Nero's Got Rage and Angst || Devil Trigger: Devil May Cry 5 OST

Ойындар

Really fun to explore Devil Trigger and revisit more Devil May Cry "anthems" as it were. This music is really FUN and so satisfying to listen to. It's also amazing how we're able to really understand the character of Nero from the music alone. Really adds to the depth of the characterization within the game itself. VGM is too cool.

The funny thing about this song is that the song itself is Canon within Universe because it's the song Nero listens to in his headphones when he fights as well as a song that plays in the background of fights

So, spoilers, but a small detail in this song: "There's no way to contain This storm swelling inside me" "I am the storm that is approaching" It's a little callback to the connection between these two characters. Nero is growing into an unstoppable storm, while Vergil is already there.

People were primarily upset with Nero because he is not Dante. They wanted to play as Dante and you spend most of the game as not Dante. I guess it is almost an MGS2 scenario minus the "Gotcha! You only briefly play as Snake!" and surprising everybody with the new guy. Raiden also started out hated and then later on became well liked. Personally I liked both of them, but I was hardly the majority.

So, funny thing about the opening line of the song. It's actually a callback to a speech that Nero gave in DMC4, and completely tells you everything you need to know about him, and even how he differs from his father: "From that day forward, my arm changed.. And a voice echoed... Power.. Give me more power! And if I become a demon, so be it. I'll endure the exile. Anything to protect her!" It's an admission that Nero is more than okay with using his Demonic powers, so long as he has the strength to protect those he loves. Even if it means he'll be seen as a monster. And of course, this ties in swimmingly to the central theme of the DMC series, as a whole: that no matter who you are, what challenges you face, or how hard it is to stand, your heart will always be the thing that gives you the strength to win the day. And even if you did not start out with a heart(such as Nero's grandfather), you can still gain one, and rise above what you once were. It also shows us, again, how Nero differs from his father. Vergil had always gained power, for power's sake; so that none could ever hurt him the way he was hurt, as a child. As such, he cast aside his humanity, in the search of this power; "Buried the Light" deep within, so to speak. On the other side of the spectrum, we also have Nero, who was orphaned as a child, but taken in by a small family, with his adoptive brother, Credo, and his now-lover Kyrie. Nero had always sought power for the sake of protecting those he cared about, and only for that purpose(which makes him an extremely close parallel to his grandfather, who rose above his Demon self, "Awakened" to justice, and saved humanity, later falling in love with one, despite being a demon). With Devil Trigger, it is true that the song reflects his cock attitude, but it also reflects just how much frustration he has, at his inability to measure up, and protect; specifically protecting his adoptive brother, Credo, who died in DMC4, while Nero was powerless to do anything. And so what does Nero do? He "embraces the Darkness deep within"; using his Demon power as a boon to protect those he loves, even if it means he's going to occasionally be consumed by his own wickedness, and be exiled; as long as he can keep having the strength to protect those he loves, he'll keep pushing, no matter what. It's FUCKING AMAZING.

  • @Spartan120

10:25 You actually described Nero as we first see him in DMC4: An angry, but powerful teenage punk with a rebellious streak. His fear is one of the many connections he has to his predecessors: Dante & Vergil. Similar to Dante's origin, he hated his demonic power, though this came from a fear of being seen as just like the demons he hunts. In parallel to Vergil, he's afraid that he lacks the strength to protect everyone he loves, so he still yearns for more power. DMC5's song, Legacy, beautifully ties it all together in the context of these 3 characters, though I won't spoil the specifics of that part for you. :D

  • @ionamorwenna5564

Something I never see talked about is the very first line. "I'll endure the exile." Because that's one of Nero's lines straight out of DMC4. "I'll endure the exile. Anything to protect her." Nero grew up surrounded by... more or less a cult. Anything demon related except for the legacy of one demon who fought for the humans is shunned. So when an incident occured that forced Nero to question his humanity, he hid that side of him from his peers. During the course of DMC4 though, that part of him proves an asset in combat and he starts using it more openly until in a very important cutscene (and gameplay power-up) he decides to stop hiding that power no matter the circumstances, as long as it keeps the one most important to him safe. It's a core part of his personality, of his motivation, and I very much like that they acknowledge that moment from DMC4 in Devil Trigger.

