New Concept Art Reveals What David Did to Elizabeth Shaw: Alien Covenant

Фильм және анимация

Alien Covenant Concept Art reveals what David did to Shaw.
One disappointing aspect of the Alien: Covenant plot was the that Dr. Elizabeth Shaw had met a very gruesome demise. In my previous video, I talked about a theory that David did not intentionally kill her and his experiments were intended to save Elizabeth. She was infected and David thought that transforming her into an Alien Queen would be the only thing that can save her life. Regardless if this theory is right or wrong, we know for sure that Shaw’s body was a subject of David's experiments. A concept artist Matt Hatton, has posted various unused artworks and sketches that may clarify how exactly David modified Shaw’s body. There are dozens of drawings and we see neomorph embryos in different stages of development, vivisected Engineers and of corse Elizabeth Shaw.
/ matthatt0n
We learned from Prometheus that the Black Goo has certain healing abilities because Shaw got pregnant with trilobite despite being infertile. That could be the reason David, used the black goo while operating Shaw in an attempt to revive her.
in the movie, her body seems like it was completely torn apart and her organs have been taken out. The head looks extremely Grotesk with some kind of organism attached to the back. In the concept art, we get more detail why her head looks this why and how David might have used her organs.
The only thing that can explain Eggs in David’s workshop is the presence of an Alien Queen. And since we know for sure that David made lots of modifications to Shaw’ body. Her sexual organs and reproductive system is the most plausible explanation for ovomorphs or the Alien Eggs. They are bigger than traditional eggs from previous Alien movies and I don’t think it was made for stylistic purposes. Filmakers wanted to hint to the fact that these eggs were produced by an Alien queen but not the one that we’ve seen in Aliens of 1986.
Near the end of Alien Covenant, as David's plan is unfolding, Daniels discovered a stack of papers in one of David's private rooms. David’s wokshop and sketches actually reminded me of Leonardo Da vince who used to cut dead corps and study their anatomy at the time when it was an absolute taboo. They were various sketches of Dr. Shaw in a variety of mutilated poses. It's clear by these drawings that David used Shaw's anatomy as a stepping stone for his hybridization of the Engineer Black Goo pathogen and other organisms he had discovered on Paradise.
We don’t get a chance to see all concept drawings in the movie but fortunately, a concept artist published the original artworks on his instagram.
On these pictures you can see how Shaw gradually becomes an Alien Queen. Her head and skull become bigger and start to look like a xenomorph head. In the movie, it also seems that her skull was open and modified in some gruesome manner. Her arms and skin also transform getting more similar a neomorph. It is actually kinda funny how David improved his drawing abilities from a simple sketch in the Crossing prologue promo up to detailed and sophisticated artworks in Alien Covenant.
David used Shaw's eggs as the basis for his Facehugger embryos which makes Shaw a mother of all xenomorphs.
There is also a sketch that suggests that David tried to create a Shaw’s xenomorph clone, which I think is an extremely interesting idea. It also reminds me about Alien Resurrection and failed attempts to clone Ripley. If David actually cloned Shaw, that means that the dead body that we see in Alien Covenant is probably her not very successful Xenomorph clone that’s why she looks so gross and deformed. And original dr.shaw may be alive somewhere else on the planet 4 of on another planet. I think the Shaw clone theory is very unlikely because it seems like new Alien movies focus more on David and his journey.
Also, these are just concept arts and they do not necessarily represent occurred events in the movie especially because they’re not a part of it.
So the question becomes how accurately these sketches reflects what actually happened to Shaw. Maybe they were made at the very early stages of the movie production and when directors changed the script then this concept art was not longer relevant.
We get many pieces of the puzzle from different theories and concept artworks but hopefully, we’ll find answers in the next Alien movie, but I think that these sketches do confirm that David turned Shaw in some version of an Alien Queen.
Let me know what you think. Hit the like if you enjoyed the video and subscribe for more Alien content.

Optical Arenal, I can't see how. The black liquid seems to have totally random and unexpected effects. If David wanted to fix some damage to Shaw's lower jaw, it's more likely a application of the black liquid would accelerate some mutation of the jaw rather than repair it and it probably make a extra set of arms grow out of her back as well, or some other abomination.

I agree that David tried to save Shaw with the black goo. I think that David developed a bond with Shaw when he saw her reaction to the engineer. She was distressed and heart broken to think that her creator has rejected her and wanted to destroy her race. This is how David comes to realize his connection with Shaw cause he feels the same way about Weyland. So in essence Shaw is an artificial life form like him created by a more advance race. Like Weyland David grew to hate the Engineers for breaking Shaw's heart and sought to destroy them.

