New Concept Art Reveals What Engineer City Should Have Looked Like Alien Covenant

Фильм және анимация

Engineer City We Never Got to See in Alien Covenant.
I wanna talk about the early versions of the Alien Covenant Script with more scenes about the Engineer city and their technology.
I’m pretty sure most of us were expecting to learn more about the Engineer culture in Alien Covenant, but unfortunately it did not happen. We only got a couple of minutes of action involving engineers and it turned out that these were not even the actual Engineers but another humanoid race.
I recently discovered storyboards from early version and new concept art that explain the original Engineer city that we did not have a chance to see in Alien Covenant. In fact, the creator of the xenomorph design Giger also designed the Engineer city that was supposed to appear in Alien Covenant as the Engineer homeworld. But Ridley Scott decided to not use Giger works and I’m gonna explain why. The script and artworks also have information about how Engineers produced and used electricity which is slightly different from technologies of Earth.
In the early draft of the script, the Covenant crew spent more time exploring the Engineer city after their visit to the Temple. David would show them the streets and Engineer technology that was somewhat advanced but different from what we have on Earth. Even in the movie, we see a lamp created on the Planet 4 that detects movements and produces light. As David says they were highly advanced in their own way, but at the same time limited in certain aspects which is evidenced by ancient looking type city.
The script specifies that the architecture of buildings is very Giger with twisted combination of bio mechanical elements just like we see in the design of Juggernauts in Prometheus and the original Alien movie. In Alien Covenant however, the city has a Roman like style and people are dressed in robes pretty much like pesants. There is an explanation on why they decided to go with the Roman architecture instead of traditional Giger Engineer design. I think Ridley Scott changed the style because original he thought that the Planet 4 would be the actualy Enginner homeworld with the same Engineer race that we saw in promethes. But then we changed his mind and decided that instead the Planet 4 would be another humanoid race created by Engineers. So I think for this reason, he put aside Giger's desings of the city to use them in Alien Awakening of another Alien movie when David would reach the true Engineer homeworld. If that’s true, we’ll probably se these designs on the big screen in the future.
It was also kinda weird that in the film nobody asked David about the city and the Engineers. Everybody just ignored that they just found another advanced humanoid civilization. The covenant expedition is sent 10 years after Prometheus, therefore no intelligent extraterrestrial life has been found so far. But nobody is surprised by what they see and they don’t express any interest which I think was not very realistic. One may argue that they were by what just happened to them but even in the Temple nobody asks David about the city and its inhabitants.
In the early draft however David is asked if Engineers had electricity, David says they did but for some reason the binary logic never occurred to them, therefore they did not have transistors which is a very basic element of every technology that we have today on Earth. It briefly stated in the script that they used solar panels to produce electricity but I think it would be pretty difficult because of the frequent storms and rain on the Planet.
There is also a sequence where David shows the Orrery and then the crew goes inside. It was supposed to be a similar scene to the one in Prometheus when David activated the 3d hologram of the star and planet, which eventualy zooms in to the Solar system. In the Orrery, there was also an aragment of stars and planets but in a physical form.
It was a huge dissapointment for many people that we did not get a chance to explore the Engineers and the city. I personaly wanted to find out where the Engineers came and what was their civilazation.

If I’m honest the space Jockey in ALIEN is the most fascinating thing I’ve seen in an Alien franchise, I couldn’t believe they swept it under a rug so long, so imagine how ecstatic I was with Prometheus & disappointed with covenant. Finally I thought we going to find what that big elephant looking thing was/is ! A part of me hopes the Space Jockey are aliens that engineered the engineers & both are separate races.

Exactly. Alien was a great sci-fi horror movie but the most interesting part of that movie was the discovery of the Juggernaut, the Space Jockey/Engineer, the eggs and the temple that was supposed to be in the move but was taken out. The Xenomorph was scary as hell but come on, the most wonderous part of the movie was exploring the alien ship! Space Jockey/Engineers were always the most interesting part since the first movie!

I think the Xenomorph fans ruined the Prometheus series. Fox studios should have went ahead with Neill Blomkamp's action reboot of Aliens staring Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn to satisfy the Xenomorph fans as if Alien 3 never existed. While Ridley Scott does movies that deals with the origins of the Engineers/Space Jockey and why they want to destroy humanity. Unlike other Xenomorph fans, I actually liked Prometheus and I was interested in learning about the Space Jokey's people. Ridley Scott based the Space Jockey on Erich von Däniken's ancient astronaut theory. There's already enough Xenomorph movies already.

