What is the Ineos Grenadier? That’s the big question Steve Fowler sets out to answer in our review, although we already know what it’s not. Despite those naggingly familiar looks, this is NOT a Land Rover Defender and it’s most definitely NOT a Mercedes G-Wagen. It’s also NOT, according to Ineos, an SUV.
This is the new British brand’s take on the classic utilitarian 4x4 formula, a no-nonsense vehicle built to be tough, durable and great off-road.
Despite not being one, it’s certainly looking to fill the gap left by the old Land Rover Defender, but can it do so successfully? Will buyers who need to depend on their off-road vehicle in all weathers and across challenging terrain be convinced? Let’s find out…

The whole point of the transfer box leaver is that it’s mechanical - you are engaging low range, not an electric switch that takes forever to engage. The steering wheel also has a centre line so you can see where straight ahead is. Foot rest in concerning and no clear remedy for it either.

These days people spend 60k plus on Wranglers and the new Broncos nicely optioned are not far off. (welcome to the high inflation era) The Grenadier has better interior quality and seems to be engineered to a high standard. Plus, built in France with German components will command more money. The title claims “this is not an SUV“ and Steve repeats “this is not an SUV”. Then Steve’s comments show he’s clearly an SUV man. The entire reason this vehicle exists is to be a different option to what is available.

The modern Defender has already willingly stablished itself as the "BMW GS" of Land Rover, a vehicle so vaguely reminiscent of what it one was, yet so ridiculously priced, that its natural habitat is now the streets of Kensington and the parking of Harrods. G Wagens still retains its 4x4 blood but costs virtually double of the already overpriced Defender, which leaves a target market that even surpasses the wealth of an average luxury vehicle owner.

  • @Kacpa2

@@Mister.Unknown Because these marques seen and seeded market for this suv mess cannibalizing real offroaders and station wagons on both sides while replacing status car role from luxury saloons. Range Rover was the start, everyone copied it, and honed in rest of line ups to crossovers and suvs as they finaly found out what most women car is, from all ranges of wealth. High riding, "secure", "kill the other person" barn onwheels, or car that fakes these qualities well enough(all crossovers). In america it also affected pick up trucks similarily. End result is more money for them and little or no choice who legitimately need and want a proper car be it true offroader, manual transmission sporty wagons, or compact workhorse cheap pickup truck. All these are virtually gone, and even if some stranglers exist they are expensive. While this featureless SUV/crossover blob grows cannibilizing more and more of segments that used to exist and be affordable(B segment super mini wagons for example, we used tp get 207SWs, Ibiza wagon, Fabia wagon all these are gone as new cars). Its just a disaster... Things like Grenadier are a bit of hope, but its not so.ethong that can happen for too many more lost kinds of vehicles...

My pampered 1998 Jeep Cherokee has this EXACT steering. It requires some pretty intense attention on pavement, especially at highway speeds. But - just as Grenadier has decided - once you're in the soft/rocky/steep/tight stuff, it is indeed in its element. Moreover, one really DOES NOT want a servo going out when engaging diffs, etc. Mechanical is king when it really must count. I'm thinking a reviewer with some actual serious off-road experience might've had a different take on this rig...

Great review. Old school 4x4 for land owners which probably won’t appeal to the Chelsea Tractor brigade. I know the reviewer had a walkie talkie in the centre console but, my goodness that dashboard creaked, the Discovery’s, Range Rover’s and Land Cruiser’s didn’t but perhaps it’s because it’s an early press car. You need to take an exam before figuring out how to lock the differential but at least you don’t have to step outside and lock front wheel hubs as I had to with the Daihatsu F50 ( fantastic off road) I drove some forty years ago! Prices start at £60k. I’d rather a long wheelbase Jeep Wrangler.

A great quick review Steve. I guess there is quite a learning curve to fully understand what does what but as some one jumping into this car from an err... modern car with all the creature comforts learning what to do might be a tad daunting. This looks like a brilliant utility vehicle though and to get the most from it you need to not only read the manual but to experiment with the car as well along with the plethora of manual changes (read pressing buttons or changing switches). Out of the gate I'm pretty impressed. It'll be interesting if these cars end up being used for the school run, somehow I doubt it. Similarly being used in the more prosperous areas apart from the current exclusivity (new brand and model) it may well need to earn its stripes. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Steve. In my opinion it looks like the review don’t fully understand the dynamics that comes with hard-core solid axle 4x4,s. Most of the dislikes mentioned comes as spart of the package and don’ really bother buyers in this segment. We don’t expect a soft roader SUV to be brilliant off-road either.

