I would guess that the strict building controls that were enforced and upheld by council inspectors have been replaced with "Self regulation" like everything else; and "Self regulation" means no regulation at all (look what happened to the banks) Probably the best houses to buy are the 1960 (or before) Local Authority houses as all standards were enforced -including minimum space. Some new build "three bedroom" homes are more like one bedroom and two storage cupboards.

Asa Mitchell umm... Midcentury houses are much worse than 2000s and 2010s builds. they didn't have granite, they were 1200 sqft on average where as a new house is 2600sqft. The average new house has a 2-3 car garage and 4-5 bedrooms while a 60s house has 2-3 bedrooms and 1-2 car garages

I'm a legal secretary to a conveyancing solicitor and I know it's fact that if you are being given a gifted deposit, the anti-money laundering regulation states that whoever gives you the gift must provide evidence of the source of that money. They also have to get legal advice from an independent solicitor and sign a deed of waiver to show that it is a gift and that they won't have an interest in the property upon completion. When they are instructing their own solicitor they must provide ID to that solicitor for anti-money laundering purposes. Also, the cashback is a percentage, not the whole amount. As to using only the builder's solicitors is a load of rubbish, the only reason that company got grief from other solicitors was not because they were idiots, it was because there was a huge risk of fraud!

The main reason i can't stand Britain, we live in Poland now, absolutely beautiful country, we have a new 130m2 detatched house on 1000m2 of land, which we paid £80k for, the build quality is astounding, if a bomb hit it I'm sure it would still be standing, we even have a teriva ceilng, Half the people in Poland build their own houses, ours is actually small here, Just look at those new houses, all squashed together and boxes of expensive shite

@Seymour Butts To be fair; circa 1911 everyone was thinking in terms of radical right/left wing solutions .History tells us that both were total disasters and did nothing but cause mass murder and oppression. In his later books he at least begins to realise that the flowery ideals of socialism/communism are merely hot air used by psychopaths to gain power. In "Oil" I have to say that socialist Bunny really needs a good kicking ! (though I loved the quip about the rich generously refusing to buy cabbages and lard so that the poor could have something to eat!) For some reason Sinclair always had impossibly rich people as socialists (Lanny Budd in the World's End series of books-of which "The Dragon's Teeth" is still a great read about the rise of Hitler.) All the great writers of the left ended up disillusioned with socialism when faced with the reality of it (Orwell, Hemingway , John Dos Passos ,Steinbeck )even, though it has to be said that the middle way-Roosevelt's New Deal in the 30's worked and probably staved off fascism/communism in the US and the West . An extremely rare example of constructive government actually working for the people. And of course Sinclair's legacy was the introduction of meat inspection and food hygiene laws ! Not his intention when he simply described every day practices at the abattoir !

The new build property market is like the wild west. I'm not just talking cowboy workmanship, it appears property developers can do what they like and are law upon themselves. Forcing homeowners to pay extortionate ground rent/maintenance ground fees, which you are tied into. Then there are the cheap building materials, which don't reflect on the value of the property. Forced to use one broadband provider. Without the competition, they can charge the earth. At the end of the day, I don't blame the developers, they are there to make money. I blame the government for turning a blind eye. This industry should be highly regulated, so homeowners get value for money and are not being constantly ripped off.

Whn you song a mortgage (death pledge) agreement, this authorises the bank to tell Doris upstairs to type the number written on the form into a computer, thus magicking the money into the economy from thin air. The bank DO NOT transfer money from a special account into your account. THis is a common misunderstanding. The bank also DO NOT offer up anything of value as their part of the contract, which is usual in contract law. Ipso facto, the bank has no risk whatsoever and has nothing to lose. Then they also charge you to replay the money that came out of fresh air, at interest, for decades with a final total many times greater than the original loan, in addition to initial fees for the privilege of applying not to mention the bank owning your house for years. The entire mortgage and banking system is based on fraud and is a giant Ponzi scheme. Look it up.

Why are these Britishes so lazy?!? If the house is crap and its value is dropping then fix it. Just caulk the bricks back into place, maybe go to Home Depot and buy "wood" floor tiles to flatten the hall floor and grout it. Then super glue the bannister into place to fix it. Just do some simple repairs and it will be all better. Yall act like you need a professional contractor to repair the littlest things.
