I had ‘forgotten’ that This scene is so good and works so well as the eps 1 cold open - and Alvaro Morte puts in such a great performance. Like the 3000 years after the breaking text at the start, great work!

@@Echidna23Gaming Part of what makes epic Fantasy great is the way different threads come together. Think GoT with Danny on one side of the world and the Lannisters on the other. Imagine Logain story expanded and over the season we see him conquering and being Lord Dragon with big battles and politics then being defeated and brought down in, say episode7. You get to see the WT politics and the power of the AS. Running parallel to this is the story of Morraine and the EF5. I believe that would lift the show and pull people who love GoT, Vikings, Last Kingdom and shows like that. Almost everyone I introduced the show to believe that it's not epic enough

Very strong cold open to Episode 1, and it fits well with the Moiraine voice-over prologue.

Thanks, Diana! We thought so, too. And, as it rolls into the title sequence, it really grabs a tone and sticks with it, once you see the rest of Episode 1. I know they didn't use the title sequence in Episode 1 originally, but it's the perfect split between that intro and cold open until the drop into the Two Rivers.

Now that was a riveting introduction to the magic system and the myth and fear of the Dragon's power. Very nice!

Right?! It fits so well. The first time I saw Episode 4, I knew the cold open would work for Episode 1.

Wow! Literal chills. It's what I thought they would do with the Logain storyline - make the audience think he was the real Dragon Reborn.

This is a great cold open. You could even put the other cold open after this and it would make it make more sense in context.

I'm liking the idea of swapping the original to kick-off episode 4, without the Moiraine cliff scene. It could really set the stage for Liandrin at the right moment.

This settles it, I really wish this were the cold open to ep. 1 instead of 4. Great job!

This is great! The episode 1 Cold Open should be swapped with this. So the original becomes the cold open for episode 4 (Cut it to end at Moiraine’s face looking down at the Red sisters) so that it is obvious she has this on her mind upon waking up. I think this helps contextualize Liandrin’s plan to gentle Logain within that episode.

Great point. Introducing Liandrin in Ep. 4 by showing her hunting a random male channeler IS better with this swapped. And I would actually enjoy it there as driving the narrative about Liandrin.

That's a much stronger opening I wish you guys luck and sharing this particular segments other people

Episode 1, with this intro and cold open, ends up in the middle of my favorite episodes now. It's been a lot of fun to re-imagine the introduction of characters and themes with the material that Amazon created.

While I won't claim to be without complaints about the Amazon series, I am thankful that it exists and I try not to complain or point fingers excessively (or at least to only do so at appropriate times). I admire that stated your comment so well, giving credit to Amazon for having created this, while you simultaneously re-weave an improved version. Definitely. Works well. The red ajah cold open was just a wasted opportunity and a vessel to give Moiraine a bit of screen time. This has real impact. I doubt it will happen but I really hope they would put some effort into refactoring S1 in the lull between S2 releasing prob in 2023. Maybe re-add the edited Egwene pool scene as a cold-open somewhere else. First I wanted to see of Moiraine was walking into the inn.

This makes it so much more impactful when we first see him caged, now the audience already knows who he is

Dude. This is the kind of set up I had hoped to see in the show. These are the kind of questions that needed to be set up for non-book readers right away. This is the proper hook. Not "who could possibly be the dragon?? It could be aNyONe!" for 8 hours... The fan edits have been night and day compared to the actual show and it's been kind of disheartening if I'm being honest. Also, the mixing of animations with the live action works very well. I've seen that being discussed for these and I just wanna put another voice into the ether that the animations work well here. Animation mixing with Live action has been done before and worked well and does here too. Plus you can show a lot more with animation that is, apparently, difficult to convey in live action..

I like the change up of the Ghealdan scene over the cold open that did happen in season 1, but I don't think the line about "What is a crown to the Dragon Reborn" needed to be cut. It flows better than the king just blurting out "You really believe it, don't you?" for no apparent reason.

Watched it again to remember. We liked the idea of the viewer asking what the King is referring to, without already being told. We wanted them to say, "believe what??" We thought it made the seen less like exposition, leaving some question to what Logain actually believes, and letting the audience try to tie the intro and Logain's comments about the Dragon to how this all came to be. But I'll review this again with Taylor and see if we want to come back to it. Thanks Rainbow Everything!

Yes, a few things were cut too much. Eg the wound on the king - it feels like less deep. But it's supposed to be an intro, so leaving it as long as the original would have probably spoiled the cold open feel. Great job anyway!

