and in particular the lines “ In my brain I see your face again I know my frame of mind You ain't got to be so blind And I'm blind, so, so, so blind I'm a man Can't you see what I am? I live and I breathe for you But what good does it do If I ain't got you, ain't got? You don't know what it's like, baby You don't know what it's like To love somebody To love somebody The way I love you”, and I connected. It resonates. The tears came. I could finally articulate my feelings through this song. The power of music is amazing. Great band.

A classic from 1977. A classic in 2023. This song, and the LEGENDARY soundtrack it comes from, has not lost ANY of its luster. It's meant to reflect the protagonist of the film, Tony, in relationship to the girl he wants and has romanced throughout the film, Stephanie (he lives in Brooklyn, she resides in Manhattan). I used to hear this monumental double album/LP on my parents' 8-Track...a childhood memory that I recall every time I listen to the Saturday Night Fever OST, on Japanese Hi-Def mini-LP papersleeve SHM-CD format, in The 21st Century. Alex is at a huge disadvantage not living through the time these songs came out. He’s spoiled by having all these decades of artists to play back to back at an instant. There was nothing else like The Bee Gees when this came out, still isn’t really. Andy is very lucky to love them. One of the greatest groups and songwriters of all time.

So lucky to have these sountracks as the background of my life, to date, study, hang out and go to the beach with. So happy we weren't inundated by vulgarity and higher frequency trash that is supposed to be music. In our day, Alex would've been the stoner, rocker, heavy metal type who probably secretly loved disco for the girls.

It's funny, I absolutely love the electric piano and its tone/fx. It was a standard then and now classic. Billy Joel maximized it on "Just The Way You Are", and 10cc did the same for "I'm Not In Love". I enjoy the little clusters played in the verse parts and then the broken chords added at just the right spots. Vocals are immaculate and the song goes round and round like it could never end, and I hope it doesn't.

The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988. The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1966. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin' (and was also actually the first album on which their logo was introduced). From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). You should react to the 1979 live version of Stayin' Alive, too kzread.info/dash/bejne/aaKdurWhZ9m9gqw.html Other great songs to analyze: great album tracks from the 1979 Spirits Having Flown album, the title song: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iXyTzJtplqavm5c.html, the outrageously beautiful song Reaching Out kzread.info/dash/bejne/qJp8t7VufcmWYLQ.html. Bee Gees body of work is so large and full of immortal records. Great songwriters and arrangers. Their best ballad was "Words" and I'm partial to their earlier records, "Spicks and Specks", "I Can't See Nobody," "Massachusetts" and "Lonely Days," to name a few. Major props to them for hiring so many musicians on their first few albums, before they discovered the ARP synthesizer in the 1970s.

One of the best-written pop songs of all time. You can hear their early heavy Beatles influence here because they do something the Beatles were known for: every time you repeat a section, change it up in some way. Sing different words with the same melody, or tweak the backing instruments, or whatever. They were amazing songwriters both for themselves and for several other artists.

This was FAR from the beginning. They had MAJOR hits in the 60's when I was a teen and got mobbed like the Beatles. When they played the Savoy in London in 1968 Paul McCartney was shoved out of the way for fans to get at the Gibbs. He said "We had our time, now it's their turn". They started as kids in the early 60's and continued until the early 2000's when Maurice died but the ridiculous backlash on disco buried them and they could not get airplay for the terrific stuff they wrote in the 80's, 90's and 2000's.