An impressive car. However, the BMW engine is quite a complex one. It will be difficult to get it repaired or even serviced outside Europe, North America or Australia. I wonder how long the fancy middle console and the overhead display will last once the car experiences serious off-roading and corrugated tracks. Getting spare parts in less developed countries will be a headache. Still, this vehicle is much closer to a modern actual "Defender" than the new Landrover Defender. Well done.

The Defender shouldn't be a "volume sales" car, it should be a halo model that defines what the brand is so that people who want to be associated with that ethos, but don't want the compromises that buying such a vehicle entails, will continue to buy Freelanders, Evoques etc in their droves. By turning the Defender into an SUV Land Rover are undermining their own legacy.

@@stonemarten1400 Ouch! I saw a video by 4Xoverland where Andrew St Pierre said the same thing. He was hoping the ergonomical issues would be fixed in the final version. As far as the height goes, it doesn't sound like I'll be able to lift myself from my wheelchair to the cabin. I did climb into Yukons/Tahoes/Escalades on occasions before, but I couldn't pull it off on the daily and it looks like the Grenadier is even higher than those by a couple of inches. Flaws are subjective, for me me I'm not impressed by the front end, I don't like the central dash display, and the tires aren't tall enough, I am of an age now that would appreciate the auto gearbox despite all my previous Range Rovers and Land Rovers being manual, the real sticking point for me is the size, it's just too big for our needs, now a 2 door, that sounds interesting!!!!

Why would you want pin sharp steering on a 4x4 where it could get dragged out of your hand on ruts.. Why add a heated wheel something else to go wrong. This is what the Defender should have been and the new Defender would have been way better as a Discovery replacment. Land Rover put the BMW 6 Diesel and Petrol in Defender for some markets and they are a great fit. Wins with the locking rear diffs as this was missing on the Defender and Discovery. I think judgement slightly clouded by soft roaders and SUV's this is a work tool like a Transit or a Tractor.

I don't want pin-sharp steering on a 4x4 either, but because these cars will be used on road predominantly, I'd have liked the car's steering to be a little less vague - it will put some people off. It's about what most buyers want and the vast majority of buyers, Ineos says, will be 'lifestylers' not avid off-roaders.

@@steviefowler I would have said given the market the vehicle is aiming at Lifestylers would go for a Land Rover Toyota or Mercedes product. This is designed to be a working vehicle farmers, 4x4 and offroad users, utility companies. I signed up before the 1st prototype and the premise was initially to fill the gap left in the market by the Defender. Look to the South African and Australian Market the Land Cruiser is way more basic and harks back to the 1980's body style with the Troopy. I think the engine choices and driveline say it all here including recirculating ball steering.

Think what ineos have done is cool and far play to them. But it’s more expensive to the new defender for 1 and that’s expensive as well. 2 I would not be happy going off road compared to takeing an old defender or other second hand 4x4, due to the Value. Not detracting it is obviously very capable. 3 a lot of tech to go Wong but far play most car have to have these days. And it’s a shame they chose to build it outside the Uk. Personally I’m sticking with LR products due A I know how to look after them, B there are plenty of specialists which are far better than the main dealers and cheaper as well and tend to save money due they know there stuff and no messing about. And there is alot of third party products for any of the needs and wants. Out of my experience of owning several Range Rovers know I’m surprised how reliable they are, BUT that’s down to correct mantanace /servicing. I’ve found less reliability with so called reliable brands and products. Maybe I’ve been lucky/ unlikely in ways. Don’t get me Wong I don’t agree in the direction LR have gone, but equally Ineos seem to be making similar moves to what lr did int later production of the old defender.

Undoubtably well built, with some solid reliable engineering, but that design work will have cost a huge amount of investment, and return on investment always results in equivalent pricing at sale time. Just how much is this 'capable' off-roader, with poor road manners (hardly surprising given its off-roading bias) going to cost, and how many of the features seen here are going to end up being extra to that price? We've been seeing many journalists singing its praises, but I'm waiting for Ineos to declare their pricing before I'll believe it's worthwhile. That and waiting for Andrew St Pierre White of 4xoverland's final verdict.

I liked this concept initially but it seems a bit off the mark now. Utilitarian market has moved on to Ford/Japanese pick-ups. People spending this money want up-market SUVs, which the new Defender ultimately is. The old Defender represents something fundamentally British too (quirky, charming, uncompromising) - a strong USP this had as its supposed spiritual successor, right until the point they moved production to France. Personally can't see the appeal any more.

If you want to drive on road this misses the mark, rattles and has vague steering - just like the original Defender and is why most of us don’t drive them! I guess this is why Land Rover didn’t just continue building original Defenders……. But for a few customers in a niche market they’ll ignore the obvious flaws and tell us how brilliant it is and we should all buy one 😂