I don't mind the Moraine intro piece, but the Reds chasing down the 2 men gave me HEAVY Zena vibes (& I was legitly worried). & agree with you (on another video) when you said that chase open would've gone MUCH better with another episode. THIS opening sequence does a MUCH better job of generating long term conflict, depth & interest. As much as I like Moraine's intro/exposition open, I ALSO agree that the show would've been better served & would befit the over dramatic entrance scene where a rain-soaked Lan enters the Winespring Inn 1st & introduces the mysterious figure removing her hood; Aes Sedai Moraine Demonized. VERY well done, the time & effort REALLY shows! Very professionally done :)

Love it! I wanna see the rest of what you and the ER have done!

Love it. That sets the scene, sets a great tone, raises the stakes, works even better as the 'who's the dragon?' question and makes the most of Alvaro. Sure one day Rafe and the team will tell us why they used their cold open (there obvs will be reasons) but its fascinating to see other options. Cheers gents, great start!

hit the nail on the head. the cold open for ep1 needed to 'set the stakes' and the create interest and set the tone straight away. I still can;t believe the actual cold open ever made it past editing.

It has been a lot of fun to see the intro animation, then this Logain scene, and then Episode 1. It works almost too well, that I want it to have happened that way. Lol. I love how it complicates the who is the dragon question immediately, but makes it a question of: is Logain the Dragon, or is it one of these four? Why did this Aes Sedai stop here and not Ghealdan? That's a better mystery in my opinion, flipping their approach a bit, but setting a tone and an urgency to knowing this with War in the South and the Dark One's forces in the Two Rivers.

Hindsight is 20/20. Damn. I would have settled for the actual Prologue on EOTW. Afterall that is what hooked me... 30 years ago. I don't even finish the the first 1/4 of EOTW without that Prologue. Even the Cold Open with Liandrin would have been ok if there had just been a little more context. But hey... hindsight is 20/20. But it's WOT and I'll take it any way I can get it. 3 decades is a long time to wait.

Fun, right?! We are overwhelmed by how well it works with the first episode as far as themes and world-building.

That works very well!

People who get angry that the showrunner and other didn't see the sense in this are missing the whole pioneer thing. It's very hard to be the first to imagine something. Much easier once you have seen something. I know this from years of directing plays. A new play is much harder to do for the first time and that is already written. A playwright shops his or her play because they need to see it to fix it.

This is was exactly how it should have started. The cold open from episode one was not good.

I like this better! And I wish the show would incorporate their amazing lore animations into the actual show.

Still, quite honestly one of the best scenes of the entire series. And, in thinking about it now... . **SPOILER BREAK FOR NON-READERS** . . . When anyone read Eye of the World, did you think that this "Logain" False-Dragon guy was going to make it to the Last Battle? Kind of excited to watch the live-version progression of his character (provided they don't screw it up of course by doing something like merging him with Taim or some other stupidity).

So... am I going to have to watch the series again? Because I think I'm going to have to watch the series again.

It works so much better once you watch the whole thing episode. It just ties in so well. When Perrin mentions war in Ghealdan. And then they talk about the Aes Sedai maybe on her way south. It’s just really powerful.

My Favorite Book Series of all time! It was Amazing, and the show is good as well!

I really wanted to like the show. Its to bad, because the cold opens were sooooo good. After the first anyway.

Uhm yeah... Let's call it the dusty wheel cut... but simply just put loghains amazing scene. lame? however you cut it, it has been messed up. maybe in 50 years someone will refilm it proper.

I liked it but I think it would have been better if you included keeping the clip of Logain using the power on the king's two armsmen. I stand by my previous comment (from the animation opening). I do not like the mix of the animation leading right into Logain taking Ghealdan. I would have preferred Moiraine's voice over with a extended scene of Logain advancing (without any of the king or his armsmen's dialogue). We see what Logain can do (destruction) and then pick up with the dialogue between Logain and the king. We see Logain use some type of magic to almost kill but instead he uses it to heal. Then go to the black screen and into the rest of the episode

We tried variations with it. But, we ended up liking the first presentation of the One Power when he stops the knife and heals. Taylor convinced me, and I agree with him, now. I stand by loving the animation lead in, but I may try a voice over on the Logain clip. That could be an interesting mix! Thanks, Andrew!

The only slight wrinkle.. "this *child* is coming of age.." .. next scene, a clearly *adult* Logain.

Yeah. It does get me every time. I’m annoyed by that.

Logain was litteraly the only good thing about this mediocre adaptation of one of the greatest fantasy epics of all time. Why must people ruin great things for the sake of ideology?!?!