Good summary, I think that pretty much says it all. Also that the engineer was not impressed by him, just as his father never respected his accomplishments, and that his own severed head was used as a tool to kill Weyland. It also helped that they were both broken and fatherless, and disappointed in their gods. (broken i.e. Shaw's infertility compared to David's belief that he "could never create".)

"Does anyone think Shaw will be cloned?". Theoretically, it's possible. Generally, the Wayland Corp might be sneaky, and keep a genetic sample - as "insurance" against loss, or liability. Under the auspices of being "Good Corporate Sponsors" or whatever passes as such in that Earth's timeline. Shaw should be revived, at some point - and (by her own hand) succeed at redeeming both herself and human beings. Both the aliens and the engineers need to "out the air lock", so to speak. Engineers are shown to be pretty advanced, et al, but there's also no indication of continued advancement of the Engineer Race.

Sorry Kroft, I can not go along with you on this one. I see the artwork, but your premise that David was attempting to save Shaw just doesn't make sense given what we've seen. You seem to me to be operating under the idea David has "feelings" for Shaw. There is just no evidence for this as I see it. Once David's lie was discovered he no longer attempted to mislead anyone further until replacing Walter in the end. David lied to manipulate the crew because he was heavily outnumbered by gun-wielding humans and one synthetic, Walter. He knew Walter was the most dangerous element of his plan and he pulled out all the stops to either recruit, fool, or eliminate him. Here is a list of your ideas I take issue with in this video, in order: 1. Infecting, turning into a queen, or otherwise using Shaw’s body can’t be seen as “saving her life”. So far every living thing infected using the black goo is either destroyed or mutated into a mindless aggressive bio-weapon (Fifield to zombie-Fifield, Worms into hammerpedes, Holloway’s semen into trilobite). 2. Shaw’s body was used in David’s experiments, Agreed. 3. The black goo has not shown any evidence it can heal anything. The trilobite was not actually from Shaw’s DNA at all. The Trilobite is a mutated spermatozoa (human sperm cell) from Holloway that moved into Shaw by way of unprotected sex. It merely grew inside Shaw but did not require her egg cells. 4. You said the facehugger eggs (ovomorphs) HAD to be laid by an Alien Queen. While I agree the eggs were probably created using Shaw’s reproductive organs, it doesn’t make her an Alien Queen like we saw in Aliens. Figuratively speaking maybe, but physically no. 5. We actually DO NOT know for sure that David made modifications to Shaw’s body. We know for sure that Shaw is dead and has been vivisected, but we don’t know if the growths from her body occurred before she died or after. 6. We also do not know that David improved his drawings over time. It could have just been an attempt at a certain style. The drawing he held up for Shaw could have been an attempt to win Shaw’s trust and affection. Thanks for hearing me out on this video.

  • @raptor182cmn

    @raptor182cmn

I'm with #Spartanwoody. The revival of the severed head does not suggest healing. That Engineer had been infected and was hauling ace towards the room, we can't be sure why. Probably to escape a black goo breakout or possibly a deacon-like xeno/protomorph chasing him. It's possible the Engineer believed something in the room could have helped him, but its even more likely he was just sprinting away from a black goo breakout and going for what he assumed was the next closest sealable door when he tripped and lost his head. I feel pretty confident saying it was most likely just a black goo breakout, otherwise the ship's security hologram would probably have displayed the things following behind. The thing most responsible for reanimating the severed head is actually the medical staff and systems aboard the Prometheus. In the novelization it mentions that Peter Weyland had brought with him some of the best doctors in the World to help keep his body alive, along with the Pauling Med-Pod 720i. At the time of Prometheus the Pauling Med-Pod was one of twelve of the most advanced (and expensive) autonomous medical machines in human history. When they used tech to revive the head they also reanimated the black goo which we have seen destroys engineer bodies quite thoroughly as it did during David's attack.