You should really play through DMC V and see how damn right you are, Nero is supposed to be the Polar opposite of Vergil, Someone who Discarded everything he had in pursuit of Endless power to become so strong that he can never be hurt again. Nero is a Kid with good heart who just wants to protect those closest to him, Even if it meant dealing with the devil, but he is haunted by an inferiority complex which he hides behind a confident facade, Until the climax of the game where he resolves once and for all that any family he has will not die. Resulting in arguably one of the best cutscenes in modern gaming history if you ask me.

Nero as a character is built around explosive anger and power, from his personality to his weaponry. He keeps a cool facade around others but is very emotional and hot headed, he would rather brute force his way through a fight, smashing around his foes with great force rather than technique. His gun, Blue Rose is a double barrel revolver that channels his devil energy into bullets, much like Dantes "Ebony & Ivory", but he can load it with these high caliber rounds. One used for opening the wound and the 2nd to bounce around inside his foe. These shots can be charged causing explosions. All of this done single handedly. His sword The Red Queen is a modified blade that has an engine on it. The engine stores kinetic force and releases it when swung, noted to be "far to unwieldy for human strength", but Nero handles it rather well. His swings are unruly and wild, his weight shifting around as he swings a sword which is just a tad too powerful for him, but he plays into that. His devil strength allowing him to effectively use such a powerful weapon. His theme encapsulates this. Raw power, unruly strength and a fresh feeling for a new Devil Hunter.

On the "he rather brute force his wat through a fight", there is a perfect encapsulation of that during the Vergil fight. Nero and Vergil trade blows, but Vergil effortlessly wins the exchange and stabs Nero with the Yamato. But if you pop your DT, Nero just shouts "FUCK YOU!", pulls the sword out while grabbing Vergil and then stabs *him* with the Yamato

You're 100% right about the chorus melody being the same toward the end of Bury the Light. Casey made sure to do that for... reasons. They're even polar opposites as far as lyrics. Devil Trigger has "Embrace the darkness deep within me," while Bury the Light is, well, "Bury the light deep within." One accepting his demons alongside his humanity while the other rejects his humanity to become a demon, both in attempt to get stronger. Bury the Light hits harder for me just because I'm more of a metal/rock enjoyer, but I can get down with some techno any day.

Nero was disrespected and demeaned pretty much his entire life up to this point, and it all culminates with Vergil taking his arm and Dante, one of the few people Nero held real respect and trust for, calling him dead weight. This is the point where his anger boils over, and he becomes way more reckless and aggressive to prove himself. Also one detail I love, Vergil's theme: Bury the light deep within Nero's theme: Embrace the darkness that's within me all with the same music at that point

I really love how DMCV absolutely modernized the sonic identity of the DMC franchise by just making the whole thing just like... incredibly good 4 on the floor Dance Metal. And I think that having such a strong and evocative sonic identity is so often undervalued, with so many action games going for either something totally industrial, very Dad Rock, or sometimes an epic orchestral score. But DMC being so much *fun* and the music reflecting that is something I really truly love about the games. I really hope that we're going to see a new musical revolution in games soon, because so many of the AAA titles are playing it safe with their OSTs, and having good music is such a part of the whole experience! It's a big reason why Undertale went so viral!

The neatest part of dmc games music is its always been tied to the combo proficiency of the player. The reason theres such a long build up is as you ramp up the combat the song builds and shifts gears as long as you play flawlessly and keep the beating enemies in faster and flashier ways. If u stop/get hit it resets and begins building up again.

