BULLETPROOFING A CP4 FUEL PUMP?!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

CP4 Pump? This High Pressure Fuel Pump is found in your 2011-2014 Ford Powerstroke and 2011-2016 LML Duramax. These pump have been known to fail for a number of facts and assumptions. One fact as we discuss on the channel is our customer truck died, would not start and was towed to the shop. After pulling the Fass Filters and finding metal in the filters we went to the VCV on top of the CP4 pump. As shown metal was minimum "this pump had not yet failed." But one problem existed metal was in the entire low and high pressure fuel system. Watch to see our approach towards this issue and our solution to this problem.

There are technically two types of CP4 pumps, the CP4.1 and CP4.2. The main difference between them is the number of pumping elements. A CP4.1 has a single element and is typically used on smaller diesel engines, whereas the CP4.2 has two elements.

Upgraded to a cp4.2... had to chuckle at that one. the ".2" only indicates it is a 2 cylinder pump. cp4.1 is a single cylinder you'll find in smaller displacement engines with lower fuel consumption. you're just replacing a cp4.2 with another. at best the "upgrade" is the additional of a tappet anti-rotation pin, or some other miniscule bandaid

I'll add another tip, when changing fuel filter(s) do not skip the step to force the liftpump to run purging air from the newly installed filter(s). Even a momentary loss of fuel feed can initiate damage to the CP4. The CP3, obviously, is more tolerant of momentary loss of fuel and I believe that a number of CP4 failures are due to owners or service personnel not being familiar with the fragility of the CP4.

Your cleaning and filtering everything going to the pump 4 times yet the pump still has every chance of failing due to the fact its still a cp4 modified cp4.2 pump. It could still fail and take everything out once again! Wouldn’t it be best to dump the Cp4.2 and put in a cp3 conversion to make it “bulletproof”! I’m not a mechanic just observing cause I’m trying to fix the same shit I got on my truck right now. Help us all understand wtf Ford Chevy and Dodge would still use this shit on anything up and coming. I do like the cleanliness of your install but I’m looking for a system that truly would be fail safe as we all know there’s no such thing as “ bulletproof”.

So until a couple things one a Cp4 does not have guides for the roller lifters , second they have roller lifters a solid tapper would be more robust. Filtering is one thing we stress but removing the air with 2 pumps does it’s part in helping the Cp4 stay alive by not having air aided fuel that can cause a lifter you spin or Turn in the bore also lack of lubrication continuous ! EPA / emission is the reason for the Cp4 or any new pump because the higher injection pressure means cleaner burn. 29k or 30k Or pressure makes a much cleaner burn then 25k ! Ram and Cummins should be responsible for replacing and upgrading all 2019 and 2020 models back to a CP3 pump, like they have already done for the 2021 models! Ram And Cummins Really!

The lifters , plungers and cam were not damaged by visual appearance. So my opinion is this say the pump is good , fuel pressure is regulated by the FPR if metal got to then the bypass failed. Again this is possibilities , another “ if “ is if metal reached the fuel injector and the Pintle reached metal during on time it would cause low or no rail pressure. So the kit would have failed. There are two types of kit I am aware of to save the fuel rail and injectors should the pump fail. One is a fuel metering valve with a greatly improved filter on it, made by Exergy for $240. The other is a fuel reroute kit that sends all fuel that went through the pump that could be contaminated with shrapnel back to the the tank and only uncontaminated fuel to the rail and injectors, this is the "Disaster prevention kit" others have asked about below, they are about $350. Both are pretty easy installs.

@@POINTBLANKPERFORMANCE I would advocate for a filter in the return line to the tank as well to save all those repairs, I thought that was part of the set up in your video actually. In the event of catastrophic failure the only thing that needs to be replaced is the fuel pump and filters. With a modification to save the high pressure side and another to save the lower pressure side, yes I would rather take a chance on paying you to fix it twice rather than the enormous cost of replacing the entire fuel system straight away. That would be my idea of bulletproofing a system using a CP4 pump, not really bullet proofing the pump itself but stopping all the collateral damage.

The CP4 is a shit piece of engineering. Each of those pressure plungers are roller equipped at the cam interface ....think roller cam. They are NOT keyed in any way to keep the whole unit from rotating in the bores. Once that happens nothing is "rolling" and metal starts being made with the roller 90° to the cam face. The roller attachment to the piston is nothing to write home about, either. Unless or until the pistons are designed to be non-rotable....oval, triangular, whatever....the possibility of roller/piston/cam misalignment is always present. I've seen several with the roller reduced to a huge flat spot on the cam facing side.
