    The soundtrack was clearly meant to explain his story and personality through music. You don't have to know his backstory if you didn't play the game, but if you take a look at his design and compare with the song, you get the gist of whatever you need to know about him. Confident, calm, capable to unleash his power in a split second (which is symbolized by a switch from calm verse into chorus). Capcom gave Casey Edwards some clear instructions when commisioning him to write Vergil's theme. Calmer verses are switched around with furious choruses, it's not just a heavy metal banger from beginning to end.

And I don't mean that in a demeaning way, we all of us have our... "demons" that linger throughout our lives. Adulthood is not only NOT a cure-all, it often amplifies. This man wasn't only broken and miserable to begin with, he was stuck in hell for a few decades. The fact that he can function at all is a testament to his will, his mother and brother's love, and damn that last scene with Nero. *LOVE* as sappy and stupid as it can appear sometimes is the only thing that's going to save any of us. He's popular because he's such a fantastic rival. A very good foil to Dante... and he evolves as Dante does to continue to mirror him and act as a ... lol... motivator. I think his existence in an interactive medium was used very well. I think it's interesting to compare him in (I''m ignoring Nelo Angelo) 2 vs 5. In 2, he's responsible for Dante overcoming his own weaknesses. Dante's used to coasting through life on his devil blood, resenting it but using it to get by. And then his brother shows up with the same natural advantage that he actually trained... and wipes the floor with him. Just absolutely crushes him into a paste. Until Dante takes himself seriously and acknowledges that he can't change his nature, he's just going to get stomped on by this guy who might as well be a stranger to him. And in 5 sure he kinda stomps on Dante again but that's not really off his own power. His devil half has inherited power that doesn't belong to him. By the time Dante finishes the arc he started back in 2... Vergil's catching back up to him yknow. (And needs to stop being such a tryhard LOL) at the end they're equals. Got there different paths. Still rivals. But - I think they have a grudging respect for the other. Unclear if Dante ever liked 'V' much they don't talk a lot on screen. I hope for a 6 where we get to see them work together for a while. I think ultimately they work best as rivals but that doesn't mean they have to be Abel and Cain 24/7. Might be fun to see how a less destructive rivalry can teach them both. Curious to see Nero's arc going forward as well...

When I first listened to this song, I just texted my friend and said “HOLY F*CK I FEEL SO ALIVE RIGHT NOW.” It’s also cool that you talk about metal screaming actually needing technique and practice. I used to be in that camp where I didn’t think it took that much practice until I watched that one viral video where an interviewer asked rock fans to do their best metal scream and most couldn’t do it, and those who could said that it took years of practice in order to scream properly and well.

He makes metal music and metal-focused humor videos, though I haven't watched him in years so he may have shifted a bit. But he did a video just going around and asking people to give their best screams, then anyone who just did one no worries he would immediately ask "how many years have you been singing/screaming?" It's a great rebuttal to the people that think the way you mention you used to.

