I saw him in 1978 at Hampton Roads coliseum, and remember a beautiful young lady ask me if I would walk with her out , because her bf and her had words and he left her alone and she was so beautiful I was so smitten I didn’t even ask her name or for her number , I’ll never forget that I was 18 now I’m 61 that alone should tell you how awesome she was , I hope she sees this and remembers , I’m sorry for being the second guy that night that fell short I have regretted it ever since !!!!! Hope life has been good to you , I hear this song and it brings that night back !!!!🙏🏻😘

The yearning in that voice. Man, what I could do with a voice like that. And what he sings about, nature at its most elemental. And this guy is the anti- boaster. The anti-ego. The humble songwriter, "gee maybe I should sing my own songs." ? ?? Duh!

My favorite Seabird. My grand father a Sea Captain, told us, when away, a Seaguld would send us greetings. When , my mother in Denmark moved to her Senior home. I did a painting off a Seagul at Redondo Pier CA. Sent it for their Dining room so she could look at it every day. She past a year ago. My brother told me , they kept the painting in hers, and memory off my visits. My grand father would be pleased. Thank you for the music.🇩🇰🇺🇸🗽💌

A masterpiece of a song Neil diamond was reaching his peak as a songwriter and performer at the time this song was written just before his legendary hot August night concerts

I have always enjoyed this song, one of many by Neil Diamond, and in the days of my early 30's. What wonderful times to have been blessed with.... YES!

One of the very best of this incredible singer/songwriters' songs. Saw him in concert in 1971.....and it was just a fantastic experience. He was just reaching his pinnacle! Love his music.

When I listem to this song now I can only think of Jamie and Claire from Outlander...how she went through the stones and back in time to find the love of her life. Through many trials and tribulations they lose each other but are reunited after 20 years apart. The lyrics fit their love story beautifully.

The “stones” are her hard thoughts, or hard things to think about. The basic theme is this woman he loves so deeply, having a difficult time with her issues, or maybe even loving anyone, But the two of them attempting to negotiate thru life anyway.

I interpreted this song and it`s lyrics as the pain and suffering endured by a loved one whilst their partner and deeply loved soul mate was being treated for a severe mental health condition in a psychiatric ward. The most powerful and emotional lyrics to support this are " I`ll be there to let the sun in. " as a response by way of total devotion and dedication if a good day or even a fleeting moment were to come her way. The most profound simile, however, i.m.o. is the line " being lost is worth the coming home." Once again displaying the aforementioned traits. The meaning of these lyrics being that no matter how long the loved one is perceived as being lost if she were to wake and have a good day, hour or even a minute whereby she were back to her wonderful, glorious self then all the heartache, anguish and suffering endured by both parties would make that moment truly wonderful and all the more valuable. Obviously they are very much in love but I don`t think their love story was the inspiration behind the song. I think the song is quite clearly about how a couple react to great adversity and attempt to overcome an insurmountable obstacle that has been placed in their lives path by fate. I cannot be convinced otherwise.

I don’t agree. Doesn’t have to be about mental illness. My husband of 30 years died almost 8 months ago. It feels more about finding me again during this whole process, the initial rollercoaster of the devastating loss. It’s a gentle lullaby.

@@carenwierenga6520 Sorry, James, but I don't think the song is about mental illness. Caren has convinced me that Neil wrote it about her husband.
