Verhofstadt: "Maybe the only thing that can save us is Nigel Farage now"

Liberal group leader Guy Verhofstadt warned on Tuesday (16 April) that the decision to grant the United Kingdom a Brexit extension last week could “poison” the European elections, in which the UK is now likely to take part.
“I fear that it will continue the uncertainty. I fear that it will prolong the indecision. And I fear most of all that it will import the Brexit mess into the European Union," ALDE chief Verhofstadt told MEPs in Strasbourg.
In a surprise admission, Verhofstadt said that "I never thought I'd say this in my life [...] but maybe the only thing that can save us is Nigel Farage", suggesting that Labour and Conservative forces will be forced to find a cross-party agreement to counter the former UKIP leader's new Brexit Party.
Talks are set to continue in Westminster later today between the two British parties, despite the lull of the Easter recess.

    honestly you need to do research into farage and see what he has done over the past 2 years. he is a plant by the establishment to split the votes between UKIP and the Brexit party, this is really basic stuff to see. he left UKIP with the hope that it would fall apart without him, and if Brexit failed (most likely scenario) he could make a new party and get ALLLLL the votes.. but where his plan didn't succeed is when Gerard batten stepped up for UKIP and brought the party up to the high its at today. and now you see farage trying his best to still destroy ukip, calling all its supporters "far right tattood up thugs" etc, pushing the SAME narrative as the MSM is pushing about UKIP, seeing a connection here? @@greatstuff8554

    UKIP are on 7% of the national vote, whilst The Brexit Party are on 27%, therefore a vote for UKIP is a vote for Labour and the Conservatives. Reforms in Europe are not needed because of Brexit. Brexit was needed because there [were] a lack of EU reforms. joe bloggs The idea that the “sentiment” of the EU takes precedence over its “practice” is utter nonsense. The only point that can be agreed with is that the UK is an ageing population, hence age divide in the referendum with 70% of 18-24 voting to remain and a high proportion of over 60s voting to leave. Some EU reform is required, but that wouldn’t have changed Brexit because not only is the UK poorly informed, Cameron didn’t voice the generous concessions given by the EU.

  • @chewypiano7194

    @chewypiano7194

    5 жыл бұрын

    @joe bloggs" the ''sentiment'' everybody getting along in some sort of utopia is a great theory but in practise it just doesn't work like that...": The purpose of the EU far extends some utopia of collectivity and "getting along". One out of many examples, EU membership benefits our economy in terms of GDP by 5%. There are many more arguments that substantiate that the EU is far from the image you are portraying. " I have seen nothing from the remain camp in terms of reform and the way the EU has acted, many can now see their behaviour towards nations who want different rules or opt outs and why the question should be ''why shouldn't nations be able to choose for themselves??'' The EU is suppose to be democratic right?": The remain camp has nothing to do with introducing reforms to the EU; that is the elected MEPs that do so; therefore that argument is void. The EU has not acted in a poor manner; they have maintained a constant position of protecting the interests of their member nations; they have been open to the idea of an EEA/EFTA option, but it was us Brits who voted to leave based on unclear terms, therefore the blame lies completely with us and our politicians. Your last point is contradictory; countries do have opt-outs as each democratically elected MEP in the EP and elected head of state in the EC can opt out of policies. "I think the ''Leave'' camp would win by a landslide, remember we have legitimate democrats in this country who voted remain but would vote leave as they believe in democracy.. David Camerons concessions were terrible, if he could of rescinded the Freedom of Movement then UK would've of remained no doubt..": Cameron's concessions would have made Britain able to opt out from further EU political integration. It would also limit access to migrant benefits received.It also guaranteed that Britain would not have to engage in any Eurozone bailouts. I can carry on but you seem to understand that the concessions (that I believe you do not understand or know about) were not "terrible". Your point about Freedom of Movement is absurd considering that is a legally defined 'freedom' of the Single Market that is supported widely. In terms of a referendum today, it wouldn't be leave or remain; it will be a form of leave or remain; out of the contradictory forms that were advocated for, only one can be implemented. If this was 'no deal', I believe remain would gain a majority and if it were the deal, I also believe remain would win a majority; if I even was wrong, it would be far from a "landslide". "the best thing for the EU is to let us go ASAP because if they make it hard countries will follow": That statement hints at a degree of ignorance considering EU approval rates have increased significantly across the member states. All of the other 27 member states have remained constant in their negotiations and have reiterated that they won't leave the EU in the foreseeable future.

    It might well help your objectivity, Mr. Verhofstadt, if you were to temper 'the exuberance of your verbosity' with a little common sense. We have no problem with Europe. We do not 'despise' Europe. We are not 'leaving Europe'. We are European, by history, finance, emotion & culture. Post-brexit, we shall still be here, just off the coast of France & Belgium, still buying & selling with you, still travelling to & from you. What we WON'T be is beholden to your over ambitious plans to subsume national interests to your zealous, impractical plans for a 'United States of Europe'. For all you claim to be a Liberal, your comprehension of democracy seems a bit suspect. The very trouble the British government is having getting the 'leave deal' approved is because we have democracy at work. If you are so sure Britain is alone in her mistrust of your schemes, organise referenda throughout the other 27 countries - find out just how strong your support really is. I bet you wouldn't dare!

    Hardly anyone voted for him, most of the people in Belgium hate him. The problem is that Verhofstadt is the head of the ALDE group, so people vote for other party's without knowing their vote will end up in favour of Guy Verhofstadt. Best not to vote any party connected to ALDE.

    Caledonia is confident our future lies in the EEC but the independence vote after 2019 may go down to the wire as the nation Scotia is evenly divided if a 2nd referendum ,after the one in 2014, goes ahead. Again oldies dying out and young 16 year olds may tip it towards independence as the over 70,s are pro the Union pro Brexit by a large amount of voters the older they are,the more conservative.

    I agree with Verhofstadt. At last, something solid. They should not have delayed Brexit, just let us go. Instead of saying "what is it that the British want, well watch this, "we want a legal, defined exit", from you undemocratic cretins.

    Yep democratic Scotland says bin Brexit so following your democracy definition, great stuff, it means Scots can opt out of Brexit., as we took a democratic vote rejecting Brexit like your democratic decision rejecting the EEC but you have a problem because in 2019 ,a second referendum vote on the deal might see the deal rejected and UK stays in the EEC or Brexit rejected overturning the 2016 decision as the oldies die out and the youth new voters reject Brexit.