    This song is the perfect character study of Vergil. On first glance it sounds aggressive but elegant, switching up a constant calm yet threatening aura with sudden bursts of activity - basically emulating his deceptively casual fighting style where he keeps back and waits to punish every little opening with fast attacks. But underneath this facade, there are racing thoughts and fears that keep driving him ever forward, never to rest, as you pointed out. The dive into his inner monologue after the first burst of the recurring motif reflects the calm and collected demeanor he usually shows outside combat - with the instrumental part afterwards trailing off into a thoughtful pattern that might come off as monotone if the off-beat drums, the constantly throbbing bass/guitar and the nervously jumping synth didn't keep chasing you forward. He seems unable to ever fully calm his mind, so lacking the inner stability, he tries to assert it to the outside, breaking into the chorus in which he reaffirms himself and his standing to the world. But that ends in a burst of aggression which again drops him into the introspective. This time he gets more emotional, frustrated with the turn of events. Now he deliberately escalates it into aggression, carrying this momentum into the second chorus in an attempt to make it work this time. But while he managed to carry it further, he drops to the lowest he's been and we're greeted with his deepest thoughts - which slowly begin feeding the desperation and eventually a driving aggression that carries him higher than ever before. This time he breaks through with the chorus' melody, but forgoes the original lyrics entirely this time. Instead, he brings his introspective thoughts out to this level and manages to reach an equilibrium between the two, which allows him to accept himself for who he is and bookend into the motif from the beginning. Pretty much every line in the lyrics references an aspect of his character lore as well, connecting them to give a solid picture of who Vergil is on the inside. While the games never come out and mention it straight up, this song makes his motivations very clear: He felt powerless - left to his own devices, betrayed, beaten down, used for other people's gains again and again - so he became obsessed with getting stronger, to never have to suffer that fate again. He sees himself as someone who has survived the darkest of fates time and time again under his own power, while his twin brother Dante leads a cushy life, constantly relying on help from others. In his trauma he's unable to see the strength that comes with cooperation, ever since he believed his mother abandoned him in favor of his brother when their home was attacked. Because of this, the lyrics are filled with images of helplessness, corruption, isolation, duality and the pursuit of power. In this song, he reaches an understanding of these aspects of his, reflecting his character arc throughout DMC5. And while he has hardly beaten his inner demons for good (pun intended), he has done the first step to find his own path - including allowing himself to open up to his son Nero somewhat, whose theme "Devil Trigger" is referenced coming out of the third chorus. Casey really outdid himself with this song - and it doesn't hurt that it creates a feeling of power and control as you slice your way through hordes of demons to it as well.

    so for anyone who doesn't know Vergil's story allow me to summarize it. Vergil is the twin brother of Dante, the main character of DMC, and a half-demon, half-human child of the demon king Sparda and a human named Eva. One day he disappeared and demons led by Mundus, a demon his father imprisoned, attacked their home while Vergil was outside reading. Dante was saved by his mother who hid him away but was killed as she searched for Vergil right before Dante's eyes. As a result Dante would live on but shun his demon side and become a bounty hunter who only hunted demons with the blade his father gave him called Rebellion. Vergil was almost killed and seeing his home burning caused him to believe his mother and brother were dead, he would unleash his demonic power and summon his own keepsake, the Yamato, and destroy the demons. This caused him to shun his human side and yearn for power, even more so when he found out Dante was alive and believed his mother sacrificed herself for him. In DMC3 Vergil would seek out a portion of his father's power inside the Force Edge and Dante (The Player) would fight against him in the end, defeating him and causing him to go into the Demon World. While there he fought demons of Mundus for years before being captured and tortured for years eventually breaking and becoming Nelo Angelo who you would kill in DMC1, leading to DMC5 which everyone should play or watch the story. This song captures Vergil's story amazingly. He's a person who was forged in battle and forsook his humanity in order to gain nothing but power, as if he had power then he would have never lost that which he had.

  • @PurpleLugia

    @PurpleLugia

    Indeed. In my perspective, Vergil seems to believe that he *needs* power because achieving "absolute power" (the point where he's the most powerful being in the human and demon worlds) is the only way he can have finally have peace of mind...because at that point no one and nothing can or would even try to hurt him. The real tragedy is that in that narrow-sighted quest for power, for years he forgot what he cared about; it slipped his mind to try to use the strength he already has to preserve and be with what family he has left. At least in DMC5 he got a bit in touch with his human heart, and reflected a bit. We'll see how his "self-therapy" helped him going forward, I guess.

    The part lasting from 14:45 through 16:30 is actually lifting from Nero's theme, "Devil Trigger", Nero being Vergil's son, representing how Nero is responsible for finally ending the cycle of violence between Vergil and his brother Dante, "Unearthing His Light" if you will.