I like how this song characterizes the various influences within Nero and their journey towards the apotheosis he achieves at the end of the story. There's the angry adolescent that he hasn't quite managed to let go of yet, the demon that revels in its own power and exerting that power over others, and the man he wants to be mostly for the sake of Kyrie. In the end he doesn't become *any* of them but rather a gestalt of them all - this "avenging angel" type figure who isn't afraid of his power and uses it to set things right while being at peace with himself.

It always amuses me that Nero doesn't even have his Devil Trigger until the very end of the game. Also, if you haven't already, I'd recommend taking a look at Grimm's Theme and Nightmare King Grimm from the Hollow Knight OST.

As always, a very precise analysis of what the character is like with just the song. And although I know it's not the main focus, if you want to see something of Nero's personality I recommend you watch the opening cutscene (the van cinematic... and maybe the next one too (the cinematic of the battle in the bridge)) or the trailer game announcement trailer of E3 2018. Regards ^^

Bury the Light is beautiful, but Devil Trigger is. I've kind of taken it as MY song. I'm a trans guy, and when I first started coming out I listened to the DMC V soundtrack a lot. This song always gives me strength and fire, because I won't be tamed, I won't let my life be dictated by others, but I'm also working really hard on being more loving and open and that gentler section "we fight through to get closer, like a silver bullet piercing through, I throw myself into you" really resonates too. This is the song that helps me be me when prejudice and hatred is making life hard.

You mention the part that sounds a lot like Bury the Light, I do like that you picked up on that but I also like how Bury the Light also incorporates elements of Dante (Devils Never Cry from DMC3) and V (the violin solo). It's like the song is pulling in elements that serve to emphasis Vergil's humanity.

There's a video here on KZread called "Bury the light x devil trigger" by the user Avulian that I love when he combined a part of both songs that used the same tone, the moment bury the light sings "bury the light deep within" at the same time sound from devil trigger "Embrace the darkness that's within me", that show you the duality in both characters and it's sooo good

my favorite character moment with Nero that relates to the anger depicted in this song is that when you use the Devil Trigger with him in a fight, the camera will zoom in on him as he yells "FUCK YOU!!!" while throwing a middlefinger to everyone he's fighting before turning into a demon. So yeah, LOTS of anger management and daddy issues.

A great detail of "Bury the Light" and "Devil Trigger" are the lines: "Embrace the darkness that's withing me" and "Bury the light deep within" Which would mean that Nero is accepting his demonic nature, while Vergil rejects his human half because he sees it as a weakness. But in theory (I don't know if they have ever confirmed it as canon), thanks to both Dante and Nero, we can assume that human emotions are great enhancers for the devil power.

I think there was a theory about how demons search for human blood as it gives them strength, and that's why Dante and Vergil have that amount of power over other demons, as they have a biological infinite amount of human blood supply, and the case for Nero, even more potential as he is technically a 25% Sparda's blood, that same gene has even more human blood to feed of to give him power

Really incredible breakdown I hope you can look into Devils Never Cry or Subhuman. Both are themes for Dante. One goes into a mix of Operaic and some electronic-sounding music while Subhuman ditches any semblance of Opera and goes heavy with the Guitars and dubsteppish tuned

My mind is blown. I've played this game so many times and I never realized that the part that starts with "Embrace the darkness.." from Devil Trigger and "Bury the light deep within" in Bury the Light Are the same melody and everything just a change in lyrics. This is incredible considering the relation between the two characters these songs are about.

Hell yeah! 2 DMC5 songs done, two more to go! And yeah, since Vergil is Nero's father, there is some major connections with the music. I believe the same goes for V, since he's the human aspect of Vergil. But strangely, Dante's theme basically has no connections. Despite the fact they're twins. I personally think this is because this game puts Nero as the focus. But in a narrative sence, it's because Dante and Vergil are so different from eachother that they don't even sound remotely similar. Another way to look at it is this, Vergil buries the light, his humanity, letting the demon out. Nero happily let's his demon out, he doesn't suppress his humanity, but he accepts his darkness. And Dante begrudgingly let's out the demon, he's hated demons his whole life, so he only gets power when absolutely necessary.

