PLEASE BEWARE - Tactics Of Rogue Traders Locksmiths Scammers

This BBC documentary which was air a few years ago now, shows Rogue Trader Locksmiths, the type of tactics that are still used today to lure vulnerable customers. When customers call for an emergency locksmith they initially quote a very cheap price to lure the customers. Upon arrival they would nearly always say the only way to get in is to break the lock without any attempt to open via non destructive methods. Then they would charge ridiculous amount of money for it. And more money for a replacement lock.
Even though this particular company featured is no longer operating, unfortunately they tend to operate under different names.
Tips to avoid them:
- Check their reviews, especially their 1 star reviews.
- Always give a clear description of the situation i.e. lost key, key left inside etc
- Confirm the price is for opening without breaking the lock or if breaking the lock the cost of replacing the lock

After watching the lock picking lawyer for 6 months, I invested in my own set of picks, within an hour of getting them I had picked my front and rear Euro locks and inner Yale lock, and with further practice was able to pick locks with security pins.

I did the same, just for the fun of it. One day I got curious and thought... How bad could my front door be? Raked it open quicker than I normally fumble around with the key!!! Absolutely useless, even against the most unskilled attack. Soon as I move out I'm recommending to the landlord to get a better one.

This happened to me in Vancouver Canada. Same lock, one locksmith says it will be 270 cad, other one says 40 cad. The guy who wanted 270 used powered tools for no reason saying it is one of the hardest locks, it was a regular room in the house, wasn't even an outside door.

Using a virtual address isn't necessarily a bad thing, particularly if you work from home and deal with the public. Having said that, these people were appalling. I like the way Watchdog was so robust in its investigations, it is a shame that the BBC don't offer it is a dedicated program any more.

Little tip, if you get ripped by a scumbag company and it is a limited company, the directors of that company should have their personal home address on record at companies house. Then all you need to do is check on companies house or one of the companies information search sites to find their home addresses! What you do after that is your decision but it can be very effective! Another technique to get your own back if they don't feel like cooperating after a personal visit, do an anonymous report to HMRC that you suspect the company to be making fraudulent account submissions and or fiddling their VAT. Of course you won't know for certain if they are, but it's a good bet they will be if they are scamming their customers. And HMRC will give them a very good going over, and if they do find fraud they will be properly fcuked up!

Giving these scammers money isn’t solving anything. If RT still exists, the stings should involve no payment. If the rogues want to pursue payment for their services let them go to small claims and the BBC could present their evidence too.

Somewhat misleading video, it gives the impression that drilling is ALWAYS bad when sometimes it's the best/only option the real scam is that they haven't tried other methods first and how much they're charging. So when a genuine locksmith does need to drill a lock customers will think they're being ripped off.

  • @yourlondonlocksmith1697