    Fun Fact: All the DMC 5 character themes (Bury the Light, Devil Trigger, Crimson Cloud and Subhuman) all are reactive pieces. The intro atmospheric portions play before you land a hit, and after that, the theme begins. As you land hits, taunt, start combos and gain Style, the theme builds up, but if not, it will loop the verses ("Immoral temptation" and "Inherit the Nightmare" portions for BtL). Once you reach "Apocalyptic," the drums start to kick in, drowning out the voices. It all builds to a crescendo, and once you hit that "Savage" rank, well... Then, I'm a little motivated. That beat hits _hard._ If you go even higher, to "Sick Skills" or "Smokin' Sexy Style!!!," then the title drop hits before looping back to "I am the Storm". Once the battle ends, it starts playing the last few measures of the track, before fading into nothingness. Opinion/Idea: BtL is not just Vergil's theme. I feel as if it encompasses everyone involved. Dante's awakening (the "phoenix's ash in dark" so "divine", so include Lady here for DMC3) and past (the whole bridge, so include Trish here), V's entire deal of his existence (the second verse in general) and Nero's relationship and similarities to Vergil (the whole leit motif with Devil Trigger, especially when you consider the chorus at the end maches one for one with DT's chorus; compare "Bury the Light deep withiiiiiiiin!" and "Embrace the darkness that's within me!", both lyrically and in notation).

    I love this song. Thanks you for reacting to this !! Fun fact : DMC is one of the game (along with Bayonetta) that inspired Hoyoverse to make Honkai Impact. They also very simp for Vergil to the point where you often see Vergil reference in every single of their game (mostly in Genshin Impact) and not just in-game but also in their trailer, concert and web-event as well. - Kazuha’s trailer : there’s a line when he say “the storm is coming”, a reference to “Bury The Light” - 1.9 web event : there’s a line “The storm is approaching” when you venture into the ocean, also a reference to “Bury The Light” - 2020 Genshin Concert : the drum part at the beginning in “Wrath of Monoceros Caeli” is the exactly same as the drum part at the beginning in “Bury The Light” - Ayaka/Keqing/Kazuha/Raiden/Ayato/Xingqiu are the characters with Vergil move set. in DMC fandom, people often made a joke about Vergil evading child support. which completely make sense now consider that he has so many children in Genshin Impact. XD - They even asked you in the survey “Have you ever played the following games ? ” and it had DMC on the list. (Yess, DMC collab please !!)

    I really love the syncopation in the atmospheric build-up phase. It's not _just_ that something dark and quiet is brewing, but that the beats that ping your attention aren't hitting in a way you can rely on. It literally keeps you off your rhythm, apprehensive, waiting for the shoe to drop again. All my favorite Silent Hill instrumental tracks turn this dynamic into the focus of _an entire song._ I find it strangely comforting tbh. I'd describe the mood as, 'stay frosty' -- chill, but active, almost like a flow-state. The vocals in the verses are super modern, but I could absolutely see _the chorus_ fitting square into your operatic style, minus the heavy metal harshness. These big, full-throat, tidal wave notes swinging the whole song around. The opera sample you put at the start of your videos made it easy to imagine you adapting the chorus in a different register :P I'm completely with you on the last bit! The ASMR/lone guitar feels almost like it's asking for sympathy -- _from himself, maybe._ To acknowledge all that pain rather than stuffing it underneath his hunger for POWER. Maybe it's the simplicity, the key, or something more technical that's going over my head, but then when the electric guitar and the power trip comes back in, it's contextualized AGAINST the dirge, the pain. He's the biggest badass in the room, he's gonna cut a hole in the fucking planet if he has to, but he's gonna have tears streaming down his face. Not hysterical, just -- big enough to finally _acknowledge the pain._

    I could talk about this song literally all day. It's the epitome of game music and what it can do. I'm not saying no composer for a game can beat this song, since I think anything is possible, but I am saying it would need to be one hell of a job to get even close to Bury the Light let alone surpass it in both just auditory aesthetic and in representing a character so well while also straddling a line where it can be applied to SO many other characters and listeners. It is my favorite song of all time lol. A cool thing I heard was that this was going to be this composer's last song for Vergil (I haven't played the game yet so I don't know the ins and outs of why, if it's something in game or out of game, etc), so this song was like the final send off for him. It's like if an epitaph were music. A funny thing too is that people have overlayed this song to stuff Raiden Shogun related, and there are a ton of Inzuma characters who fight or have similar motives to Vergil. Even NPCs. The last bit is just a bit of fluff and has nothing to do with the song, but in a way Vergil and this song feels transient across a lot of media. It's sorta amazing.

