I have a 2018 Ford PSD With a CP4 catastrophic failure. It has been at the dealership for 8 weeks - under warranty - and being jerked around no end by Ford.

Now that S and S diesel has a replacement for a CP4 fuel pump for the 6.7 Ford Powrrstroke, Ford needs to switch their pump to that. Make a deal with S&S, Ford.

Sounds like we need to ditch the low sulfur crap

Anyone with a 6.7 Powerstroke should install the S&S disaster prevention kit and run a lubricity additive with every fill up. It's very cheap insurance that limits repairing a cp4 failure to replacing the pump. If it comes to that, replace it with the S&S DCR pump. I love my 2017 F250 but it sucks that this problem has to be taken into consideration.

National Office of Defects?? Is that a thing? 🤣 I should get half my family jobs there.

Is the class action lawsuit seeking to mandate a recall or just provide $ compensation? If it is to provide compensation, usually the customers get a few bucks and the rest goes to lawyers and administrative fees.

If GM, Ford and Ram were reputable companies they wpuld take it upon themselves to replace the pumps and send Bosch the bill, the people buying these trucks spend a s**t ton of money on these vehicles.

I have a Early 2015 3500HD Dually with the LML Duramax & am Terrified of the CP4 Grenading itself. I use a Hotshots cocktail of Everyday Diesel & LX4 EVERYTIME I fill up & have done this almost since day one when the truck was New. Between the Constant Def system issues (Heater going out) & the CP4 Fear I have Really makes me wonder if owning this truck is even worth it. If I didn't have the Huge 42ft wheel we own this truck Definitely Wouldn't be sitting in my garage. I Love the truck, but the Constant Fear of having to spend 10K+ on a New fuel system, because of the Faulty CP4 Really PISSES ME OFF & Shame on GM for using this knowing it Wouldn't Hold up over time !!! Ford has to stick with the Cp4. They stupidly designed their 6.7 around it. CP3 won’t fit. But S&S finally built a pump to replace the CP4.

Have used Hot Shot EDT for 150,000 miles in my Ecodiesel. Nary a problem.

Should also expand it to include the epa for taking the lubricants out of diesel.

ANDDDDDD…….this is why we all tell you and others to use diesel fuel additives. Cummins actually recommends one for gods sake. Listen to those of us that know. It’s not just the CP4 which is a well known turd, all fuel pumps will be better served with an additive that adds lubricity to American diesel fuel.

I use to be a fan of Bosch, but now I'm done with any Bosch tools or parts. Here's why. I had the welds fail, on the power terminal tabs, of 8 Bosch glow plugs. All 8 failed. Inside a Bosch oil filter, most all the filter media was bunched up on one side. All the oil was filtered by a 3"x3" square. Fail A Bosch 4.5" angle grinder, had no grease in the gear box. The gears melted. Fail

Seems like Bosch lost touch with the quality control that they used to be well known for.

FYI, there is a recall for the Fuel pump in the RAM 1500 EcoDiesel. There isn't any parts to swap them out though.

@@goquickandiamoThe new parts are available. Just had it done in my Ram. The service advisor said parts and labor is $8k! Hopefully this new HPFP is an improvement.

I had not seen this update, thanks for posting to let more people know what that update on this case is; mine hasn’t blowup yet but I’m at 120K miles and feel it is only a matter of time. I love how the truck drives and pulls my trailer, but am uneasy about what may happen.

Glad my LMM has a CP3. I bought it new in 2009. Since day one, I've been running Power Service additive in it almost every tank of fuel. I buy it in s big jug and transfer it to small bottles that hold enough for two filllups. I also have a Colorado with a 2.8L. I use it in this truck too. NEVER transport that stuff in the truck cab. Don't get it on your hands either. It smells really bad.

I just got a notification in the mail. I am shocked it’s taken this long. I knew this would come.

Had one go in a sprinter… wanted 17k for a 4cyl repair. I drive an f150 now(@103k miles)

Just another example of why diesels are more expensive to own....and not for everyone. Good reporting!

