It was a legal hit but Tatum had a reputation for hurting other players as he was known as "the assassin". Hard hits just aren't necessary as now players can be fined or even ejected from the game for doing such. Darryl really sounded like a nice guy. Tatum has since passed away too.

My older brother and his son both played college football. My family has always felt grateful that they had no significant injuries. My brother played at KU with John Hadl, who died recently. JH had Parkinson’s and blamed football on its development. I remember seeing the Dennis Byrd injury since I live in KC and was watching the game. I love football even though there are health risks.

I think the NFL should take these hits that occur after the player is already on the ground more seriously. When a large number of undisciplined players are suspended from the division, it's up to those who come in to decide whether to throw away their playing career or educate themselves and play fair.

I would never let my future kid(s) play football. The risk of getting many concussions is simply way too high, as well as the risk of a neck/spinal chord injury. I’d probably let them play a sport like hockey, or lacrosse, because hitting is a smaller part of the game. For example in hockey, you can take the puck from someone by using your stick to hit it away from them, and there aren’t always body checks, but in football, say the opponent has the ball, the sole objective is to use yourself as a human projectile to stop the rush.

So many things happened in the game Reggie Brown got injured. The Silverdome was so loud the refs threatened to penalize the Lions. It was the last game of the season and the Lions needed to win to make the playoffs which they did in the final seconds. Oh yeah and some guy named Barry Sanders ran for 2000 yards that season during that game lol

I'm probably going to jump on that bandwagon.

December 1997 during a game the Detroit Lions linebacker Reggie Brown suffered a serious spinal cord injury during a game that left him paralyzed, unconscious, unable to breathe, and near death. This undoubtedly led to Barry Sanders deciding to retire after the 1998 season. The key offensive tackle was traded and Barry would not get the blocking he needed to avoid serious injury.

I got knocked unconscious twice while playing football. Once in high school scrimmage against a school for the hearing impared the guy did not hear the whistle on a punt and hit me at full speed helmet to helmet. I was only out 10 or 15 seconds. I woke up and felt fine. The second time was in college at practice when another defensive back and I both were making a tackle and hit head to head at high speed. The weird thing was when I woke up I saw the same blue sky from the first time and we were in a dome. After a few seconds the sky dissolved back into the roof of the stadium. Back then they asked you the date, who was president, and looked at your eyes for dilation. Never had any side effects and finished both events. It was just how it was done in the 80's. I played football 6 years and never missed a play due to injury.

Just think: one person is hitting another person so hard that it could paralyze them........all of this just because of a game??? Receivers coming across the middle need some kind of rules to protect them from serious injury that could affect the rest of their lives. Those Jack Tatum kind of hits need to be outlawed. Maybe they should include those hits as targeting, like they do with the QB.

@@anthonywilliams5222 That's good. But I still think I see receivers being clobbered when they come across the middle. I know football is a rough game, but maybe they could make a rule that the receiver can't be hit in the air......that maybe he needs to have landed on the ground first and taken a couple of steps or something.

@@Aralight13, @stay high Lusting for savagery is the way of animals, not humans. You've lost or don't have humanity or compassion for fellow humans. Basically you're a high functioning empty-hearted animal, like Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy and his crew. They get off on the pain of others.

The tough thing about the physicality of football is that, in any collision, block or tackle, you are better off to be the hammer than the nail. If you shy away from Contact, you are more likely to be injured. But in ironic fashion, if you embrace the Contact, you are likely still to injure the opposing player. The Damar Hamlin injury was a case of a freak accident, where Hamlin was the nail and Higgins the hammer, into Hamlin's chest area.

I've been saying for years that there's no need for tackles and that the NFL should switch to flag football. It almost always results in really angry NFL defenders.

I hate this game,,let me revise my statement l don't mind watching this game. But l hate have to watch my son when he played it,he loves this game,,and now he is assisting coaching this game at the college level. See I'm spinal column patience myself! But my injury l took in a car accident 30 years before any surgery was put too it and I'm just now getting to move around, clean some of the house, spend a little time with my younger children,,this is a lifetime rehab for me out of 2 major spinal fusions within 5 years and 2 nerve surgery too my left arm in that same time period, I cringe every time I see a collision of a person's body up against anything else!!!!

The Player's Union needs to get the dirt and sod fields back as mandatory 2 feet 1 sand 1 dirt they'll hit the ground better than they do with artificial turf but they slow the traction will require more funding to the up keep but they'll create job's the weight requirements of certain positions will require science and nutrition rather than weight lifting they could do better for the league and the players but they thinking about what to do after the season 😂 buying stuff. They got a union but no unity😂

And dont say it is football....if u carrying ball thru the field in your hands. Only real football is FOOTBALL- soccer in your language. Not hand carrying and passing...more like heavy handball that is ...Just muscles, helmets and run..thats all. I really feel sorry for all that players losing their legs, backs, lives etc. It is a dumb sport, with braindead players and golddigging cheerleaders-starting in highschool- that is all.
