I completely love the 1050 engine on this bike. It's a true great. A V twin will always be different from a parallel twin. It's not monstrously powerful, or intimidating, it just has a great feel to it, with lots of torque and, probably, nothing doing over 100mph. I care not. Fabulous machine. I had one for a few weeks when my CB650R was knocked over in a carpark. Bring back the SV1000, I say. That was a really good bike.

I agree with you on the engine. It feels a lot more powerful than it is on paper and handles 90+ mph on long freeway stretches way better than my 1200gs. The GS does everything else better but the vstrom is really a great bike for the money.

@@jeremyjohnson6438 i can honestly say there's no difference whatsoever, once you get used to the bike, it can handle like a sport bike, just make sure to put street sticky tires if you will barely take it off road. Sticky tires on an adventure bike are a no brainer if you use is as a commuter bike, do not use off road tires if it's a not exclusively an off road bike, it is actually dangerous with the lack of traction that you get.

Ive got a 2014 1000 that I ride tarmac/gravel 90/10, so the wheels on that bike have never let me down. Since I bought it slightly used for only $8,000 about 4 years ago, I don't feel intimidated by my buddy's $30,000 Multistrada V4, even though I'm quite down in the speed department to his bike. My bike was cheap to purchase and operate. I'd probably stick with the standard 1050, since I have a DRZ400S for off road (single-track) use.

If lighter weight is your top priority, just get 450cc-500cc single cylinder enduro bike or something like the KTM 690 Enduro R and set it up for adventure riding or rallies. Eventually, some manufacturer will crack the weight code I bet and then the industry will shift. My guess is that manufacturer will be KTM or Triumph. We’ll see though.

I ride a V-Storm 650XT and it’s perfect for me, 90% sealed roads and 10% gravel, almost no off road riding. I was considering upgrading to a 1050XT to take a pillion on similar roads but I wonder if the 1050DE is straying too far from the V-Strom’s market niche into a very competitive section of the market? If off road riding is a priority, there are plenty of more capable bikes out there.

If the v-strom 650 got USD forks it would be hard to tell it from the 1050. Now the 650/700 is finally getting USD forks it ends up being a p-twin. It's a bit like the yamaha MT range. You know straight away it's the mt-07 by the forks. Sometimes you see USD forks but it looks small it's the MT-03 I think old fashioned forks is just marketing really.

Useful upgrades but it’ll mean nothing if Suzuki can’t keep the price down - V Strom’s have a rep for being bullet proof and easy to work on. I could be tempted to trade my 2018 1000 for the more road biased version, but the price will have to be super competitive. It seems to me that the people at Suzuki made some smart modifications, who is going to use a motorcycle of more than 200 kg to do enduro or hardcore off road? It's stupid... I say it because of what they say about the 170mm suspension, I think now it's the perfect balance for a really versatile, reliable and excellent quality bike, anyway if you give me a choice I'll stick with the base Africa twin, Cheers !

For those who normally ride like in the video, and mostly off tarmac, twenty-one inch front wheels are great. Not so much for the rest of us who ride 80% on roads and want a wide range of tire selection.

@@jeremyjohnson6438 In my opinion, unless you know you need a 21” front wheel, you don’t need it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s handy if you ride single track or on a lot of gravel roads . . . or you want it as a fashion statement. I certainly prefer 19” front - much better tire choice, better tarmac manners and decent stability off tarmac.

Taking all the big adventure bikes in the world, I wonder what the percentage of miles are offroad. 10%? 1%? 0.1%? I know other countries are different, but for the UK, I can't wrap my head around why anyone would want a 21" front wheel when over 99% of their riding will be on-road.

  • @Nulrom

Because it doesn't matter the 97 if you feel insecure in the 3%. Btw I agree with you, I don't think there are enough good riders to really use a 21 of a 1000cc bike. BMW teaches that.

@@brucerossonthetube That's awesome, dude. The envy is real. I see you're in Canada where you have access to that kind of riding. Here in Scotland there is nearly zero reason to have an adventure bike or dualsport. It's illegal to ride in government run forestry areas and the rest is owned by landowners and estates. I'd love to have a reason to own an old DRZ or XR, but there is just no point.

It will be difficult for Suzuki to take any of the adventure market with this bike, it’s looking more like Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda have lost their way in the last 3 years although Hondas strong point is the Africa Twin. Competition is now so strong from Europe globally from Ducati, Triumph, KTM.

The money to be made is in attractively priced aventure tourer and forget about off-road capability. Suzuki keeps trying to make the VStrom into something it is not without complete redesign. It is just plain dumb strategy that will not win them market share exce0t from the gullible. I am by the way a proud 2018 1000XT owner but would only be interested in base version.
