Nearly 450 students living in hotels as ASU dorms full

ASU says temporary housing is not new but, a year-over-year comparison shows a steady increase. That is due to the university's growing popularity, ASU is projecting a record enrollment this fall semester, with more than 15,000 first-year students on campus. The plan is to have two new dorms built as early as 2024.

If you can and want a campus experience, explore going abroad. It was less than $15k (US) a year to send my son to the UK for university. Wasn’t Oxford or Cambridge, but there are plenty of good smaller schools without the prestige price tag. The EU countries also have some of the same. And housing can be inexpensive if you look hard enough. Public transit is great for getting places. My son has had a wonderful international experience, meeting friends from many countries. He doesn’t regret not going to a state university, and his US friends are a little envious.

i was a freshman during covid so campus was basically empty that year, but this year compared to 2021, i have noticed that campus is just packed. there are people absolutely everywhere, and you can tell that this is the year everybody really is either coming back to campus or coming to campus for the first time. we are seriously overpopulated. the tempe campus alone has over 55,000 students, with 75,000 in person students total and over 130,000 enrolled in either in person or fully online degrees. asu not being able to house freshman when they come to campus is a huge issue, especially when our enrollment numbers are so high as it is. i get they send out so many acceptances to meet an enrollment quota, but they need to understand that it is really possible to exceed expectations, and accidentally take more students than you can handle. more and more students are choosing our programs because of our top business school, incredible research programs and opportunities, we are highly ranked in sustainability and #1 in innovation. asu is really making a name for themselves as a tier 1 research institution. phoenix offers great opportunities for those students as well, with the mayo clinic opening in scottsdale, as well as banner health, who hire college students as medical scribes all the time. we have a good tech industry who offer great internships, as well as we have a ton of sports (NHL, NBA, NFL, WNBA, MLB) and many opportunities for sports journalism and other sports related professions. asu isn't just the "shitty state school" anymore, and they need to realize that because accepting so many students is going to end up doing more harm than good if they keep having housing issues like they have over the last few years. as a student here, and as a tour guide, there is a lot more to be said than just the housing problem. this needs to be addressed and fixed before it gets worse. you might say this is overdramatic, but all problems like this start small and blow out of control.

Not a housing shortage, it’s a funding shortage. The federal government spends less and less on education, including public university dollars. So, increasingly universities must increase enrollment to make up for the shortfall. I don’t know much about forecasting budgets but my guess is these schools aren’t able to predict what funding they’ll receive with enough notice to build additional dormitories. Still, not a good way to operate a university. Also, tell your politicians to support education funding!

Literally hundreds of students here got waitlisted for on campus housing and they told us only weeks before school starts that we should look for off campus places. Luckily I searched for off campus housing when it was a little cheaper early in the summer. My school also said that housing for 2nd years was guaranteed when we were first years and suddenly on their website said they were not offering that anymore. And for off campus apartments its incredibly hard to find a guarantor that makes enough so that your security deposit isn't 2 months worth of rent which many college students can not afford.

It should be illegal to require freshman to live on campus, this is just one example why. My friend was required to when her parents lived walking distance away from campus. It's extortionary. I literally waited to go to asu until I was "too old for dorms" - what they literally told me. I was 19 at the time and just got an apartment with people on an on campus roommate finding board.

These types of student accommodation adds debt to their account. Housing units or shelter should be installed at their University or College grounds, since it is vast, in order to keep them efficient, healthier, secured, and most of all protected from incidents or gun shots. Life protection bullet proof vests are also highly recommendable for safety and protection. The Hotels accommodation breaks the budget of students, wherein accommodation should be at the school, allocated for hassle free school-work/learning lifestyle. Rofl. Universities are growing faster than they can keep up with. Sports money needs to go to dorms it sounds like. So glad my university is massive and has no issues. 85% of the city is college apartments, on top of plenty of dorms. And it's growing. But I went to UF who is well aware of the fact they're insanely popular- and that there'll be 150k people in the city at one time- most all students. Universities that don't keep up need to be looked into. They're like airlines overselling their tickets. Sounds like greediness and funding being handled wrong.