Diesels that are manufactured to meet EPA regulations.

My 2921 Duramax 3.0 LM2 blew its fuel pump At 16,700 miles…never actually found out what pump it had. Complete fuel system replaced under warranty. Replacement pump blew almost immediately and took out the ECU at the same time. Fuel system and ECU replaced then spent 5 months trying to get it right Ended up settling with GM to get the vehicle replaced. So far my LZ0 is doing fine but still don’t know what pump it has.

Seems like every vehicle in the US with the cp4 should be recalled or every owner gets LX4 free for life 😂

You might consider running fuel treatment in any diesel.

Literally have been holding onto my $11k repair bill since 2018 for this class action to go through.

Bottom line is “Bosch” dropped the ball. The CP4 pump should have been discontinued years beforehand, I’ll guess around 2014. But anyone who started using this pump after all the problems started surfacing, and obviously knew that a problem existed,is also the problem.

Cummins was majorly concerned about the hit the CP4 failures was having on their reputation. The Cummins 6.7L is packaged to Rams spec who dictated the migration away from the CP3 to the CP4. There are leaked internal emails from within Cummins showing they were extremely concerned and wanted to put pressure on FCA to go to a different pump.

I have a recall for my 2015 ecodiesel Grand Cherokee, but they don't have the parts to complete it yet. Just a little information from an ecodiesel owner. Thanks for the great videos. I am thinking about a gm product like yours with the small diesel. Curios to hear more from you.

Duramax LML had it from 2011 to 2016 and my father in-laws let go at 80k miles. Fixed it by replacing it with a CP3. GM went to the HP4 to due to CP4 failure. Every single CP4 is a liability S&S diesel now created a replacement for the 6.7 powerstroke. Edit: doesn't matter which version of the CP4 they all fail doesn't matter on the 4.2 they are all junk.

It would be interesting to know if Denso licenses their diesel pumps from Bosch. And it also looks like the fuel is the culprit because they don’t have these issues in Europe (their fuel is higher quality).

Tim - please let us know as soon as you hear from GM as to whether the LM2 and LZ0 are Bosch CP4 or Denso fuel pumps. Appreciate it.

Spent about an hour searching for what fuel pump is in the current LM2 and LZ0 diesels and cannot find anything definitive.. Even tried searching for a parts replacement and there is little info. Hope GM responds to Tim's inquiry. Would be mutually beneficial for GM and their customers to instruct them about the need for additives to prevent damage. Maybe this ties into Tim's info regarding Tier 1 diesel recommendations by GM?

LM2 have a Denso HP-5. This is from another video made by a GM technician who took one apart due to contaminates (prob DEF) through out the pump and fuel system. He even shows the pump it’s cam roller and internal sludge/corrosion. Hope GM comes back and finally puts this to rest.

Quick note on the 6.7 Cummins: '21-Current no longer use the CP4.2, with them moving back to the CP3. The CP4 killed so many early Ecodiesel Ram and Jeep models. Many people thought they were unreliable, but it was the pump and cam gears on early models. All of that said, PLEASSEE use a good diesel fuel additive on any diesel, regardless of pump. And PLEASE keep those filters changed out! Very surprised to see Ford still running the CP4. Not sure if the new H.O. model will use it.

Ford doesn't really have a choice, there's not room for a CP3 pump. The 6.7 was built around the smaller CP4.2 pump.

@@tylough Exactly, I suspect that the new fuel pump aftermarket collaboration between S&S Diesel and Stanadyne to modify an existing proven pump platform specifically for the Ford 6.7 is the current alternative which has only just now possibly gone on the market.

I can’t see where ford doesn’t take a hit here. They know this issue and they still put it in there trucks when they know they can’t put a better one in it. My 6.8 just did this the other day I can’t fix it I hav t got that kinda money sitting around.

Our only vehicle 2016 GMC Sierra Duramax . Without warning the CP4 fuel pump blew up sending metal shavings throughout engine. Leaving us with a 16,410.57 repair bill. The financial hardship and stress is unbelievable . Literally leaving us struggling to pay our bills.