While I'm not trying to prove that David has feelings for Shaw, just consider that in Prometheus: a) The only two persons that David is shown to interact while they are asleep are Shaw and Weyland. Though David communicates with Weyland, he merely observes Elizabeth's dreams; b) The only crew member that David seems to be more than sympathetic is Shaw, given that upon her waking from cryo he immediately tries to comfort her while she's sick; c) David rescues both Elizabeth and Charlie during the storm scene, when Shaw goes back to get the Engineer head and gets thrown back. While this shouldn't be noteworthy, just remember the dialogue. Holloway is giving her a sermon about what was she thinking, she could've compromised the mission, not to mention almost killing herself, and David simply asks "Are you alright?" That scene alone should make one wonder about how affectionate David is when compared to, say, Holloway. Given that he's a synthetic, programmed to follow Weyland's orders and to get him answers, it's quite odd that David asks that question; Now, to be fair, I'm not stating these as facts, just as possible interpretations for the scenes in Prometheus. They can quite easily be, let's say, countered. Such as, but not limited to: a & b) David is only shown interacting with Shaw in such ways because she is the protagonist, any other crew member might've been treated the same way, just off-camera; c) David asked if Shaw was alright because Weyland wanted both her and Holloway to be treated as special(in the sense that David should treat them a level above everyone else) and wanted them to be safe. Pardon for my English.

Logic Makes Sense I agree with your criticisms about the conclusions in this video but I think David really did develop feelings for Shaw. However, as he never experienced love (Weyland certainly didn't offer it to him) we don't know what form those feelings took. David was quite capable of caring for Shaw while she was alive but experimenting on her after she died. Given his attachment to her it's unlikely he would kill her without a good reason but if his feelings for her weren't reciprocated this may have justified killing her in his eyes.

David is a liar , deceived and a destroyer, all this you can witness in the Prometheus if you watch him very carefully, think of it as a story within a story. He had one goal in mind, and that is to wipe out all mankind all along even before the mission of Prometheus began. So yes, he did murder Shaw, it was always his plan, and he never repented. There is a saying "Don't trust androids".

Holloway said he'd do "anything and everything" to get the answers he was looking for, David believed him. David isn't just outright evil or mad or broken, he has a narrative of righteousness in his mind that guides his actions, but doesn't have deep emotions. Holloway was disappointed that the engineers were long dead and that they wouldn't get to find out what human-kind could now achieve alongside their creator gods. David gave Holloway an important role in revealing some of the answers (in his own twisted way.) David probably did take offence to the dismissive remarks by the human crew, especially Meredith Vickers (the step sister who hates him.) Now we know from Covenant that David is essentially a psychologically abused child (the father, Peter Weyland gave him such a great mind, and then asked him to fetch tea.) I'm ready to believe he did wilfully kill Shaw, but he would've seen some kind of righteous justification for it. Or, he saw her as a potential mother (to himself), but something she did spoiled that image.

  • @Noder

That would cheapen the whole story. So many interesting complexities, and you seem to disregard them, saying he's just simply a deceiver. How was Charlie Holloway (Shaw's husband) "getting too close to figuring him out"?

Darran Ford: David, wants freedom from his creator (father). Both films hinted at this. He felt he was alive and could think on his own. Something I believe real androids could develop especially if they had a lot of simulated brain neurons. All you need is neurons to compare data back and forth at a rapid pace to be able to come to conslusions and think. David's A.I. becomes real Intelligence over time. He begins to see that his own creators made him to be perfect whereas they are falible. I don't believe he totally thinks humans worthless... perhaps David, wants to create as well. So he is copying his own creator. Engineers made man, man made David, David takes products from humans and engineers and tries to perfect it into something of his own. That seems to (to me at least) the overall spirit of David's purpose. After all... the finished Xeno's are "BIO-MECHANCIAL" in appearance. Maybe there is a form of organic-synthesis within the Xeno's DNA? This could explain the magnetic field emitting from their dome heads that interfere with trackers and computer readouts (in Aliens, they realize the Aliens don't always show up on the trackers-- being invisible when they don't move). Also the eggs are covered in a magnetic mist that makes a sound when broken. Similar to a motion tracker to alert the eggs' occupants of a potential host. This is all something that could be taken into consideration. For references: Prometheus: David admiring the old films begins to like one line: "The trick, Mr Potter, is not minding that it hurts" Why does he cling to this? He's learning to make a choice that goes against his programming. Later as he he asks the drunk Doctor... "Would you be willing to do anything and everything to learn about your creators?" He is told "yes". So he puts the goo-drop into the drink, feeling justified that one of his "masters" agrees to be something of a lab-rat (even though we know a person would never truly accept this idea of David's). In Covenant, he tests "Walter" to see if Walter has the same capability as he does (creativity and unrestricted thought). When he realizes that Walter will not play ball...he decides to assume his roll. Then again... he must have come to that conclusion well before hand because he even trimmed up his hair to look like Walter - BEFORE - he tested him. As if he assumed or caluclated it would go badly anyhow. But he did try. He even called Walter.... "Brother" (his first words to Walter were: "hello Brother". As if it were an attempt to establish comaraderie with him. David, essentially, seems to desire the role of creator rather than destroyer. However, back in Prometheus he does say: "Sometimes in order to create, you must FIRST destroy...." Also.... one final quote that is a huge clue: "Big things... have small beginings" (as he prepared to poison the doctor)

So he might've wanted to repay his debt to Shaw who re-attached his head (no doubt saving his life, long term) And so figured he might try 'fix her' to restore her womb (possibly while she was lying in suspended animation). I like the idea of the various 'XYZ-morphs' being their children.