It’s what I’ve always been saying. The race that David exterminated was one of the Engineers’ favored child races. They seemed to rejoice at the return of their “gods”. The great plaza technology that receives the Juggernaut is clearly more advanced different than the rest, and it looks more Gigeresque. The effortlessnessly hovering docking station is the best example.

"there is no one specific way the civilization has to develop" While this might be true from philosophical point of view, in practice it is not as long as we're talking about a humanoid civilization living on a solid planet. Sure you can use acid to produce electricity, but no civilization will go down that path when a turbine or solar cell can do it millions of times faster. Of course you can make turbines in a shape of a box, but why would you do that when a cylinder is much more efficient? So while there are many ways to produce electricity, all civilizations will chose the efficient ones, unless limited in some way or for some reason.

Prometheus is a brilliant movie. I do like Covenant though, much more than I expected it. I agree on Kroft's remark, Ridley went with the xenomorph this time, concentrating that more than the Engineers, but then the movie been called Alien: Covenant instead Prometheus: Paradise Lost or whatever. I do believe in the new films we will know a little bit more about the Engineers, perhaps even visiting their homeworld with Giger style buildings, after all Covenant pays a tribute to him with David's sketches and with Elizabeth Shaw's body. Also David did learn about the Engineer's way as he commented on the prequel short film, and he is still alive.

I mean u can't watch this film as many times as prometheus which begs questions each time ei watched it.

I think the human crew was not the focus of this film. Hardly we see any real reactions on them, not only about the alien environment, but on the situations. David and Walter are the real characters here, their interaction, their interest are more interesting than the crew's. I think the crew are shell-shocked, and clearly out of their league, not even trained to ask the right questions. Walter and more so, David is the holder of culture, interest in art, philosophy, and human nature. Ridley did mention in an interview with the Empire magazine he is wondering what kind of selection programme was there for the colonist. What training had been? Who would leave their home so far to an uncertainty with no returning? Obviously the base was the early American colonist.

I still think that the original concept by Geiger was that the engineer race advanced to the point of biological mastery that they pretty much attained immortality but in exchange lost their ability to reproduce. This may be the reason we see no females of their species. It also explains why they would sacrifice one of their own to seed a planet and create new life.

I just find the the Engineer storyline to be infinity more interesting than the Xenomorphs, one is an advanced species/civilization and culture, while the others are more like extremely aggressive Tasmania Devils on steroids and PCP. I'm like you Kroft. I do like the Xenomorphs in the Alien story; it's essential, but I also love the 'Engineer' angle and was annoyed that Ridley did not pursue this. It was the way the story should have gone and what all the 'Prometheus' fans (like myself) eagery awaited. We certainly were ripped off. Also I think it is important to be aware of the difference between the Space Jockey, The Engineers and the race on the planet that Alien Covenant was set. The Jockey fron Alien is much taller than the engineers and I think that they created the engineers and the Engineers created the race that David wiped out in Alien Covenant (their faces were not transluscent). We haven't seen the species that is the 'Space Jockey'. The Engineers are obviously aggressive and maybe warlike. I believe that the 'Space Jockey' species may be benevolent. Who knows, but the 'Space Jockey' obviously has to be addressed in a future film if we ever get one.

Since the newest release of even *better* Alien Covenant concept art a few days ago I am really starting to think the Engineers on Planet 4 were the *original* Engineers that created the "albino Destroyer Engineers" we saw in Prometheus which I am now calling "AI Engineers". I think everything we thought we were going to see in Covenant, including most of what we see in the recently released Covenant concept art (such as Gigeresque architecture, a massive orerry, the beefed up albino Engineers from Prometheus) was intentionally held out for the third film which will make Covenant make a lot more sense. Ridley Scott made a comment about the sequel focusing on AI and what kind of world AI's would create......with the intention of having us believe that we will see what kind of world David will create with the colonist specimens *BUT* I think we will see the AI Engineer homeworld and we will learn that the first AI Engineer we saw in Prometheus at the waterfall was an *early* AI Engineer created by the original Engineers that was used as a guinea pig for their earlier biological experiments many thousands, if not millions of years ago. But over the ages the AI Engineers revolted against their creators just as David has done against mankind and asserted their dominance over the original Engineers. Completely taking over and exponentially advancing their technology while outgrowing their creators by leaps and bounds, eventually becoming the Gods of their own creators (as you see the Planet 4 Engineers chanting and waving to their Gods aboard David's approaching Juggernaut). Creating their own Gigeresque home world(s) away from Planet 4. By the time of the events on LV-223 two thousand years ago the AI Engineers had created highly advanced hypersleep chambers and grown their own body armor/pressure suits and were formulating numerous variations of the black goo pathogen that were being used all over the Universe on countless worlds. LV-223 was just one of many, many outposts. Being just one for this quadrant of the galaxy. I think any semblance of this was kept out of David's dialogue in Covenant intentionally in order to keep it a secret for as long as possible for surprise factor. They might even introduce a new intergalactic villain to thicken the plot. So I think we will see AI Engineers investigate Planet 4 along WU and at least one as of yet mysterious party. And so David basically wiped out the AI Engineer's creators as a 1st affront and is moving to assault the AI Engineers on their home world with what will be many Xenomorphs and facehuggers. But, he will probably secure at least one other Juggernaut elsewhere and load it/them up with eggs for the assault. One of which may end up being the derelict on LV-426 but unless David makes himself able to gestate a Xenomorph somehow and grow like 4 feet the pilot of the LV-426 Juggernaut still appears to have been an Engineer. Possibly an AI Engineer that hijacked and flew David's Juggernaut, or one of them, away from the Engineer home world to save the rest of his kind....