    Deeply insightful and comprehensive breakdown as always, Marco! I particularly appreciated your focus on the vocals, since the vast majority of other analyses I've listened to of Bury the Light have been (understandably!) much more preoccupied with the complex instrumentation going on here. Your comparison to Verdi at the end there in terms of super-intense, brassy and angry male vocal lines in arias was one I hadn't thought of before, but I'm kicking myself for missing it now! I'd love to hear you and Mr. Borba talk through the vocal side of things at some point; that would be a fascinating conversation. Cheers!

    Another absolute banger of a video that I’m late for! Casey and Victor absolutely knocked it out of the park with this one. So I’m a mod on the DMC subreddit, and a couple years ago we got to do an Interview live stream with Casey and Ali which was an absolute trip and was amazing to pick their brains on how they Made Devil trigger, their experiences writing it, and so on. Absolutely amazing folks. And Alex Moukala did an amazing interview with Casey last year after breaking down this song. I HIGHLY recommend checking it out because Casey goes into alot with his thought process in making this song. A big piece that I remember is that he wanted to leave his mark on the DMC series. Because he was sure that this song would be the last one he makes for it, he wanted to make it something that would basically immortalize him within the series. I don’t think it was worded exactly like that, But it was close, and I think he definitely succeeded. So amazing video, absolutely killer work, and I’m so happy you love the song as much as we do. If you want something more fun I’d definitely recommend checking out Devil Trigger. Nero’s battle theme where his wife Ali did the vocals and absolutely KILLED IT. A lot more fun and high energy and if I were to give my Armchair music critic, 0 years of musical experience, breakdown of it. Where Bury the Light is about Vergil’s desperation to lock away his human half and become the true embodiment of power he desires to be and have the strength to do what must be done. Devil Trigger is a lot More on the other end. With Nero being Vergil’s son, Nero has similar power to him. And it’s about Nero, rather than locking away some side of him, he embraces it. Embraces the darkness within him while trying not to lose himself and using his anger and frustration to protect those he loves. Hell, Even Dante’s theme has some fun themes that also coincide with Vergil’s. Where it’s seemingly about how Dante tries to reject the demon side of him because of his hatred of demons for what happened to his family, and learning that he needs to harness and use it but not let it take over him. But that’s just what I think. I’d love to hear your opinions on it all! If not in a video, then I’d love to like discuss in replies to this if you end up listening to them what you think if you have the time or want to do so. If not, totally understandable. Keep up the amazing work, and have a great day!

    I don't remember exactly when was the first time I listened to this song, but from that forward, instantly, it became my favorite song of all time. And I'm a very eclectic guy when it come to music, so that means something. And I'm not joking when I say I've heard it ( at this point ) over 500 times, 'cause there is something about this music energy that moves me forward in life in a way that I can't explain. Especially the verse '' Descending misery, destiny chases time. Disappear into the night, lost shadows left behind. Obsessions pulling me, fading I've come to take what's mine. '', it simply get me to 180BPM in seconds, specially with Victor's outstanding vocal ( A huge pride to the Brazilian people having someone like him singing this song, I should say ). Absolute timeless masterpiece. Great reaction Marco!

    Fun fact: Casey Edwards (The one who sang or the vocalist).. has been with DMC 1-5, certainly loved being the one to voice or assigned to Vergil. Which in this music Casey Edwards Thought this was his last song in the game or enterprise, So he pulled out his all. Basically this is a love letter from himself.
