Well, it started as nothing more than a trade union for coal and steel in the beginning. Slowly, over time, it then also became a political union as the nations who're part of it began thinking that maybe they could do more as a collective than on their own. Fast forward to today where the EU has a stake in most anything, and is still trying to broaden its influence

The European Union destroyed the production of sugar beets in Latvia and rural people were left without prosperity, we all import sugar from Denmark and leave our homeland.
