"The song was begun, and the chord pattern was developed, before a woman's name entered the song. And I knew it was a song about Montreal, it seemed to come out of that landscape that I loved very much in Montreal, which was the harbour and the waterfront and the sailors' church there, called Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secour, which stood out over the river, and I knew that there're ships going by, I knew that there was a harbour, I knew that there was Our Lady of the Harbour, which was the virgin on the church which stretched out her arms towards the seamen, and you can climb up to the tower and look out over the river, so the song came from that vision, from that view of the river. At a certain point, I bumped into Suzanne Vaillancourt, who was the wife of a friend of mine, they were a stunning couple around Montreal at the time, physically stunning, both of them, a handsome man and woman, everyone was in love with Suzanne Vaillancourt, and every woman was in love with Armand Vaillancourt. But there was no... well, there was thought, but there was no possibility, one would not allow oneself to think of toiling at the seduction of Armand Vaillancourt's wife. First of all he was a friend, and second of all as a couple they were inviolate, you just didn't intrude into that kind of shared glory that they manifested. I bumped into her one evening, and she invited me down to her place near the river. She had a loft, at a time when lofts were... the word wasn't used. She had a space in a warehouse down there, and she invited me down, and I went with her, and she served me Constant Comment tea, which has little bits of oranges in it. And the boats were going by, and I touched her perfect body with my mind, because there was no other opportunity. There was no other way that you could touch her perfect body under those circumstances. So she provided the name in the song." - Leonard Cohen
In 2006, the Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) found Suzanne Verdal, who inspired the song. She was a dancer and travelled around the world, but in the '90s, she hurt her back and was living in a homemade camper in Venice Beach (California) when they found her. She revealed that Cohen lost touch with her by the time he recorded it, although she did meet him briefly after one of his concerts in the '70s, where he commented that she gave him a beautiful song. Responding to Cohen's quote, "It's not just the copulation. It is the whole understanding that we are irresistibly attracted to one another, and we have to deal with this. We are irresistibly lonely for each other, and we have to deal with this, and we have to deal with our bodies and with our hearts and souls and minds, and it's an urgent appetite," Verdal said, "I was the one that put the boundaries on that because Leonard is actually a very sexual man and very attractive and very charismatic. And I was very attracted to him, but somehow I didn't want to spoil that preciousness, that infinite respect that I had for him, for our relationship, and I felt that a sexual encounter might demean it somehow. That precious relationship produced a great piece of art."

🫖🍊🍊 "She feeds you Tea and Oranges that come all the way from China.." "Suzanne" and I go back to 1967. A good friend of mine in college happened to look just like Judy Collins and could sing much the same. "Margaret" would sit on the dorm room floor, legs crossed, long black hair cascading, guitar in hand and regaling us with sweet folk songs, "Suzanne" among them (her personal favorite). I had not "met" Neil Diamond yet. I suspect after I loved the song so much from Judy Collins and Margaret that I possibly heard Neil's rendition (recorded in 1971) on the radio. Neil's hauntingly seductive version mesmerized this 22 year old (in 1971). Pretty sure the album "Stones" was my first purchased. There's so much back story to "Suzanne " and in Doug's commentary, under 'show more', the explanations by Cohen and CBC Canada essay are quite sufficient in my opinion. I just love the song! The rhythm and cadence are hypnotic and draw me closer...as does the guitar and percussion and finally Neil's ever smooth and melodic voice. Doug, in his genius way, remade this video of 8 years ago using images from the older and added new, updated images to make it stunningly beautiful. Doug is a Video Artist 😊...well done! 🫖🍊🍊

It opens the secret of life bringing peace, abolishing strife.”_ Thank you Louise, a viewer recently placed some comments, positive ones, on the previous version. When I accessed it, and viewed it I felt terribly disappointed. Firstly, it was in the old 4:3 aspect (square) as opposed to the current 16:9 aspect (widescreen). I _had_ to update it, even though it meant wiping out the 1.4 million views. 😞

Thanks Louise. You are blessed with the gift of being able to read music and play a piano/organ. Sadly, I ducked when these were being handed out. However, thankfully, this shortcoming has not impacted on my love of music. Lacking in technical appreciation, I simply love good/great music for its own sake. There is an Australian singer I'd like you to listen to. He is terribly underrated and obviously did not possess the skills, ability or drive of Neil Diamond. His name, Kevin Johnson. Neil at least put singing into his version. I listened to Cohen's version, it was like he was reading the words, instead of singing them. Neil's version, hands down, the best version.
Iam 84 & I still listen to Neil Diamond and get taken back to my youth. What a trip!!!