If I remember correctly, the opening lyrics "I'll endure the exile" it's something Nero says in DMC4, remembering the time his demonic arm woke. He says he wouldn't mind becoming a devil if he could have the power to protect those he loves, he could endure the exile that would bring.

Encapsulates the mix of frustration, rage & excitement that Nero feels everytime he goes into a demon fight. The most realistic of the 3 Sparda blood relatives. Man, I love Devil May Cry. I just love stylish technical action games. The stupid reboot can be thrown off a cliff tho.

DMC V OST is what happens when content is created by a professional who's also a hardcore fan, and not just paid creator. there's something in all 3 themes of main characters that reflects them perfectly, on some deep, unexplainable level. And it transition so well into their gameplay. I've heard their themes long before i actually played the game, and i had a hard time understanding Dante's theme, but when i actually played as him, and got his moves, racked up combo meter to SSS it just clicked, it made complete and perfect sense.

I love both and it's a bit unreal how much raw emotion Casey Edwards got into these songs. Nero has this visceral anger inside him and he's been hurt. And we've seen that hurt well in DMC4 and 5. But I think I like Bury the Light just a bit more. I feel like, Bury the Light is a touch more personal, dipping into a side we never really get to see of Vergil. He's always portrayed as more power for power's sake. The song gives us a glimmer into the fear, the pain, inside. How there is MORE in there than just power hunger. He has to push down his humanity - his light - because he's been alone for so long and it's the only way he knows how to survive. Bury the light deep within. Cast aside, there's no coming home. Nero, for better or worse, has a home he carved out. Vergil feels he has nothing but himself. His brother didn't come for him (that he knew of). His mother didn't come for him (that he knew of). He didn't know he had a son. As far as he knew, he's only had himself and, eventually, a brother who doesn't remember him and battles him at every turn. So he'll do what he's always had to do - survive. By any means necessary. And the song really really lays that all to bare with the beautiful, agonized singing of Victor Borba.

Nero was adopted by the brother of the girl he has a crush on. Well they adopted him and I guess he grew those emotions and I don't know but perhaps he has a part of him struggling with this since those two persons are his family and then he actually kills his "brother" iirc. Also not knowing his true father until way into his 20s and always knowing that part of him is demonic really puts him on a bad road since growing up in a church basically. So hiding his devil arm all his life and then trying to save his family from demons and all that jizz. Knowing that he has to channel his inner demon to do so. He's asking for acceptance but knows that he's no mere human and is afraid of not being accepted because of his heritage. The characters in Devil May Cry are well written and clearly you can see how human they actually are despite being half demon and extremely powerful. Also would like to recommend "Holy Saint, Holy Spirit" from the Trails of Cold Steel series. Thanks for your awesome content!

It's hard for me to believe that you, kind sir, haven't played any of the DMC games, because your brief character analysis just from the music theme was, like, spot on. Answering your questions about how much Nero has suffered in his life... oh boy, where do I even begin. Well, he's an adopted kid, and his relationship with his older brother Credo (who was also probably his father figure) was complicated, to say the least. He also was a member of the order, which was actually a cult, governed by an evil pope like figure who went full Palpatine and tried tried to pull off a monster protection racket in order to ascend to power. Oh, and his older brother was loyal to this order, unlike Nero himself, who never actually cared in the first place, and then worked to thwart the plans of BBEG. Naturally, he had to fought his brother, bonus points for being one of the most fun boss fights in the game, because it feels so personal. Also, the BBEG tried to use his significant other to lure Nero and use his demonic power as fuel. So yeah, the kid has quite a lot of luggage. Funnily enough though, I think he's the most healthy in the whole messed up DMC family. Vergil have discarded his humanity. Dante honestly seems like a stepford snarker, there's a whole theory that he's actually depressed. And Nero, while having a chip on his shoulder, is just a kind-hearted kid. Like, the first thing he does, when he sees a limping stranger on the streets? He invites him to come in for a dinner.
