No, they don't. He understands all about complex music theory and all the possible chord progressions (not just regular diatonic chord progressions in one key). Plus interesting scales to put over them. You'll want to first head to Music theory dot net and complete all the intervals training and chord training exercises until you get good at them and know them quickly by ear. Also memorize the sound of the major scale, minor pentatonic, major and minor blues scales, natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor. Learn how to play each of these on your instrument of choice. This covers most of what would be considered "basic" music theory, and gives you a strong foundation. Once you can identify all the basic intervals and the most common chords/scales by ear, then learn some basic chord progressions such as I IV V, and ii V I. I mean just regular diatonic in-key chord progressions. Best way to do this is take some (simple) songs you like, learn them by ear, and do a roman numeral analysis on them and write them out. Another way is to look at KZread videos for basic chord progressions. Build up your arsenal of regular basic diatonic chord progressions, and start to keep a library of them and write them out. It's not key that you memorize all of these by ear, the idea here is just to get your feet wet with transposing basic diatonic (means in one key) songs and chord progressions by ear. Now at this step, learn all the modes of the major scale. Memorize the sound of each mode and be able to sing it, and play it on your instrument. Branch your scalar knowledge out into modes. Then learn jazz chords, memorize the sound of each, and again apply them to these basic chord progressions. Branch your chordal knowledge out into jazz chords and sus chords. Now is where it starts to get interesting and sound complex, and you get crazy chord progressions like Ichika. You need to learn the following concepts: Secondary dominants, passing chords (large topic as there are many choices), neopolitan and german chords, augmented chords and.scsle, diminished chord and scale, tritone substitutions, modulations (another large topic), modal mixtures and modal interchange, backdoor progression, omnibus progression, altered chords. These are some of the more advamced music theory concepts you'll need to learn how to hear if you want to be able to improvise songs like he does. THEN finally you need to be able to apply them to your instrument, and improvise with this new arsenal of music ideas that you have memorized. Now take experimental approach (AKA noodling). I mean, you should always be noodling and practicing your instrument during all of the above, but by this point you should hopefully be able to use these music theory ideas to craft short progressions or riffs. Record your riffs and licks and write them out when you stumble upon a good one. You WILL forget them, so don't be lazy, and write them out. Also, continue to be curious about new interestinf progressions that you hear in a song, and write them out as well (be a thoughtful listener). This all sounds daunting, trust me I was.the same way. But I assure you if you spend a diligent 45 minutes on it per day, you can become very proficient at music theory and understand all the above concepts in probably 9 months time. There is no such thing as a good ear, as long as you can tell the difference in pitch between two notes, that's good enough. It's just a ton of experimentation and studying, plus learning how to apply them to your instrument of choice If you take nothing else from this post, then just remember this tip -- When you stumble across a cool chord progression or lick that you enjoy, write it out. Tabs or chords diagram, whatever (just write it out in a way that makes sense to you). Start young and do this consistently over the years. Keep that idea journal with you, and don't lose it. Continue to add to it. This tip alone is almost just as valuable as learning all the music theory, as you will simply learn a lot of the most practical and common chord progressions, and common licks or scalar ideas this way. Follow my advice and you will be able to craft novel chord progressions pretty easily. Writing genius music is another task altogether, but this gives you all the tools to do so. Every possible note choice will have a chord you know you can play for it (regardless of whether that note was in the original scale or not).
