Diamond performed this on The Johnny Cash Show, where he explained: "This song was written about a revival meeting I was at in Jackson, Mississippi. I went there because I was curious, and also because I was a college kid who had all the answers - no one was going to teach me anything and I could lay a few answers on them. I sat in the back of this tent meeting and I got really caught up in the music - clapping, the singing - tremendously exciting. After a while I felt something about the people - there was a tremendous yearning, looking for answers. Trying to ease a very hard burden of very rough lives. After a while the music stopped and a preacher walked out. I remember thinking that all the education I had, all the books, all the words, all the learning I went through at college didn't mean anything to these people, I had nothing for them. So I found myself pulling for this man who was about to give them something that I couldn't even begin to give them."

At the time, Neil was criticized for this song- it was perceived by Evangelicals as making fun of Christianity. So Neil came on the show to tell the story of what inspired him to write the song. As you can see he won over the audience!

My girlfriend in high school, her Dad loved Neil Diamond. I bought him a Neil Diamond Greatest Hits on 8 track Quadraphonic. I'm sure he still hated me, but I will never forget the look of pure joy on his face when I gave it to him. I was at an age where Neil was not my cup of tea, always thought he was a little too much,'Over The Top', but that was/is his style. He wrote a lot of great songs, still kickin it today. I saw him on a video a couple weeks ago, said he has Parkinson's and will no longer be touring.