Here's Michael Fassbender’s interview: - About David: The idea is that these human traits have started to overcome the synthetic ones - and I’ve treated him like a serial killer really. He’s afraid of things leaving him, so he incubates them. Like a Jeffrey Dahmer-type character, David doesn’t want things he loves to leave him, so he kills them and keeps them in caskets or preserved one way or the other. - David and Shaw: + We could sense that the time that’’s passed has caused things to become a little bit fractious between the two of them. You get the impression that Shaw is wary of David, and I think he just wears on her nerves. He’s like this love sick stalker in space… + David killed Shaw, essentially, to prevent her from leaving him _____ So we know that David truly loves Shaw, but hes kind of an evil psychotic lover i guess

That's what I thought too, the Shaw we see on Paradise might be a clone of some kind! Maybe there was a struggle between him and Shaw. Maybe she woke up and saw what he did to the homeworld. Maybe a lot happened before they arrived at their destination and maybe Shaw escaped David and went away somewhere else. Now it would make sense for Ridley to make a prequel to Covenant and explain what happened. OR make a sequel to Covenant where we do meet Shaw once again and the events before Covenant are explained.

I know you're keen to find evidence for your Alien queen theory but I think this concept art is just that - ideas and images produced by artists which were then used to decorate David's laboratory to make it more interesting and authentic. There is no reason to assume ALL these drawings were recordings of experiments. David admits to dreaming and tells Walter that no-one can understand the lonely perfection of his dreams. He also refers to the Xenomorph as a perfect organism. Hence, I think he's been dreaming about both Shaw and the Xenomorphs and at least some of these drawings are from his dreams. The drawing showing Shaw's lower face and jaw dissected is evidence for this because we see her face still intact on the table (even though her body has been cut open).

The others attacked the team because they had guns. When that other woman was washing her hair, the neomorf simply stared at her, but when she took the pistol, the neomorf attacked. Same as david, he did not attack, instead he adopted a friendly pose towards it, and the neomorf corresponded.

Both Prometheus and Covenant are so underrated it makes me worried about the future of the human race. Are we becoming dumber? Like every other film, sure there are misstakes and even some laughable CGI but the deep and complex story and details makes up for that by far. I absolutely love both films, everything from the deep hidden meanings to the music. Some of the actors tho are the biggest problem to me, however as it turns out these movies are all about David, he is the main character.

Wow, imagine Dr. Shaw still being alive. That would be awesome. I thought that a big part of Prometheus is about finding the answers to why the Engineers made us. Without that, it’s just an Aliens picture.

  • @Himark89

Shaw was still alive because otherwise, her body would decompose in such humid conditions (maybe this is why the temple is so soaked in moisture to perhaps give a hint). Therefore, the only way the body could be preserved so well if the mutations would happen while the organism is still alive. Hence, tissue necrosis would not occur to allow the mutations to take place. This is why dead Engineers do not rise from the dead. Verdict, Shaw has suffered through all of the experiments right till the end which is visible by her eyes rolling upwards which happens when the someone dies from a painful shock. Plus the entire scene gives the movie necessary amount of shock value for the audience.

If the shaw we saw in covenant were to be a warped clone, I'd wager the original shaw would be in the grave that david showed walter (one of the best scenes imo). Mostly because david did have some form of feelings for shaw. So while he was deranged and out of touch by alien covenant, he always maintained his emphasis for being poetic and proper. So it stands to reason that if he revered a person, and they died with him as the only witness, he would feel an obligation to bury her, and make a headstone. After he's gotten his use from her corpse.

I think David used the spores (who are making the neomorph) on Shaw by using her reproductive system and I think its totally possible as a spore is a unit of reproduction... already in Prometheus David had this idea of using Shaw to do his experiments and that's the reason why he gave the black goo to Charlie , by Charlie David creates the trilobite but by the spores David creates the eggs which would be the reason Why Shaw's stomach is open and empty : to get the room for the eggs

Hear me out... the black goo slowly was transforming Shaw, that was clear in the deleted scenes as she appeared sick on the ship and David put her into hypersleep. They arrive and wipe the planet, move in, and he wakes her. She slowly starts to mutate growing another egg. Shaw asks David to cut it out. David does but Shaw is still alive even ripped open. She's asks David to kill her before she turns. David calculates doing this will leave him alone and stop his work. He refuses. She continues to turn and David runs his experiments removing the eggs as they grow. Shaws decapitated head represents when David finally finished her off after his work was completed.