I use the same thing in my Titan XD. Small price to pay for the peace of mind. It lasts a long time too.

The CP4 failures are definitely an issue. However, I'll tell you that in my 20 years experience in the dealership world, I've seen exactly 2 CP4 failures in the Duramax. GM went to a Denso pump in the L5P. Ive seen at least 10 of those since 2017 fail. Now the postive side of the Denso unit, is they don't spit metal intl the fuel system.

I own a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Eco Diesel, and 2014 BMW 328D ,and VW Jetta SEL TDI I guess may have a problem

FYI- I own a 2020 Gen-3 EcoDiesel and months ago received a recall notice from FCA about these CP-4 pumps. The interesting/frustrating part is this is now (6+) months into the process but there isn't a remedy or parts available to have the CP-4 changed out yet. As an owner this is very frustrating knowing that my truck can leave me stranded at any time without warning and there isn't a reliable repair available if it does, let alone the timeline for how long I might be without my truck waiting for the repairs to be made if it does grenade. I'm not surprised hearing there is now a class action lawsuit dealing with this. Thanks for the information!!

If you run that Hot Shots secret everyday treatment during each fillup and dont run it below 1/4 tank you should have nothing to worry about. They sell it at Walmart and its less than $20 and treats up to 400 gallons. Small price to pay. You squeeze the bottle and it give you a measured dose. It increases the lubricity of the fuel. Been us8ng it since I first bought my 2016 Titan XD with the cummins diesel and have had zero issues.

Yep it's ridiculous. We tow with ours and I would hate to blow and get in an accident with my kids.

I have a 2023 Wrangler Rubicon with the Eco diesel. I bought it because they ended the Diesel and are going electric. I’m not going electric! I was a little pissed when I found out they sold me a jeep with a recal. Know that you can’t order them anymore and I have one I don’t even care. I love my jeep!!! I’m running fule additive. I always buy quality fule never run it low on fule and waiting for the fix. I don’t put a lot of miles on it. It has 4500 now so I’m not to worried.

Tim, what’s wrong with your cameras? Dirty lenses? It’s like I’m looking through a haze on your videos these days.

I noticed the same damn thing. Not sure what’s going on. I cleaned it and have tried different setups.

Huh, none of my CP4 vehicles (3.0L Volkswagen and 3.0L Ford) is on the list. Never misfueled either of them and have never had a problem with either. Maybe this will rear its head at 300,000 miles; but I'm not losing sleep at this point. I understand that they are not tolerant of misfuels, lack of filter changes, etc..

Wonder how tough it will be to change the fuel pump in the 3.0 durmax? Rear timing chain cover, rear mounted fuel pump. Any idea what the labor is on it?

The 3.0 oil pump belt replacement is 16.8 hours of labor per GM.

On the 2023 3.0 Duramax the interval is 15 years or 200K miles for the oil pump belt.

You didn’t do your homework work…the reason Bosh is not being sued is because use Bosh has a wear spec for fuel and USA fuel does not meet the wear spec. So the problem is that manufactures of vehicles made and imported into the us knowing used a pump that needs a fuel standard that is in limited existence in the us. I say limited becuase fuel that is bio added at the pump at b2.5 or greater does meet the Bosh wear spec. Also, the additives you indicate are not the leading additives used…lab test show opti- lube xl has the highest lube value .

All These Recalls & Service Bullitins, probably going hurt truck Sales!!!

I'm glad gm stopped using the cp4 pump back in 2016. Why are manufacturers still using cp4 with the known issue? Friends don't let friends drive dodge

It’s the bosch cp4, a lot of Volkswagen, Audi, bmw and Mercedes get the same failure in the last year, broken pump and everything related to where the Diesel could be passed ha to be changed. 4000-7000€ of repairs everytime.

99% of the issue in the US is the lack of lubrication in our diesel fuel. If you look at European trucks with the cp4, they have a small failure rate compared to the US vehicles. Run a good fuel additive that lubricates the fuel system.

