The way I see it is that these exercises allow you to push yourself beyond what you might normally play and it gets the creativity flowing because once you develop the techniques beyond your normal reach you then start to apply it to your own style of playing, otherwise you wouldnt even learn the rudiments. I doubt Dave didnt copy other drummers.
