    when mentioning input lag you didnt saying anything about the gaming mode on the P1. Gaming mode is suppose to reduce the input lag. I would love to know what the input lag is with gaming mode enabled. Best answer I found: 55ms (4K UHD, 60 Hz, Game Mode) SmartFIT and PureMotion must be disabled for Game Mode

    Great comparison, but I think the update should be made about additional ambient light during the day-time brightness test and also the $3,299 price from Optoma was an introductory price at launch and it actually sells for $3,799. Which makes it a full $1k more expensive than the VAVA in the US. Not an insignificant amount. Optoma is also available from more many more retailers, while the VAVA is basically limited to Amazon in the US. Optomas experience in the projection space really shows with all the options they give you. VAVA has some known picture adjustment settings especially if you switch sources/ports, picture settings, SDR/HDR and so on. Prior to this comparison, I was leaning towards the VAVA, after watching it, at similar price points, I'd buy Optoma. However with the pricing as it is.... it's hard enough to justify VAVA, but Optoma is even more expensive. Ugh...

    I wanted one of these and got the Vava because it was available much sooner (USA) and $500 cheaper. I regretted the choice and sent it back because of the noise. I could hear it clearly through quiet scenes in movies & TV and it was distracting. I bought the Optoma later on and it is decidedly quieter. I think the picture was quite similar. There were also interface differences that made the Optoma slightly better to me but the noise of the Vava was just a deal-kiler for me. If that's not an issue I think someone could be quite happy with the Vava as well.

    This is a very well done comparison. It's hard to match light levels with a daylight source, of course. I think the Optoma is the winner overall, myself. I wish laser projectors would come down in price to the level of LED or lamp-based. I would love to escape the tyranny of the lamp hour counters, but I don't want to drop $4000-plus.

  • @dwindeyer

    Just wanted to say that the weird ambient light test results appear to be as a result of different levels of ambient light hitting the projection screen... It's very obvious at 8:40 that more light is hitting the screen for the VAVA unit, you can see the greatly increased reflection in the black matte area under the screen. I suspect the same is for the open blinds test, the Optoma seems to have a very bright window vs a not as bright window for the VAVA.

    look at the blinds at 8:22 and 8:32 . They're not oriented the same, and that's why the ambient light is worse for the vava unit. If you look at the black area underneath the screen, you can tell it's not an apples to apples comparison, one is clearly more illuminated than the other, and it appears the light source is from the window on the left.

    4:00 -- What do you mean "almost identical connections"? I see 3 HDMI connections on the VAVA and 2 on the Optoma. That's not insignificant. The HDMI ARC is going to go to an external soundbar for surround sound, and one HDMI is going to be taken up by a Fire Stick or the like. Leaving no additional HDMI connections available on the Optoma for a gaming system or DVD player. Am I missing something?

    You have to see these in person in a proper environment to form a conclusion. This test/comparison was hardly scientific in the room he demoed. His camera settings could have been different for each one too, certainly the lighting was. The only way to compare properly is to see 2 screens set up side by side using and identical source.

    The VAVA keystone correction is so limited and bad, so I'm left with a super wavy line on my wall (doesn't seem to show up on my projector screen though). It only has Rec 709 (compared to the better Rec 2020 of the Optoma P1) also. The VAVA's HDMI CEC function isn't working fully either, only partially, with my Nvidia Shield Pro 2019. Aptiode TV is trash -- can't even play KZread videos from it properly (ads will play, but the actual KZread video will not), which is why I bought the Nvidia Shield. However, the VAVA can go up to 150" and requires less space from the wall, versus only 120" for the Optoma P1. So I ultimately decided VAVA was better, especially for far cheaper. I don't get such washed out images in a dark room on my VAVA as shown in your review video either. And VAVA absolutely looks stunning in daylight with all the windows open and bright light streaming in (combined with my VividStorm ALR screen).

  • @DeathStickD

    @DeathStickD

    That wavy line has nothing to do with keystone, that's an imperfection in your wall. That's why it doesn't show up on the screen. Any UST projector would have the same thing.

  • @peTeMelster

    @@DeathStickD Well, the point of keystone is to fix any slight imperfections. However, the VAVA's keystone correction is so limited that it can't even fix a minor imperfection that is imperceptible to the naked eye. If VAVA had 16 points instead of 8, it might have been able to fix the issue.

  • @DeathStickD

    @DeathStickD

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@peTeMelster it still wouldn't have, and that's not the point of keystone, the point of keystone is for when your screen or projector (your floor or ceiling) aren't level thus giving you a trapezoid image. It will not fix imperfections in your wall such as dips and dents. That's why a screen is recommended especially for anything that's short throw. The shorter the throw the more drastic an impact it'll have on your image.

    YES!!! My VAVA has a wavy line on the upper left and the lower right that I can't get rid of. It's not keystoning I don't think because it is not a straight line but rather it is truly wavy. I was projecting onto the wall, so I thought maybe that was it, so I moved it to another wall, and the curves are in the same areas of the screen edge. I am wondering if I have a defective unit.

    When it comes to contrast, I think that in a light room, the brighter projector will seem better. To really compare, don't you need to set brightness and contrast to some measure of equality versus using out of the box settings? (Anyone can ship a projector with default brightness on a higher setting.) Or, is out of the box testing what you are after? I know I spent hours setting up my projector and out of the box settings are not worthy of serious evaluation.

    How long does the Optoma take to turn on? I didn't like how long the Vava took to start playing a video, because with a chromecast, I'd miss the first 30-40 seconds because it had to boot Android every time. Also, can you turn off the Optoma with Google Assistant? Chromecasts can turn off most TVs that support CEC, but the Vava just crashes and shows a black screen while keeping the laser on.

    Comparison is useless without a proper calibration and knowing what gain the screen is. I would wait to pull the trigger until a proper calibration is done on both projectors. There were no actual test done on either projector. This comparison on picture performance is misleading. Personally I wouldn't have a white projector under my screen, it's just to distracting.