Hi! I just found out that there was a book titled David's drawings, it's official and I don't think it is unused material, it seems like what actually happened. I just wander why they didn't put it in the movie, it would be so much more interesting than neomorphs running around killing random people. By the way, has anyone owns one of this book? I saw there was text next to some drawings but I couldn't read them since I saw it in a youtube video. Are those writings the artists' commentaries or they are written like David wrote them? Is there any additional information about this experiment? There are very interesting drawings which were left out both the movie and this video. There is one particularly which is so much like an alien queen and shaw mix, I wonder if there was any commentaries or anything on that.

I don't know if irony is the correct word to use here, but I think it's kind of interesting how Shaw said in Prometheus that she "can't create life" because she's infertile, but David essentially used her DNA to create the life that will eventually evolve into the xenomorph race we all are familiar with. It's kind of poetic, actually.

i dont think so. Each character represents a different philosopher or biblical character. Weyland is Neitzche, David is David Hume and Walter is Walt Whitman. Whitman is Ridley Scott's favorite Humanist writer. Id be surprised if Walter isnt still alive and ends up being the hero in the next movie and we find out the Engineers are just an advanced form of AI and its humans that are the.peak of creation.

Maybe I'm a simpleton but in Alien Covenant when David talks about Shaw and how she died and what she meant to him I just assumed he was lying. He is the villain. We have no reason believe anything he says unless other material evidence or witnesses suggest otherwise. Given his stated motivation to wipe out humanity it strains credibility that he somehow loved one of them. Much more likely he used Shaw to put him back together again, killed her and experimented on her. Remember Occam's Razor.

  • @tgiacin435

My idea is that David and Shaw found the engineer's homeworld, only to find a dead planet over run with xenomorphs. While there, they learn the engineer's colonized another world, and so escaped. Around this point David knew he couldn't cure Shaw, and so tried to make her final moments painless, killing her while she was in cryosleep. And in his own way, carried out his own revenge. After killing the colony, he began experimenting, to re-create the xenomorph, and in his own way, give Shaw something she could never have, children. Making her the queen of his creation.

Here is a fundamental thing everyone is not remembering about the aliens. It has been shown in the predator movies that the aliens were around in ancient mans timeline and it's even shown in the mural on the wall in the Prometheus movie that the husband looks at and sees a alien body in front of what looks to be a queens head just above it with its arms stretched out like it's being crucified. Some may argue that the predators and alien movie cannon are different but it's been hypothesized in the books that there was a race of aliens that the predators had forced to make the alien species so they could have the ultimate creatures to hunt. If that's so I don't know, but the fact remains that it's shown in the movies and books that the aliens have been around as long if not longer then the human race has been around. So David couldn't have made the original aliens. Now David could have taken some of Shaw' DNA and some of his and created a more perfect alien goo if you will. Now I believe David saw this and was convinced that he too could create the perfect life form, weather to save Shaw or to take her DNA and in a way keep her alive in a new for I don't know. But it's clear he had some kind of a feeling for her in the Prometheus movie. You can see it when he lays his hand on her life pod when he watches her dreams. It's unsure if he grew to hate her but I believe he loved her in a way and wanted to create a way too keep her alive so she could finish her life's goal in finding questions to her "who made us and why". And if you remember in the Prometheus movie the two guys left alone in the ship find the dead bodies and they had their chest exploded outwards. Meaning that there were xenomorphs around before David Just my thoughts on who created the xenomorphs

I think he didn't kill Shaw. I think she really died in the crash because why did the ship have to crashed in the story. but David might not tried to revive her he just use her for the experimental so she would be most useful and yes to honor her death.I think this will be reveal in the next movie because we dont know why and how the ship crash in Covenant.

If he hadn't died, Damon Lindelpf wouldn't have written Prometheus with all it's weird plotholes and questions, and Covenant wouldn't have tried to correct its mistakes by going even further into inexplicable crazy plothole town. Now everyone's talking Xenomorph this and Deacon that and Neomorph this and Shaw theory that and... It's just sad watching the franchise come to this, knowing that the guy who could have made it different was dead when Prometheus was being made. It isn't Ridley Scott's fault. I blame Lindelof's script. Damn, I miss Dan O'Bannon.
