Thanks for your comments Ruth. While spring cleaning (it is spring in Australia), I happened on a DVD containing this interview. On running a check on KZread, I discovered, to my surprise that no one had uploaded it. It is indeed truly refreshing to see a superstar, in the true sense of the word, being ever so humble and down-to-earth; so unspoiled by fame. Heard this song on the radio a couple of times back in 1971, and I was hooked. I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me..._ _"... I got an emptiness deep inside and I've tried but it won't let me go..."_ _The pain, the tortured cries. This was even more evident in 'I Am... I Said (Reprise)'. Neil's voice, his sincerity and pain, tugged at my heartstrings; he touched my soul. I felt his loss, his pain, for I too, was experiencing those emotions (The story's the same one). Compare this humble, wonderful artist.. this gifted song writer to say the arrogant Kanye West whose songs are a passing fancy soon to be left in the Dustbins of history...While sweet Caroline, Kentucky Woman, I Am I Said etc... are 50 years old and still played, listened and covered by others on a regular basis and still will be 50 years from now. Saw 'The Jazz Singer' in South Africa when l was 18 yrs old and l was smitten by this beautiful man❤ Watching interviews with his smooth and sexy voice makes me feel like my soul knows him. Great interview. What a lovely human being producing some of the most memorable songs in my life’s journey. I remember when I was living in the US for a few years walking around a CVS one morning and Sweet Caroline came on in the background music and the whole store erupted into song !! It was magical. Thank you Neil. I never missed his concerts when he came to the UK and was privileged to be there at what turned out to be his last one ever although we did not know it at the time. I send him love.

It was the first time that I heard him talk so well of Marcia and his highs and lows of being in love and the experiences with her during the sixteen years at that time. As for Neil being so comfortable with Barbara Walters, it is obvious that as a consequence of his four-year sabbatical and multiple sessions with his psychoanalyst that Neil emerged a more confident and relaxed person. A great musician and singer/songwriter. Such a humble man. Neil Diamond and John Denver were always my favorites. I remember as a teen putting his music in the record player and cranking it up in the evenings as my mom and I would listen to him while we fixed the evening dinner. Dad would come in from work and just look at us and let us know he could hear the music clear into the garage as he got out of the car. Lol! I asked him once if he enjoyed what he heard. He said yes! By then the album was on the last song and dinner was on the table. Some nights we ate on trays and watched TV. But always Neil’s music made life seem better, even sweeter. I have a GG-Grandmother Caroline, and my GG-Grandfather loved her so much because she was the sweetest woman he had ever met. And everyone called her Sweet Caroline. I sing that song and think of them long ago. Thanks Neil! God bless you wherever you are right now. You made the world a more beautiful place to live in.

Having had the privilege of seeing the new musical "A Beautiful Noise" on Broadway last week, I'm now realizing that some of the elements seem to be taken from this interview. The musical's backdrop is an elderly Neil speaking to a therapist, who asks him many of the same questions that Barbara did in this interview. Wonderful to watch, thank you for posting it.

I must be a fan. I play and own all his music on vinyl and CD. Also, 1 concert on VHS and DVD. then an episode of the 1965 TV show Mannix, Were Neil played himself. I have been to 4 concerts, since the 1980's.

Infinite thanks for your work. Your songs are ethereal, deep and at the same time so real, so full of feelings. I listen to your songs because they make me feel more human in this current, unreal and almost technologically precise world. Sometimes I cry when I listen the song I am I said, and let the tears distort the vision of the space around me, and I can really travel inside my heart and soul, it's an intense energy for just a fraction of seconds.. .. then I fly back to reality, and I think that I am lucky to be able to experience these feelings ...and thank you, Niel Diamond, so much for that.

As a songwriter, multi-instrumental musician, and classically trained singer, I totally get what Neil meant about wanting _others_ to perform his songs. I agonize over getting my lyrics just right, and the best way to serve the _songs_ would be to match them with singers whose voices are just right _for_ them. Side Note: When I was growing up, "The Jazz Singer" soundtrack album was a regular fixture in my house, and as a result, Neil Diamond is one of my biggest influences as a songwriter...particularly as a lyricist. It's a shame there aren't more like him in _today's_ music market.

Im a fan since '71, when I was ten, and noticed I Am I Said on the radio. And the song not only held its own against songs like Riders on the Storm, Whats Going On, Youve Got A Friend, Wont Get Fooled Again, just an embarrassment of riches that were all out about the same tine, it spoke to me personally because I was a loner, a skinny frog of kid with the iq of a king, who didn't really fit anywhere. Im now a songwriter, with live material here on KZread, just starting to get occasional gigs at the ripe old age of 62. Definitely doing it my way. And sometimes when I see how small my audience (and group of friends) is, I think to myself, "I am...I said , to no one there.

The fact that at the tender age of 10 that "I Am... I Said" had that impact on you speaks volumes of the person you truly are. I believe you to be, possibly as a consequence of your early life experiences, a sensitive person and a deep thinker. Film-flam is of no interest to you. “I Am… I Said” had the similar impact on me in 1971 and yes, like you, heard it on the radio. Here are my comments that I placed on our website: _This has to be my absolute favourite Neil Diamond song. Heard this song on the radio a couple of times back in 1971, and I was hooked. I listened intently for the name of the singer and the song, and then headed out to my nearest music store. On arrival at the store, I discovered that this, to me then, unknown singer, had two albums (LPs). One was 'Sweet Caroline' and the other was 'Stones'. I then did something that I had never done before... I purchased not one, but both albums, my purchase being made solely on having heard only one song from this singer. This song so moved me..._ *"... I got an emptiness deep inside and I've tried but it won't let me go..."* The pain, the tortured cries. This was even more evident in 'I Am... I Said (Reprise)'. Neil's voice, his sincerity and pain, tugged at my heartstrings; he touched my soul. I felt his loss, his pain, for I too, was experiencing those emotions (The story's the same one). 🪴🍑🪴 Doug, I am viewing some of your amazing videos, particularly this kind where Neil just talks...mesmerizing. That voice😊. Have to say that no one interviews like Barbara Walters! She was the best. Neil was quite relaxed with her, enjoying the interview....loved the bit about the name "Eice"...funny. Very enjoyable...will continue to look at videos as I can. No bluff or bluster; no hint of arrogance being the superstar that he is. Just as he sings as he speaks ("gravel and potholes"), so too there is no pretence, it's always, just Neil. Thanks for your comments Louise. A wonderful, apt description. I feel Neil is being rather self-deprecating in describing his voice as _"gravel and potholes"._ Humility personified. As you may have discovered, I've been intensively occupied for the past week on my latest upload. Veronica and I attended a concert last Sunday where our granddaughter, Gemma, performed 'Blackbird' on her guitar... *HEAVENLY!* Had an impact on me, so much so that even after we got home I couldn't get the song out of my head. Decided I _had_ to create a video of the song. It was only then, through research, that I discovered the inspiration for the song. Take care, Doug
