Amazing New Drum Solo Technique

Музыка

This is my drum solo that I did at my Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet concert at the Glenridge Performance Arts Center in Sarasota, Florida. I`m always trying out new idea`s on what to play using the drum technique I have learned over the years. At one point during my drum solo, I wanted to do something very simple with just the left hand doing fast singles, and the right hand just tapping the ride cymbal. This will give the solo a chance to bring down the level of sound and make people listen to what I`m playing in a simple way. Another new technique I thought of was playing on the edge of the cymbal with my left hand while my right hand was hitting the left stick to produce a clicking -cymbal sound. Through out this solo I`m doing new idea`s based on the technique that I have. I always want my drum solo to be exciting and interesting. The people will let me know right away if they like what they are hearing. Here I`m using my Gretsch Renown Maple drum set with the 16x20 inch bass drum, 9x12 inch tom, 14x14 floor tom, 5x14 snare, and a 5x10 soprano snare. These are excellent drums with all wide open full tone sound. I can clearly hear every beat and roll I`m playing and I love the smaller size drums with the music I play with my Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet. I will be posting more from this concert. You can also check out the many concerts I have posted of my Ken Loomer Big Band.

I don`t know what to say Glenn about your kind works to me. It means a lot to me that someone like you would take the time to express how you feel about my playing. My goal was always to have my own bands, Jazz Quartet, Trio, and Big Band. With hard work and the desire to do it, I have done it. It`s always about the music first which is what I learned the most from Buddy. I love playing with my outstanding musicians and just supporting them to make the music feel good and exciting. When it`s my turn to do my one feature drum solo, I want it to be exciting and dynamic for the people who come to my concerts. I always give a 100% in every performance that I do. The best for me is to play live music, no tracks, and to be able to express myself on the drums. I`m still learning all the time to be a better drummer and band leader. Thanks so much for your comment.

I came more out of the school of Ringo than Buddy but I always appreciated the great jazz masters and would siphon off little bits here and there of their astounding techniques. I started in 6th grade on snare drum and I remember staying up late one night and seeing Louie Bellson on the Tonight Show, it blew my mind. Seeing the relaxed ease Louie had in his wrists helped me greatly as I learned the rudiments. This cat has that same relaxed, effortless style that belies the actual Herculean effort he's putting in. This was a lyrical, well arranged and extremely exciting drum solo...just incredible.

What a very thoughtful and wonderful comment you just wrote to me. Since I grew up with the music of the Beatles in the 60`s, I always loved Ringo Starr. Like he said, I can`t even do a roll, but his drumming for the Beatles was just perfect. The drum parts he made up like Come Together was way ahead of what drummers were doing back then. I got to know Louie Bellson very well. He even gave me a few drum lessons and let me play in his band. It was the same with Buddy Rich. I looked at these two drummers and everything they played at a high level looked so easy for them to play. I got to know Buddy Rich also and he gave me a lesson. Here is a video I made showing the pictures of me with Buddy and Louie and the stories I told about them. Here is the link kzread.info/dash/bejne/dIin0NB6ZtHSps4.html The reason why I have my Ken Loomer Big Band is because of Buddy and Louie. Buddy Rich was the one who told me don`t let anyone tell you it can`t be done to have a Big Band. Just work hard and go for it young man. Well I did work hard and form my own Ken Loomer Big Band. Louie Bellson even sent to me some of his charts which I have played and posted it on my channel. Amazing..shades of Buddy Rich with the fast single strokes and crossovers, and of Carl Palmer with those cymbal solos. Especially those single strokes with left hand on the snare..those are incredibly hard to do one other drummer can do those as well: Steve Maxwell. Outstanding Ken you are always an inspiration. Very important to play on drums you like with the right tuning. I always want my solo to be exciting with new ways to play them. Thanks Joseph for your comment.

I take great care of these Gretsch Renown drums. Very easy with these drums to have the big wide open tuning that I like. Every beat that I play comes out very clear on these Gretsch drums. Thanks for your comment.
