New Technique Used In Dynamic Drum Solo- Ken Loomer Big Band

Музыка

This is one of my Ken Loomer Big Band concerts that I do at the Straz Performing Arts Center in Tampa, Florida. When it`s my turn to do my drum solo, I want it to be dynamic and exciting for the people who come to my concerts. Over the years , I have tried out to use new drum techniques I have learned to make for a better solo. A few to point out is my single stoke roll using fingers, but as you can see no movement of my arms , wrist or fingers to do it. Playing the inside of the bass drum with my left hand, while doing cross overs with my right hand. All the new cymbal solo playing using my technique of stick on stick off the cymbal. Of course I love to use lots of dynamic`s and bending of notes off the toms. Playing with just the sticks doing flams. With the great sounding wide open tuning of these classic Slingerland drums, my drum sound projects so well in this concert hall. Always a joy for me to perform with all of my outstanding musicians in my Big Band.

    I got to see Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, and Louie Bellson because of my father. I got to know Buddy well. He was always so kind to me. One time he gave me a drum lesson and let me play on his Slingerland drums. Louie Bellson when I told him where I could get some of his charts to play with my Big Band, he just sent them to me. Gene Krupa gave me his brushes. To see pictures of me with all of these drummer legends, here is the video kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIin0NB6ZtHSps4.html Glad you got to see these great drummers in person. It`s always about the music first for me, so I`m so glad I did all the hard work of having my own Big Band and doing these concerts. I must be one of the rare drummers now leading a swinging-roaring Big Band. Thanks so much for your comment.

    Start practicing! He’s not playing anything that hasn’t been done by the Master. Like Mr Dick Cully clearly has done as well, Buddy Rich can be mimicked but never I mean NEVER duplicated! Ken is a might fine player and I’m sure he agrees whole heartedly! Practice pays off!!!

    @@tophatjohnny I for sure agree no drummer will ever even be close to what Buddy played. I got to know Buddy and he is the reason why I have my own Big Band. It`s always about the music first for me. One time I told Buddy I wanted to have my own Big Band because I love the music he played so much. He said, "Ken don`t ever let anyone tell you can`t have your own Big Band to play the music you love. Just work hard young man and do it". Buddy always direct and to the point. Buddy was always so kind to me. He even gave me a drum lesson and let me play on his Slingerland drums. To see pictures of me and Buddy and of me playing his drums, here is the video kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIin0NB6ZtHSps4.html Since I did work hard and now have my Big Band and get to play with so many outstanding musicians doing these concerts. When it`s my turn to do a solo, I want it to be dynamic and exciting for the people who come to my concerts. It`s for sure in the Buddy style, but I never copy what he played note for note. Don`t want that style of drumming to die. I know Buddy played with his right hand inside the bass drum. I decided to play the inside of the bass drum with my left hand while the right hand is doing crossovers. This at the 1:37 mark. Buddy never played what I did, but it`s for sure in his style. Same when I played just the cymbals. I did it my way using sticks on sticks in the air while also playing the cymbals. This at the 4:45 mark. Buddy never played this. I just made it up in the Buddy style. But I`m most proud of having my own Big Band to play all of this great music for the people live. I`m sure Buddy would agree with me on that statement. Thanks for your comment.

    @@tophatjohnny No way am I going to stop kicking a Big Band. Until a drummer sits in that chair, and tries to play those great arrangements with 15 professional musicians, then you will know the work it takes to be a leader. What I learned the most from Buddy is how to make the music sound so much better with your playing and to always give 110% in what you play. The people will let you know if they liked your performance for sure. Thanks Johnny for your comment.

    Hi Ken. I love the way you keep the music of the big band alive, it’s a superb band driven by a superb drummer. I look forward to my once a month rehearsal with a 16-piece big band here in Carlisle, the capital of Cumbria tomorrow night and although I haven’t half the drumming skills you have in this genre of music I love playing the music of Count Basie, Stan Kenton and the vocal numbers of Sinatra etc. and your playing inspires me to carry on the big band jazz tradition! Cheers, David.

    The drumming here is really, *really* good: of that, there is no doubt. That being said, I'll ask the question: what's the 'New Technique' ? I see a great deal of really tight, solid Buddy Rich -influenced drumming here, and some excellent tip'o'the hats: the 'stick trick', the high-speed 'churn the butter' rolls on the snare, doubling on the kick tom with the foot pedal and stick, playing the rims...all hallmarks of Buddy Rich. One thing I do note is that the left-hand snare rolls here are played with the grip palm-down, whereas Buddy did most of his left-hand snare rolls palm-up with push-pull. The camera angle is pretty one-dimensional and the audio isn't good enough for me to discern whether, for instance, the kick drum is heel-toe, or just toe. Maybe I'm missing some nuance: and I'm not in any way taking away from the beauty of this great solo or the technique - which is clearly studied, practiced, and perfected. I just wonder what's new about it. Unique --yes: unfortunately, most drummers today don't really approach the instrument in this way anymore.

  • @KenLoomer

    @KenLoomer

    Thanks for your very thoughtful comment. I have my own technique of playing certain things that I have never seen a drummer do since I made it up myself. Since this was only a one camera shot from the back of the concert hall, no way to see what my bass drum technique is doing. But I do play heel down on the pedal. That is why you never see my leg move up. As far as New Technique, I have my own way of doing the fast single stroke roll as you can see at the 5:38 mark. Notice that my arms, wrist , or fingers is not moving. But yet you see and hear this very even fast single stoke roll. Never seen any drummer do this technique of rebound off the fingers not moving. Another drummer notice this and said it was Spooky .Let me know if you have seen this with another drummer. My way at the 4:02 mark of doing fast single stoke of just the left hand. Just a rebound off the no moving finger locked in. I know Buddy did with his right hand playing the inside of the bass drum. So I decided to play the bass drum with my left hand while doing crossovers with my right hand on the snare and tom at the 1:37 mark. Buddy style of playing, but just my idea on a different technique to make it work. The cymbal playing with just the stick playing in the air, then back to the cymbals. This happens very fast at the 4:45 mark. My buzz roll technique very different than what Buddy played. I have my own way to do it with control at any volume. So this should help with some of the new drum technique which I have not seen any drummer used before.