All new duramaxs including the 3.0 is the denso fyi denso is Toyota quality is much better then Bosch

I will not buy a new diesel truck. With all of the emissions issues and the price. I drive a gas truck and I'm not into towing huge rvs. My trailer is well within it's capabilities so no thank you to diesel trucks. Most diesel vehicle owners never or rarely use the power that the vehicle can produce. Most are daily drivers that might haul or tow a heavy load 1% of the time if that. At $10k to $20k. It is a very expensive keeping up with the Jones thing.

Isn't there a fuel filter in line after the fuel pump? To catch the metal shavings. Maybe Diesel is different, and I am diesel ignorant, I admit. But Gas engines, 99.9% has filter after the pump.

The pump creates the high fuel pressure needed for direct injected engines like diesels (several thousand psi). Filtering is done before it gets there.

Fuel entering, the CP 4 is filtered prior to entering the cam lobe area of the pump, which is where the metal is created, then the metal contaminated fuel from there goes to the pressurization chamber, which now has metal in it, and then gets compressed to high pressures, and sent to the injectors and everywhere throughout the fuel system

What’s going on over there in Germany. There quality is dropping, did they farm this out to China??? Maybe the’ll come up with a $20 per fill up additive. 😮

VW, Audi, and porsche 3.0 tdi also use the cp4.

Bosch has Jobs' reality distortion field going. There's a ton of issues with their equipment and practices and yet they are never called out on it, just the "manufacturer." It's weird.

Well, if it's a lubricity problem with American fuel, I could understand. Bosch is a German company that manufacturers parts. They don't know where in the world the parts will end up. The vehicle manufacturers on the other hand do know where the vehicle is sold so probably deserve the brunt of responsibility. Unless, of course, Bosch claimed compatibility with all types of fuel.

@@wilmarbarrick3194 the Bosch cp3 has been rock solid for nearly 20 years. With strict performance and emissions requirements, I would expect a specific pump built for the US market and Ram/Cummins application, but I could be wrong. I’m more than a little surprised that (1) Cummins/Ram spec’d the cp4 knowing the issues ford & gm have had in prior years. And (2) how many apparent cp4 failures cropped up in the ram/cummins application so fast.

The pumps have certain specs. It is the OEMs responsibility to make sure they work in their market and their vehicles. If the pump was not designed for that fuel you shouldn’t use it.

@@jeffs2809 not sure to be honest. It's my understanding that this pump is used globally in automotive, industrial, and agricultural applications so, to me, the engine and vehicle manufacturer would have a better grasp of how it's being used.

“Lubricity seems to be the issue”? I’m tired of generalized statements without more specific details. What factors affect lubricity? Should the focus be on the refiner, the government, the handler, or the user? Do we have standards for diesel fuel from refiner in the USA? Is there a definitive comparison of EU, Canada, and USA diesel fuels? Problem is other factors can affect lubricity.. water, def in fuel, running low on fuel, not changing fuel filters often enough. Ford Superduty 6.7s do not have room to retrofit a CP3 pump. S&S pump looks promising.

yet another defect that should put the lie about diesel engines to bed!

All you guppies talking about Cp3 conversion are not going to like the 3 MPG hit to your fuel consumption. 2015 LML duramax went from CP4.2 to CP3 conversion went from 25 MPG on highway atv70 mp/h down to 21 MPG.

US diesel fuel is the worst lubricious quality in the world. Some blame must lie on fuel companies and Federal Standards

The pumps were manufactured with the intent to be sold in the USA & used with standard USA diesel fuels. The manufacturer should’ve built them to handle that type of fuel. The Bosch built cp3 has been rock solid for nearly 20 years, so they can do it.

Thats not how it works. The 3 manufactures know the quality of the fuel. Its their responsibility to design parts that will work with the fuel that they get.

Very informative, I have a 15 powerstroke and have added fuel treatment at every fill up ,I hope it helped I have 150k on the motor and runs perfect now😂🫰🫰
