I've heard this song COUNTLESS times! I'm lying in bed listening to it, and it Dawn's on me the meaning of the song! I jumped up & looked for the lyrics! The 1st video describes a young man's distant love. It was nice, but I just didn't think that was it! Then, I saw this, but didnt realize it was gonna be a video. This is EXACTLY what I saw in my dawn of meaning, except I didnt think that I was also the man in between because Jesus was dying for my sins, too! YES! That's IT! And, the video was PERFECT, ESPECIALLY the pic of Jesus & Magdalene embracing each other, with her arms around his legs, and the one where Jesus appears to her FIRST, outside of the tomb! I KNO this is long, but I HAD to connect! BIGHUG

My favorite is "Summer Love" cause its like listening to the story of me and my sweetheart💞 we met in the beginning of summer and was married for 42 years. . . . Paul , I believe we all have that ... IF only we choose to receive it - each and every day ; it is all around us ... again , if only we choose to see it . I bought the 'Serenade' album from a friend of my big brother in August '75 (16th , it was a Saturday I recall so clearly) just two months after buying my first N.D. album - the incomparable ' HOT AUGUST NIGHT '. Serenade was SO affecting to me in it's myriad majesty, musical excellence and the suavety of it's ( almost ' completeness' - I always thought that it's 8 song duration was two songs short of perfection ) tastefulness . No one else has even began to approach this master-work in my opinion ; ' Lady Magdalene' has always been THE song that I can only listen to a few times in a year . Too much truth for this soul to hear - both then as a 14 year young boy ... and now , four and a half decades later . I was blessed to witness ' Neil Diamond ' in concert 25 times here in the U.K. from 1977 to '17 and twice at The Greek Theatre in August '12 for the last two concerts of his 5 - night stand , celebrating ' 40 years ' since ' HOT AUGUST NIGHT ' . He was the ONLY one who drew you back - every time . Be well .

He with his sweet voice accompanied me in my sorrows and joys, I did not stop listening to him, how I do it until today I am 60 years old. Beautiful and unforgettable memories give those fleeting moments of light and loving innocence give one of the happiest stages of my life. When listening to the genius of Neil Diamond on this song. It takes me to military hospital wards of wounded men in their beds wondering what would happen to them when they are finally released. As they lay side by side in their hospital beds. Many will be wondering of what's to become of them. For they are the men in between. In a sense Mary Magdelene was nursing the wounds of our lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And she was by his side as she witnesses firsthand the Torture of being Whip, being Nailed to the Cross and having a Reef of Thorns place on his head. She was there at his resurrection to witness first-hand the life after death that will await us all. Brilliant!

Wonderful song! Unusual for its length, it probably did not get much airplay back in 1974. The orchestration was by Jimmie Haskell. I love the grandeur and the various musical figures that appear between the singing. One of my favorites!

None that I remember here in north eastern Australia. Only the title track of the album did. As a 19 year old, I bought the album. After my first listen, this track possessed me. I have listened to it countless times in the 49 years since. There has not been another song recorded that has impacted me they way these lyrics did. And after 49 years, I'm buggered if I know why.

J'ai découvert Neil Diamond ,au detour,en rentrant dans une maison de disques ,à l'époque j'avais 14 ans en 69 ,j'ai entendu une de ses chansons , je me suis dit que c'est ça que je nommnais musique depuis longtemps ,que je venais de trouver. J'ai acheté tout de suite et jusqu'à aujourd'hui 2020 , je m'incline devant l'homme profond et talentueux que je me permets d'appeler Neil . Dan Casey... (French) I discovered Neil Diamond, at the turn, when I returned to a record company, at the time I was 14 in 69, I heard one of his songs, I told myself that that's what I had been naming music for a long time, which I had just found. I bought right away and until today 2020, I bow to the deep and talented man I allow myself to call Neil. Thank you for the image illustration of this wonderful song of meditation.

Serenade...like Hot August Night, I really wish someone had approached Neil to convince him that recording on film the making of Serenade and filming in studio of every track would have been a musical documentary that would have been a benchmark in his career, if only Hot August Night had been filmed the way we hear it from the Album how magnificent that would have been for fans and for Diamond History....Lady Magdelene, lyrically and musically is a treat, I have the Quadraphonic recording in my collection I just don't have the compatible Turntable, but surround sound system does a good job nether the less....thanks Dan.

I don't know if you ever heard or read that at the 10 - night , sold - out stand that became ' HOT AUGUST NIGHT ' in August '72 , no - one ( not Neil , nor his then record company , 'MCA' , nor whomever was 'at the table' wanted to be liable for the '$ 25,000's per night' , director and film - crew bill ) ; that is about $155,000's per night at today's monies (13.03.21) so no - one did ... and the moment was lost . Neil publicly stated a few year's ago that ... "not filming ' HOT AUGUST NIGHT' was one of my biggest regrets " . As I have stated in other ' threads ' ... I have it on the entirely trustworthy word of a Neil fan ' in excelsiis ' , a person with over 350 N.D. concerts to their name , that some bootleg film of 'HOT AUGUST NIGHT' is in existence . . . And they would know . I concur wholeheartedly with you about that masterwork that is ' Serenade ' . To be able to see Neil , Tommy Catalono ( so hardly ever mentioned let alone fully appreciated ) as an integral part of that ' t r I n i t y ' of superb N.D album's - ' HOT AUGUST NIGHT , ' Jonathan Livingston Seagull ' and of course. ' Serenade ' as Neil's producer ; mentions of 'greatness' should also be lauded on Lee Holdridge ( about 23 at the recording of ' HOT AUGUST NIGHT ' ) who with Neil , Tommy and ALL therein co - created a sound like no - other , before or since . Not all recording experiences are necessarily happy ones it needs to be remembered. I recall reading in that late 80's unauthorised biography of Neil, ' Solitary Star ' , that he ( Neil) insisted on 30 - plus run throughs with full orchestra on tracks that were deemed to be " in the can " by those both behind the monitor and ' in the know ' ... but that was Neil at that specific moment in time , striving for what ' he ' could hear in his heart and head . . .

@@dancasey1370 I was referring to the symbol of Christ..in my Catechism, I learned we were put on this earth- for a reason..God has His plans for all of us. It is our job to find that reason and show it forth..our talents are that reason...see, how perfect Or close to perfection ND songs all how he presents them, and he wrote them too.. I believe that is what this means..or we can all become like either man on the side of Christ. Symbolism is another way to perceive the story. THANK YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTS..

This song is the most wonderful song that ever to keep listen to it lift up my spirit so much when he signs about the man in-between to know what the man in-between gave up for allowing all of us to be here up until this day

I enjoyed your visual interpretation of this wonderful song. It’s one of my top favorite Neil Diamond albums and I listened to it over and over again years ago. Neil’s music continues to move me and your video adds a nice touch to this very introspective and metaphoric lyric.

Thanks Dan for your equally wonderful reply. I got to see Neil Diamond perform I think five times in concert over about a 15 or 20 year span. He’s the one singer and songwriter I admire the most. Take care and thanks again for your contribution to Neil Diamond and his music.

Hermosa canción cantada con mucho amor y respeto a nuestro a señor Jesucristo, solo tengo una duda: a los de religión Judía se les permite hacer referencia a Jesús y no solo en esta melodía sino también en el disco de villancicos navideños, a mi no me molesta al contrario me gusta oir su hermosa voz, y lo he escuchado desde mis 15 años.