I first heard this song in 1972 sung by Tom Rapp with the group Pearls Before Swine. Then I discovered the version buy Judy Collins. I finally ran across Leonard Cohen and listened to the original. Regardless who sang it, this song resonated deep in my soul since I was 16. I am presently 67. About 8 years ago I found the Neil Diamond version., which I consider the best rendition by far. I listen to it constantly, sometimes 4-5 tikes a day. Still brings the emotions out in me. Love this song.

I've always loved this song, and actually heard the LC version first many years ago as a young person and remember loving it - but hardly remember it now. Because once I heard the version of ND.... well, as always...it DID it for me! I was always attracted to the mysteriousness of this song, with no clue as to what it actually meant, excepting what I could interpret in my (not so clever) mind. Didn't know it was actually based on a real person, just thought it was an imaginary beautiful woman with whom the singer had a kind of spiritual-cum-physical attraction. You threw more light on it for the first time with the story in your description - thank you so much Doug! The images you used are so wonderful, I specially liked the Jesus ones. Her words "I didn't want to spoil that preciousness, that infinite respect that I had for him, for our relationship, and I felt that a sexual encounter might demean it somehow" are so very respect-worthy and relatable. But one still feels that particular sadness of unfulfilled attraction, love - whatever one wishes to call that thing that consumes people at some point in their life.

Thanks for your comments Nas, much appreciated. Lovely to hear from you. Unlike you, Neil's cover was the first I heard of this song, assumed he wrote the lyrics until I checked the album cover. Did get around to listening to Leonard Cohen's version, but like you, Neil's cover is my preference... by a country mile. You are alone in being rather confused by the lyrics of this song. There's Suzanne, then there's Jesus and his apostles. Confused. That said, all that I am able to do is have my images reflect the words of the song. My pleasure, Nas. Must confess that I do feel a tinge of sadness for Suzanne Verdal. Yes, it was the life she chose; that she fell into. When all is said and done, I feel that Leonard Cohen, whose career was virtually created on this beautiful song, which made him a wealthy man, could have assisted Suzanne financially. So glad you love the images. The images of the beautiful lady, a Chilean by birth, but migrated to Australia when she was 4 years of age. She is now living in Los Angeles. @@NeilDiamondCentral thank you for taking the time to reply. I was a Neil Diamond fan from the first time I heard him as a kid in the Seventies , Leonard Cohen was a bit later in the early Eighties. Even then it took me years to go deeper into my appreciation of his talent, my circle of friends had to be educated by me, we weren't cool enough to "get" him. I used Jeff Buckley's amazing rendition of Hallelujah as an "introduction". Neil is on another level and so humble, considering he is one of the all time greats of modern music, up there with Burt Baccarat, Hal David, Paul Anka and Neil Sedaka all underrated or not known by the younger generations. (I laugh that I said that, because I will be 57 this month and can't escape the truth that I to am getting on a bit). I will share this quick little story with you and leave you be. In 1985 on an August Bank Holiday, a friend and I went to a coastal town in England, called Clacton on Sea and found ourselves in a Pub, where the entertainment was a tribute act, two guys with a sound system and a guitar. They basically did 90 minute set, I had a few beers as did most people and up until my life thus far, the atmosphere was bloody amazing and the whole Pub was in the hands of Neil Diamond's imitators. That is one day I can never forget. It was a perfect day for me, My chum was driving so couldn't drink too much but he was just as enthralled as the other patrons. Every time I hear any Neil Diamond, my brain defaults me to that day.

Sincere thanks and appreciation to Louise Poole for her research into the "Tea and Oranges" reference in this song - *TEA AND ORANGES* "Back story of Constant Comment Tea” Constant Comment tea, (Bigelow Tea Co.), served by Suzanne Vaillancourt to Leonard Cohen in the early 60's, was created in 1945 by Ruth Campbell, the grandmother of Cindi Bigelow who is the current CEO of the company. Ruth Campbell pioneered the concept of the specialty tea. In 1945 tea in America was either Black tea or Green tea. Ruth wanted something more. She came upon an old Colonial recipe for tea made in stone containers with sweet spices and orange peel. Ruth went to her kitchen and worked with Black tea and sweet spices and orange peel until she made a tea that satisfied her. Serving it to her friends she was overjoyed at the many positive compliments. She named the tea "Constant Comment" tea. It took some years for Constant Comment tea to rise in general popularity and sales, but it did reach a huge success and thereby the Bigelow Tea Company was founded on this one special tea and it is still their focus and top selling tea. Ruth Campbell died in 1966, the same year Judy Collins recorded "Suzanne" with the famous line: "She feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China". Sadly, Ruth didn't hear the beautiful iconic song Leonard Cohen wrote with her Constant Comment tea in the lyrics. About that famous line from the song... Cindi Bigelow tells that the tea and oranges do _NOT_ come from China. It has been said that Leonard Cohen added that for the mystique and romanticism. The tea actually comes from a mountain top in Sri Lanka - always has and always will. The origin of the oranges is top secret as is the tea recipe.
