I decided since this was done. I'd add it up a bit early. This video is insane and all 156 images were hand picked by me this morning finding the best examples of mainly pencils (sketches and prelims), but also some inks, and a few painted things. Enjoy and rest in peace Neal.

He was a nice guy. Was really worried about showing my inks to him, not because he was a great artist (which he was), but because I heard some stories where people showed him their work and he tore them apart or that he was rude. My friend told me to go and talk with him and he would go with me and introduce me. Once I went up there he was busy doing some signings. I am not sure who she was, I am thinking daughter. Either way she told him I wanted my work to be seen. He greeted me and then said sure will look over your work. He took a couple of seconds and then looked up at me and said “You want to be a penciler don’t you?”. I said yes, but I am inking because I have a lot to learn and just not ready for it. He spoke with me and encouraged me to persue it. I will never forget how nice he was with his time and how much I appreciated him taking the time to look over my work. Such a great guy and glad I got a couple of minutes to get to know him.

Neal Adams was the most dynamic composition creating comic book artist that ever graced a comic book page, he excelled endlessly on sending your eye into an eye candy store of his own creation, just a great artist, one you can never tire yourself from appreciating. Some of his Batman episodes were not only thrilling and captivating, they belonged in the best art museums on this planet.

God, how the hell does he do that? It makes me think I should try harder too, but then I think I'm having too much fun just being me, then I realize it's not good enough to be goofy and different. Thanks for making this video. RIP Mr. Neal Adams. The Sketchbook I"ve got is by Vanguard, called Points From a Master Storyteller Neal Adams Sketcgbook.

Thanks for the video. Neal will be missed. His work is really amazing. I met him once and he gave me good advice on how to get better. He was hard on me at first but it’s because he thought I could do better than what I was showing him. It’s sad that he’s gone. That being said, I enjoyed the video.

When Kirby passed away i was still fairly "new" to reading comics. Ofcourse I knew of his impact but just didnt grasp how truly great he was. But now that Neal has passed I get it now. To me Neal was THE guy who redefined comics for modern times. Guys like Byrne, Perez, Buscema took what Neal brought to comics and did their thing but Neal was still at another level. After looking at his work recently with all the tributes I feel like Barry Windsor Smith is in that same mold of Adams. I see a lot of similarities.

Wow I haven't seen his pencils nearly as much and it was eye opening. It's like when I first saw Buscema's sketches, it hurts how good Neal was. I liked your idea of getting 'hit with hot and cold water at the same time'. Sooo true!

In his sketchbook, he talked about "fast sketching" and how it freed him up to push the pose and composition design. We need to remember he was already a seasoned ad artist and the youngest to ever do a realistic newspaper strip, Ben Casey. He just used a regular pencil and shaded on the side IIRC. Probably had the flat side at the tip too for thin/thick ink lines. Rendering the form with shading allowed him to quickly arrange value, and he and the other inkers of that time knew how to finish from layouts, so loose pencils were the norm. Great vid. Great coverage of his legacy, and excellent inks over the master, Rich.

So, it's interesting that you ask if he's using like 3 pencils. Now in NO WAY am I comparing myself to this master, but the last 20ish years of drawing, I used an H for sketching, HB for tonal shades, and a mechanical to add the detail at the end, and got similar results. So I would say, yes, he is using 3 pencils and doing the piece in layers.

37:20 Hold that thought Rich! Lol I'd like to hear where you were going, sounded like some pushing the comic book craft forward! If at the next Patreon Q/A I ask "Explain 37:20" THIS is what I'm talking about! 🤣 On another note, Neal Adams is a great guy I recommend & enjoy all of his interviews. I always dug Adams' process to be fearless from initial sketch to finished, he seemed to just have fun and threw lines down with a master class finish!

I can say it. I think things like variant covers still hurt the market because it has NOTHING to do with the quality of the comicbook or story inside. High selling books are mainly based on that stuff (still) Collectors that don't even open comics they buy throwing them in a slab, and just an approach that is more flash and bait and switch rather than storytelling (thin line but a lot of comics have weak storytelling and the characters seem flat, or stiff (both in their development and also the art). Flashy art is awesome of course...that's not really an issue to me. The companies are partially to blame, and the artists want work so everyone has been conditioned to just follow the trends. There's more to it than that but overall that was a basic synopsis of my take on things...that said there's many many great things going on in comics...so there's never just one POV or approach. How many teams stick with a book, or complete a story...all this stuff makes the medium potentially flawed. Now I'm sure the same things were going on back in the day. But I am not sure how proud I'd be of a book that sold a lot because it had 20 different covers. I'd be more proud of a book that had a great story and stuck in people's minds for 30, 40, 50, 100 years.

Very classical painting composition that generally has only been adopted in film primarily of making certain in any wide to mid shot there is a foreground, mid-ground, background on a 3/4 perspective and adequate space to delineate the three planes plus opposing angles generally between the three.

Not sure someone answered your question. Neal only used a #2. He was also sure to tell everyone it had to have an eraser as well. Neal also held his pencils and pens using his thumb and two fingers. Never just one finger. It allowed him to roll the pencil and reduce fatigue. I have been collecting Neal’s art for about 10+ years and attended his online auctions religiously. He shared many of his drawings secrets during those auctions. The question about the pencils came up quite a bit. He also did not like drawing Spider-Man because he had no face and did not like all the lines. Neal brought that up a lot. RIP Neal. I will miss our chats.

The painted future cityscape is concept art from a proposed film adaptation of the Stars My Destination. Continuity was first and foremost an advertising studio that specialized in comics-style art, modeled after Johnstone and Cushing , the prestigious firm that Adams worked at at a very young age. Many top tier cartoonists worked there, including Stan Drake, who was something of a model for Neal's style. I have the Vanguard Adams Art book and the sketchbook, and I've gotta say you've put together a stronger collection of images than either one of them. His forms are all so full-volumed and at the same time he creates layers of depth within the picture, though unlike reality, none of it is out of focus, so you're senses are just bitch-slapped by the sharpness and depth of it all. By the way, on Patreon I've requested another artist who recently passed.

The Xmen story was the GOD LOVES MAN KILLS graphic novel drawn by Brent Anderson. Neal was given the job but then they didn't get his rate approved. Also this was still very early 80s. Neal's style transitioned a lot in the 80s and 90s which I still lament. Much more ad work vs comic work. Bigger cartoony eyes, bubbly anatomy from the man who mastered cramming realistic idealized anatomy into a relatively lanky form. Still, his contributions to comics both on and off the page are undeniable. RIP