Hi Kathleen! Oh my goodness!! I’ve just come across this, on your U Tube channel. Wonderful.I’ve seen various videos, with your name, and picture posted, as the heading, watched all of them, because they were on Neil Diamond ♦️ ❤. And I will absolutely watch anything, if it’s got Neil Diamond in it.. Absolutely,….everything!! I have often, seen and heard Neil, do his BLSS song, on various videos, but, only in his more mature years. I’ve never seen this one………he being so young, and had me wondering, if mb, a mistake, in year……1970 ??, surely, 1960, as he only looks about 20!! . I have been fan, and admirer of his music, songs, and poetry, and of, the man, himself…..we all had,( I suspect), our own “secret”,”in love”, feeling, about him!! Seriously, he was out on his own,,set apart, from all other, so -called “ glorified songwriters”. Apart from all the comments, and platitudes,…ie…..” easy on the eye”. “ so handsome” “ smoulderingly gorgeous “….if one loved music,( all genres)real, good music 🎼….upon hearing him, ( just once),you knew,” this is different,..a pearl, 100%, pure, and the “poetic, musical, heavenly ,lyrics, just flowed, magically, and effortlessly from within.Stellar( Is that proper word?)You knew, …this was on an entirely different level! I grew up,( 1941), listening to, classical music, and 🎶 songs, as my father had a lovely tenor voice, and so , he had all the old 78,s, of the world’s famous, classical singers,of that time. Ist,…(according to my father)…Enrico Caruso,2nd, Beniamino Gili, 3rd, Jussi Bjorling,, and Richard Tauber, referred to,as The Golden Voice, Of The World 🌎 Of Romance. He was not rated, as an opera singer, but became, so popular,on the big stage, and music 🎶 halls.of the time, ..he was asked to perform, in various operettas, ..to huge acclaim, he had the most beautiful melodious voice, songs ,such as: Roses OfPicardy, Birds Songs At Eventide,Serenade From The StudentPrince,You Are My Hearts delight, and my own favourite, of his: We Are in love With You,My Heart And I. Such wonderful 🎶 music 🎵 ,of long ago.❤❤❤ As years passed, my repertoire, became varied, and extended, Everly Brothers, for harmony, and guitar extraordinar,, Righteous Brothers,Simon, and Garfunkel,Matt Munro, Frank Sinatra, and of course…Andrea Bocelli, of the more recent years. But, when Neil came along, .. it was the early 70,s, I think, before I got to hear him, Song, Song Blue, Crackling Rosie, Kentucky Woman, and Holly Holy, think, ,as everything. , ,as were the first, I heard, prob on radio, and oh! my goodness!!, I was wholly, and entirely captivated, and captured….forever!! Old type tapes, ℹ procured , through my wonderful son, and eventually cd,s…..wonderful.I was eventually, “within the clutches of Mr Neil Diamond.❤❤.It’s hard to pick a favourite as everything he’s done, is just magnificent.Comes to mind…Solitary Man, I Am I Said, and Brooklyn Roads, are so poignant. One particular, one, from early years, I had on my tape, caught my attention….Canta Libra…tremendous, heartfelt, and soul touching. He sang it in part English, and either Spanish, or Mexican.Absolute masterpiece. Had it on both tape, and cd, but cassette player , stopped playing,it was old, perfect condition,, tidy, neat, size and played tapes cd,s, and radio. My daughter, lent me ,her own cassette/ radio , for good while, but ℹ returned it to her, as would surely wear it out listening to Neil’s songs. I never replaced , that lovely little cassette/ radio player, as illness, visited our home, and my husband became victim of the debilitating Parkinson’s Disease, just like Neil, is now battling. Poor man. My husband was only 50 years old, when diagnosed, and lived for almost 30 years with it.He became full- time care, for last 10/ 12 years of his life.I looked after him, at home, my as I was quite fit and healthy, and am grateful, The Lord, allowed me to do so.He died quite suddenly, from massive heart attack….no previous, or obvious heart problem’s, even with PD…just his time had come..suddenly,and without warning, and no suffering, ..in hindsight, after the sudden loss, and grief abated, it was a blessing, as he had lived with, and bore it ,with great dignity, for such a long .time. He died,..24thDecember, 2009, the day before Christmas Day. I have been a widow now, for 15 years. When COVID raised its ugly head, and almost destroyed the world 🌍, and everyone in it, my wonderful family,( during lockdown), gifted me with an IPAD….I’d never possessed one, before then, they wanted to be able to keep, in touch, with me,(God Bless them), and so, that IP saved me ! I once again, was able to reconnect with my youth. All the wonderful music 🎶, of the 50,s 60,s 70,s and 80,s, and more!! and hear all the songs, I’ve never heard, as well as the “oldies “, of Neil’s vast repertoire!. The later years….Taproot Manuscript,(genius), Tennessee Moon Album, ( maybe, incorrect title), but had a duet , with Neil, and Waylon Jennings, singing….Tennessee Moon,on it, and other lovely songs. Melody Road…..another masterpiece, much older, in this, but the lyrics, 💜 ❤️🩹 heartbreakingly soulful. So so many masterpieces, couldn’t begin to……Since having my IPAD,, I’ve started to write some comments, just a few, as I never learned to type, and now,….at age , and with arthritic, hands, and fingers, I “TYPE”, with one arthritic index finger, and can imagine, how long that takes!! Totally inexperienced and Technologically, ignorant!!So ,everything, and anything goes wrong, and I have to start again. This is first comment, I’ve done on Neil didn’t feel adequate enough, in my phrasing, and to do him rightful justice… how could one??, but however, here we are!Almost forgot, travelled to Dublin, Ireland 🇮🇪 in 1993/94, to see Neil, in our famous Croke Park , Stadium. it was a gloriously warm August evening, packed to capacity he was dressed all in white, and later changed inside multi coloured outfit. Magical evening, and a tremendous performance by Neil, The crowd, were ecstatic, and Neil did 3 encores.!! Best night of my life!! The song: “Canta Libre”, he performed, on that night ,also,…superb. I have never seen, or heard it on any video, on U Tube, now, but I had it on my old ( missing tape)…80,s, I would think, and titled………The Best Years Of Our Lives. I don’t know if you are still posting on U Tube……………long time ago, it obviously was a major hit, ( he had so many like that…not hits) Maybe Neil Diamond International Channel. Such a pity……… a rare piece of music………typical Neil, nothing like anything’s, been heard before, or again. At 83 years old, I am in awe of this wonderful human being, this once in a lifetime, special humble, man, master of his “ craft”, absolutely 💯 and unequivocally,a genius in our midst, for his artistry, in songwriting, song, and poetic lyrics,he literary turned poetry, into song 🎶 and visa versa. Talk about Jesus, walking amongst men………he is likened to a Messiah, a Jewish Messiah, with all he has poured forth, musically upon this sometimes ungrateful, ignorant world. In my humble opinion, he has been underrated and virtually ignored musically, by a great number of musically ignorant people I am so sorry about his illness, and pray , that his indelible 🎤 musical skill, will sustain him, and the Lord’s Blessing. You are a giant, among men, Neil 💎 ♦️ Diamond. Forgive such a long missive, Kathleen, I get carried away……… and why wouldn’t I, with the subject -in - hand persona, and ICON!! Thank you for posting such a jewel.❤❤❤❤. My regards, admiration and heavenly blessings to you Neil, and to your lovely wife, and family. Molly. From. Ireland 🇮🇪 ,

