Ultra short throw projectors are marketed as TV replacement. Intended for use in a living room with ambient light using ALR screens which cost a lot too. Internal speakers meant for TV watching and youtube watching not for movies. For people like me who want a projector for cinematic experience, best option is to get a long throw projector with a laser light source. Laser source means quiet fan, and no need to replace lamps as it will last 20000 hours. Optoma UHZ65 is simply the answer

Subscribed because of the Awesome info! Currently rocking a short throw by benq and love it but really want to jump into the laser 4K ultra short throws. So happy to see the prices falling closer and closer to my budget territory. As soon as my lamp needs changing (probably a few more years from now) I’ll be jumping into these new bad boys. Here’s hoping they drop closer to 1500 dollar range or less by then!

Thanks to this review I finally managed to decide to get it. I also got a 120" Vividstorm S Pro ALR screen, but after a couple weeks playing around, I'm just not able to get it aligned to the screen properly. I will be building a cabinet for it, but I'm not sure how high I need it yet as I've been trying to get the edges of the projected image to just have about a 2cm border from the edge of the screen, top, sides and bottom, but I'm getting 2" or more. When I align the top and bottom, the sides of the screen are 2" away from the edge and when I align the sides, the top and bottom overshoot. Of course I can use the geometric correction to get the top and bottom within the screen area, but doing so squashes the image. I've moved the projector closer, further, up and down, turning from side to side to make sure there's no keystone issues and trying to get the width and height of the projected image aligned, but I'm finding it impossible... though the screen and projected image are exactly the same dimensions. I'm wondering if you are able to offer any advice as I'm getting very frustrated trying to get it to have a full 120" projected image fitting properly to the top, bottom and sides all correctly?? (I am even considering getting someone in, but it'll take me a while to save for that, and I'd like to get the projected image to fit so I have the correct height for the projector so I can get on with cutting wood and building my cabinet for it as it's a part of my therapy projects that is helping me distract a bit from losing my mother two weeks ago, and I'll be able to get all the stuff sorted so I have my living room and bedroom tidy again)

Great idea but you will want to bolt the cabinet to the floor and the cabinet needs to be heavy and then the projector needs to be attached to the cabinet as any slight bump of the furniture or projector means running through setup again and again. This is due to throw angle. Played with these before but setup and keeping inline massive issue. If your thinking of one definatly asked to set up yourself instore then think about buying one?

I’ve had mine for 10 days now. I already had a Qual Gear 100” screen which isn’t an ALR screen. I had real issues trying to align it properly with this screen. Unfortunately the SmartFIT app didn’t work with it and just kept throwing up an error. I have it projecting just on the wall for now as I have the Optoma ALR101 screen being delivered tomorrow. If you project on the wall, a short throw projector really shows up the inconsistencies in your wall so much more than my Optoma UHD51A traditional projector did, obviously due to the angle the picture is being sent from. This does affect the projected image before you alter it in the settings. App Store is welcome but isn’t great. Plex from the App Store doesn’t play in HDR so you’re better off using an Apple TV, Firestick or Nvidia Shield. On the plus side, the picture is fantastic. The colours really pop and the picture is more than watchable during the daylight.

Paul Monger Thats funny, i currently own UHD 51A as well and highly inclined to upgrade to this model. Thanks for the detailed info. Its very useful indeed. Just a quick question, how is the HDR performance as compared to UHD51A? For some reason, i am not too impressed with the HDR quality from 51A even after lot of tuning. The picture looks more detailed and realistic with standard HD (1080p) than 4k with HDR...not sure why! Btw, useful info on the image degradation while projecting on the wall directly. I currently dont own a screen so will have to plan for one when i buy this model.

My biggest problem with this thing is that it has to sit exactly where my center speaker is. With a 120" screen, there's barely enough room for my 10" high speaker below it. Not sure if I could place this projector with proper clearance. It might need to have a ceiling mount option.

Sad that you weren't able to test the power consumption. I use a petite short throw PJ from optoma (ML1050ST+) because what it lacks in resolution it makes up for in portability, low noise and minimal power consumption (around 28Watts max consumption). Therefore I am actually saving on my electricity bill while having a 100 inch TV. Won't upgrade till they're able to one up that list of pros by making the platform native 4K as well.

When viewing in a completely dark room, with white walls, is it better to have a white or black UST projector? Which colour projector is less noticeable while watching movies/gaming? I'm thinking of getting the Optoma P2............so can you still play games in game mode with HDR enabled? My LG TV has a HDR Game mode which allows HDR gaming and improved input lag at the same time. I'd hate to use the P2 for gaming in game mode for better input lag, but have to go without the HDR for games that support it. Also, I hear the Optoma P2 has an input lag of around 69ms while my LG TV is around 34ms. Is 69ms still ok for first person shooters? Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks

They sell the device with rooted Android that lowers the Input lag to about 35ms (MIUI about 90-110). But the 3D is very important for me and every test of Mijia or similar beamers said the Colors in 3D are wrong. Even the support of nothingbutlabel said 3D Colors are a bit green tbh… What's your experience with it? And is it really true, that 4k still works even in 3D mode?

I believe it's his screen, and not the projector. That expensive screen, though ALR, is not allowing the proper contrast. He needs a proper paint mix, otherwise, you're going to get those washed out blacks and less than stellar colors.

@Barrett Withers Well mine looks fine and that's on a beaded screen. But when do you ever see jet black in real life. The only black problem is any borders, which if i really wanted i could use black out cloth. Can't be bothered. I think these days the colours are being over emphasised to produce strong contrasts, everything looks like a cartoon.

Got excited about this, but when i saw the blacks (actually the lack of them) pretty much ignored this machine... Have had two 4K Optomas in the past (UHD300X and UHD60) and the image looked "flat" on both for the same reason . These machines are bright and sharp, but there is just no depth in the projected image. Looking at a big bright greyish image is very disappointing IMO. I would rather recommend buying an older LCD/LCOS/SXRD projector if you really after large screen experience.

Hello,, I got a problem with my Sony DN860 Reciver and my Optoma UHZ65UST projector, it doesn’t detected HDR when I played it through my Sony 4K blue ray till I change the installation, (i even have problem with a delay audio, I plugged HDMI ARC Reciver with HDMI ARC Optoma), then; HDMI Sony blue ray to HDMI Sony Reciver but this method doesn’t detected HDR and it’s also delay the sound with the video! So, I changed the installation to the following, The HDMI ARC between the projector and the Ricever still the same, I only moved the HDMI blue ray cable from the Reciver to the HDMI port of the projector directly, and in this case no Delay and HDR has been detected automatically, Dose my installation correct ? Or what do you Advise me, explain me more please, where is the problem?, is it on my Sony reciver ?

I just read that the single chip DLP laser projector is still susceptible to rainbow artifacts because it still uses a spinning color wheel to generate a sequence of RGB color. The only advantage of laser over traditional bulbs is brightness and longevity.