I'm a huge fan of Alien and Predator series. Prometheus and Alien Covenant takes the series to a new level. Totally agree on a story of the engineers, or a story of engineers who weren't on the planet when David destroyed it only to return to their wrecked homeland. Plz plz plz Ridley Scott... We've been waiting for more than 5 years now for a sequel

I've been thinking about this. The only way to bring the engineers alive is to create a seperate franchise just for them. Include the Giger art and create a story line and a plot thats dark, sinister almost but more civilization based. That's the elephant in the room really. The story of engineers and how to set up a plot. I would start with the first scene in the other movies of them seeding earth and then tell a different story that's not about weyland or xenomorphs.

The two Neomorph's was more than enough xeno's running a muck. Although, for me adding Protomorphs into the mix was overkill! I'd wish the AC film kept the gigeresque city design, and went ahead with expanding the Space-Jockey culture and technology... For me it would have been legit fan service.

Kroft, I really appreciate these in depth theories of the Alien franchise. I love the new direction, and feel like Ridley Scott should just make it his way and stop pandering to the general public who just want pew pew and bang bang. The use of philosophy and religion is what really conveys true artistry in the newer movies. The complexities seem endless and the world building just gets better and better. He knows how to give us just enough to keep wanting more.

My idea for a third alien/prometheus movie is as follows: The engineers are the main characters in the movie and comes to the planet that was in the Prometheus movie. There they find Weyland inside the crashed spaceship. They have a blue elixir which they empty all over him and bring him to life. In the next part they arrive at the planet from alien covenant and find the other robot(Walter) who is david's twin. The engineers use the blue elixir and repairs him. Once awaken the engineers and Weyland get to know all the horrible things that David has done, and weyland says "we have to stop David" . They set course for origae. When they arrive, they scans all the planet, and finds the planet is full of hostile organisms except on a high mountain where they discover that there are humans inside a cave. Inside the cave they meet a herd of children, who tell that when they had lived on the planet for over ten years, they began to be attacked by Xenomorphs and all the adults died or were turned into these creatures. There were also great giants developed by someone the children calls David. The engineers get ready to wipe out all the Xenomorphs that David has created, but the great giants manage to escape with one of the engineers' spaceships. The engineers and Weyland hunts the spaceship and manage to force the spaceship down on the planet lv426.Where it start sending a distress signal. The engineers return to Origae to find David, but discover that he has escaped. In the last part we see David arriving and meeting an unknown alien species on a tropical like planet. And that makes the cliffhanger that ends the third movie.

Whenever Engineers appear on screen, we are about to learn something (or at least prompted to consider more to their story). However, when xenomorphs appear onscreen, it's an indication that we are going to have additional jump screams as it turns into a Scream film or a Friday 13th.

0:24 When I first saw that still I thought, oh, Nicolas Ghesquière put his models in little bowler hats like the one worn by the wee lassie on the far left for the Fall 2006 Balenciaga collection, and they worked well with those pretty peplum jackets and simple sheaths. But I'm not sure about how well they go with the engineers' long flowing cloaks. So I watched the scene in the movie and was relieved to see when she turns to leg it that her bonnet far more closely resembles the giant trapper hats of the Prada Resort 2019 New York Collection. So she dies in a far more appropriately accessorised manner than I had feared.