Elvis was a whoremonger who continued to cheat on his wife on a daily basis! That was his character and I don't really care about how well he sang; it is the character of a person I look at.
Who is here like me listening to this beautiful song in 2022!
....And he just wanted to be only a song writer, originally! He is very gifted in that, however he is so incredibly talented in singing and performing. 🙌 Thank you Neil for sharing with us all of your gifts!! 🙏 Praying for you now in living w/your Parkinson's. I too am living and coping with an incurable illness. One day at a time and daily prayer are my coping mechanisms.

My day is not complete without watching and listening to Neil's songs....luv ya, Neil....

Thank You Kathleen! Talk about two good Song Writers together!!!
I have learn to heal my soul with music thank you for your Beautiful songs wow
Wow.. I'm a new fan.. never knew he was that soulful of a man.. loving this track

Love it….the interview! The opening song also!
Classic musician! Amazing talent. 😎
Neil Diamond signed a contract to make several albums one year, I don't recall how many. And signed that each album would have one #1 hit. Not only did he MEET the contract he exceeded it. THAT fellow has to be the most confident writer ever!
I am a new fan. I love his music!
One of the Best renditions of him and his song- the why behind it is wonderful. I love Neil.
47 years later and I still love this guy
When I say how much I love neil for over 50 years..his speech was so awesome when he finally got indicted to rock and roll hall of fame..his music went right thru me, as a kid felt he was singing to me..his music still does, boy i rem seeing this, thank you whoever posted this, really helps me go back in time, music is key to dementia, and from drinking too much concert koolaid, I rem first hearing & feeling classics like brother love , holly holly , Kentucky woman solitary man shiloh etcetcetc, he def inspired so much love even inspired me 2 write poetry
Johnny had everyone on his show, everyone loved him.
This video brought more meaning to the song. He is my all-time favorite singer. I really love his story songs 🥰😍
Decent and full of class. What has happened to this society?
I saw Neil Diamond in Chattanooga sometime prior too 1973. I've loved all his music forever. I've just celebrated my 81 first birthday. I thank God for His goodness. Jeri Whittaker 6/5/2022 Near Athens, Georgia
Love this whole video, especially the Coney Island-Nashville jokes and the monologue! Thank you!!
Neil together with Johnny Cash is a special treat 🎸🎵🎸🎼🎵. I ♥️ it! Thanks for sharing 🌞
Such unique voices…. They don’t make um like this no more..
HE'S ABSOLUTELY THE G.O.A.T. ❣️
This is amazing, those two in one show and then Neil doing Brother Loves Travelling Salvation Show; awesome early performance.
Two absolute legends!!
Stunning man with stunning voice, such a handsome guy, blue eyed diamond

They should have done a TV show with Neil Diamond hosting.
How great was it to see these two legends together, in such a relaxed and friendly setting. You can feel the mutual respect and genuine admiration between these two legends! AWESOME! And how incredible was Neil's performance of BLTSS?!!! Possibly his best ever!! 🔥🔥🔥

This song holds a special place in my heart. My Preacher would start out soft and slow like a small earth quake and when he let go half the valley shook and lives were Saved and Born Again. Love you Neil.

wow. the good old days. 🎸
Thank you so much, Kathleen! This is the first time I have seen this clip! It's just awesome!
Molly. From. Ireland 🇮🇪 ,
a pair off Diamonds
