Caravan Drum Solo - Ken Loomer Jazz Quartet

Музыка

This is the famous song Caravan that so many jazz drummers have done in the past. Drummers like Gene Krupa,Buddy Rich,Louie Bellson,Art Blakey,Max Roach,Mel Lewis,Jo Jones,Jeff Hamilton,Shelly Manne,Sonny Payne and so many others have done this song in their own way. So I wanted to to pay tribute to all of these great jazz drummers who I have learned from all of my life. This is from a concert I did for the Sarasota Jazz Club with my Quartet. Starting the song on piano is my very good friend Tony Castellano Jr. The one and only Franco Marino is on tenor sax. My main man on bass is Bruce Wallace. On this concert I decided to use my 1968 Slingerland Modern Jazz Outfit No.9N like in the Slingerland 1968 catalog. This has the 14x20 inch bass drum,8x12 tom,14x14 floor, and I used the 1976 Slingerland TDR 10 lug snare drum. These drums has the 3 ply shell with the solid maple reenforcing hoops. One of my favorite drumsets to play on for jazz.because it has a great open sound which is so clear to hear. For more info about me,go to kenloomer.com.

I wish that this style of drumming was more popular then it is, I feel like the younger generations need to hear this style of playing and that it should be on live TV again. Reality TV shows always used to star big bands and it feels like that age has passed, world-class quartet

When was the last time you ever saw a jazz musician on any of the Late Night Talk Shows today? Never! The only way people know about my Ken Loomer Big Band or Jazz Quartet is because I take the time to video my concerts and then put them up on my channel. But I`m happy with all the positive comments I get about my bands and drumming. Since most never see this style of drumming any more, it`s good in my small way that people, when they see and hear it, enjoy it so much. Thanks so much for your comment.

This is absolutely brilliant! Not only is Kenny's technique & timing world class - but his solos are interesting, mind blowing AND his drums are tuned impeccably! I've had the privilege of sharing the stage with some amazing drummers. Jimmy Cobb, Bernard Purdie and Danny Gottlieb come to mind (to namedrop a few). Ken Loomer should be as well known as they are!!

@@frankcampbell4154 I`m doing good and no problem answering any of your questions. Of course Covid 19 has canceled so many of my jobs since the music festivals, clubs, performing art centers have not opened up. All musicians have been hit hard because of Covid 19. I have never used Vater sticks.I have used Vic Firth 5A wood model for over 20 years now.It has the right feel and balance for my type of technique. I have never played West Side or Channel One since Buddy Rich told Cathy Rich he didn`t want anyone to play it when he passed away. That is why the current Buddy Rich Big Band has also never played these arrangements. I love the way the recording is so raw. Sometimes the beats are better distinguished from each other with less microphones. But gee, that is such expressive and well executed playing, also love the way play on sticks and whatever nice sounding metal is handy - no matter how good the drummer a long enough solo will demand new sounds to keep it fully alive.

I could never understand why 20" bass drums, were never as popular. Even Ringo, often used 20" Ludwigs, with all the screaming fans in the 60s. These Slingerlands look and sound sensational. They are certainly lighter to carry around.

I really do like the 20 inch size bass drums when I play with a Jazz Quartet. I have some video`s on KZread of me playing my 20 inch Gretsch Renown Maple Jazz kit which also sound great. With the right tuning, these bass drums can sound big and full and give the punch needed for this type of music I play.

I HAVE ALWAYS USED A TWENTY INCH LUDWIG BASS DRUM, EXCEPT FOR A FIBES 20" INCH BASS IN THE 70S. MY FIRST set WAS A ROUND BADGE GRETCH. MY DAD GAVE IT TO ME WHEN I WAS A 12., IT HAD A 2o" BASS TOO.I THINK A 2O" BASS SOUNDS GOOD, IF TUNED RIGHT.

I try to learn whatever I can from WATCHING you play. I like the fact that you are very good at supporting each of the soloists. And your solo of course DOESN'T need any support. I would like to ask you a couple questions when you get a little time. Thanks for the motivation. Btw....I got your DRUMSTICKS. They are great.

As a band leader,I always want to hire the best musicians who will play my arrangements of these classic jazz songs. They make me play better and so important to have the right feel for this music. Well you studied with one of the best drummers of all time in Joe Morello. I have used his Master Studies book which he wrote that is about the development of control and technique.I learned my finger control technique from Joe Morello. Of course I do teach and I`m always happy to help out drummers who came out to my jobs and ask whatever questions they might have. Thanks so much for your comment U2WB.

I just play to the style of music I`m doing Tony. I have my own jazz bands, both small and big and I hire musicians who can do the arrangements I want to do. Since these are my arrangements, I get to play what I feel and what will make the music sound the best. When it`s time for my solo,I just play what I`m thinking at that moment. As long as the people enjoy my bands and playing, then I know what I`m expressing is working. So do your own thing Tony and have fun playing.

As a mediocre drummer, with a good ear for sound from many years of playing sax in high school and Army band I always disect sounds from instruments, particularly drum kit pieces. Although it may not fit in with your music, if you can, try a Sabian 16" AAXplosion. The bell on it is awesome.

Very melodic and inspiring solo Mr Loomer! You have a very elegant style, in the tradition of Mr Bellson. When you get down really soft, to get that really nice bounce of the sticks, is it all fingers, or are you squeezing the fulcrum and using the middle finger to get that bounce?

  • @KenLoomer

    @KenLoomer

    7 жыл бұрын

I have used both ways of this style to play very soft. When I want a very low volume fast single stroke roll,I will use all fingers in the Joe Morello style. When I need more power and sound,I use mostly all wrist to get the job done. So I like to use a bunch of different techniques to do whatever I`m thinking about when I do this type of drum solo. For me,the hardest thing to do is to play very soft, and keep the flow going. Thanks so much for your comment.

You are correct Marc that I`m using a 14x20 inch bass drum. Both heads are Remo Smooth White Emperor with only a two inch felt srip on the back head.Front head has a medium tension and back head I tension the head so it will not have any wrinkles to it,so it`s a low tension. This gives me that big open warm sound which I like so much .

The size of this Slingerland throne is 13x24. All the American drum companies like Rogers,Ludwig,Slingerland only made this size throne. Today,no drum companies are making these type of thrones any more. Buddy Rich,Louie Bellson,Gene Krupa all used this 24 inch high throne.
