    What exactly is ZEN Core, is it Samples with Behavious Modelling like Super Natrual is or are the waveforms generated by Algorithms/DSP/FPGA or is just PCM. If I pull up a Square wave, can I add PWM to it, Can I waveshape of waves or are they static samples of the waves/multisamples? Anyone know for sure?

  • @avrilcadabra

    its VA and PCM, analogue behaviour modelling, according to Roland not as accurate as their ACB but allows more voices. Emulates pitch drift and temperature variation and other analog problems. I have a super Natural synth, can't answer the rest about Zen.

    I was wondering the same thing. So far I've not seen any demos where they change the Oscillator 'type' & parameters mid-patch. The new "Supersaw Stack" patch _does_ sound a lot better than the broken, hollow, phasing supersaws that are usually produced by Supernatural. The polyphony at first seemed suspiciously high - but the new figure of "32 Voices for the Jupiter 8 model" makes it seem more like a true VA. All the demos though make it look like just a Rompler on steroids 🤔

  • @bilonggrisimmeri

    @bilonggrisimmeri

    GEOSynths My impression is Zen Core is PCM, plus a selection of basic analogue waveforms at the start of the waveform list. These behave with PWM, Super-Saw detune and a few other settings. That's how the Digital part of the JD-XA works - 3 PCM partials per voice. Other Roland synths gave 4 partials per voice, though the principal is the same. It's a bit depressing if all future Roland synths will run the same DSP code, with dfferent PCMs and effects.

    Not only that...insanely, the new Roland Phantom can't sample, it can only load some short drums sounds into the pads. I just couldn't believe it, I had to download the manual to check this and to be sure. Even the Yammy MODX (1000 USD) can at least load 1Gb of samples into a Flash memory, but not the new Fantom. Maybe I don't understand everything but what is an engine? Is that digital? Also, if this doesnt have real analog oscillators then what modern one does. I know the emulation is good but after watching Synthmania's video on the XM, I feel semi comfortable with this except In that video he pointed out how bright the XM was to the originals. My purpose in being concerned about this is authenticity where it comes to producing retro sounds,effects and music.

  • @RobertSaintJohn

    @RobertSaintJohn

    4 жыл бұрын

    It's digital, with 4 virtual analog models (Jupiter 8, Juno 106, SH101, JX-8P) and additional digital models. Paolo at Synthmania did a great job showing how close they were, quickly comparing patch to patch. Yes, sometimes "brighter", but nothing that couldn't be tamed with tweaking. The Xm sounds very authentic, and the X will as well. They have additional "age" and "condition" features which nicely simulate analog and/or vintage behavior. In a mix, no one will be able to tell the difference. If you feel you *have* to have an analog polysynth, look toward DSI/Sequential, Korg Prologue, Novation Peak/Summit, or UDO Super 6 (and some of these are hybrids). But they won't have the classic Roland sound out of the box. Best to go for the sound you want rather than worry about digital vs analog.

    Shock Horror!!! Having just downloaded all 5 .pdf Jupiter Xm documents, it is indeed a ROMPLER!! There's literally thousands of samples and similar numbers of patches (like over 1000 for XV 5080). I will try to figure out if Jupiter 8 patchbank is editable like the real analogue synth, or these are Roland's "best of" selection, with a little layering, filter, amp etc for user customising. This could be about to drop off my Could Buy list. Hope I'm wrong.

    Lordtunes Piano Reviewer I love Roland but forgive the pun, behringer are running rings around them. Korg’s doing the arp. Roland have a tonne of history and legacy and they are missing the point. Either bring something new to the table or create something retro that is core to their legacy. A lot of people want their vintage stuff but it’s too expensive so we buy clones. Or we want something new and fresh. I love Roland and the look of this beast is amazing. But it’s nothing new. And it’s certainly not a real legacy rerelease.

  • @st0rmchild

    @st0rmchild

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@luapworrag The Jupiter-X was not designed to be a recreation of any legacy synth, nor is it marketed as such. Behringer is cleaning up in the low end, budget synth market by copying other companies products (which saves a lot of money on R&D) and mass producing them, nothing more. Zero innovation, and certainly not running rings around anyone. But they do make a lot of people happy who can’t afford to buy anything else, and I give them credit for that.

    It looks great, and is a pretty replicant aesthetically of a jupiter 8. It has all these various engines and does to my ears (via headphones) sound very good. The only puzzle is why they didnt give it a larger, perhaps colour screen, similar to.the V synth (loved it when i had one), instead of what looks like the small screen of the xm. It'd make programming and creating your own arpeggios/sequences a lot easier . At that price, it's a lot of instrument, but if one of the USP's is the i arpeggiator, then the ability to program it with some ease, should be addressed swiftly, for there's a lot of competition, including some of Roland's own products either standalone (e.g. new fantom) or in combination (mc 707 & jupiter xm, for instance), which have more flexibility and useage value.

I thought that when this was announced 2-3 months ago that the price was going to be $2,595… $3K is getting pretty damn high for what this is. I could see this as tempting for many at $2,595 MSRP and a MAP of $2,095.

    This is an open letter to Roland. I think Roland has a very weird view on the market today. Please see Korg as an example how to approach the vintage classics. Just do a 1:1 re-issue, sell them for 4K - 5K make them limited, make them of the highest quality, and you have a really really big winner and your company will earn SO MUCH PROFIT. Jupiter 8 - Make a 1: 1 replica. Exactly the same sound, no difference. Same knobs, same everything. Make it high end. But make it have modern conveniences like: Midi, USB, Velocity and After touch. Make these available to modulate any parameter you like. That's it. Sell them for: 3 - 4K and I can assure you that A LOT of people will buy these. Even at 4 - 5 K. No question, they will sell. Roland, if you are listening, please consider this, this will be huge for the synthesizer community and a new generation of musicians. Secondly, consider doing this with other classics, like the Roland System 700. Here is what you: make a limited ultra high end 1:1 replica, but with modern conveniences of the Roland System 700. Make it as big and chunky like the original, no fancy screens, no lights, a 1:1 replica, but with midi, usb maybe, velocity or after touch would be nice. But no drastic cosmetic or technical changes. Behringer dominates the market with cheap clones, but make yourself different by doing the opposite: reissue your classics, make it stand out by QUALITY. Make HIGH END products. You can easily make a 1:1 reissue of the TR-808, TR-909, etc. People will buy the original ROLAND. Please fill this space in the market Roland. Hope you are listening. Kind regards, -M

    "SO MUCH PROFIT" If that were even remotely true, Roland would jump on it, guaranteed. Korg is doing a labor of love, relatively, those ARP reissues aren't going to fetch them anywhere near as much money as their digital keyboards and other products, but they do it anyway because they probably are more full of synth enthusiasts, I think. Roland chases money, and money is in digital, and their digital keyboards are top sellers, so that steers which way they go on flagship product design.

I noticed the D-beam, where present, became more and more limited in function in later models, for example. I haven't spent much time in a music store the last few years but the last time I checked every Roland synth seemed to be a focused, limited subset of earlier models with one or two whizz-bang features to make it seem 'new'. Sound-wise they all seemed to me to be just using an SRX sound engine or derivative. I think the sweet spot for 'modern' Roland boards was still 2000-2004 or so, Fantom-X/G, V-Synth/XT.

The Yamaha Montage and all of that I see it as a workstation/performance synth I have a Montage 8 and I always consider these high end keyboards as my main keyboard for everything and the Jupiter X as a secondary synthesizer for lead sounds and (etc). There is a lot said abouth the analog vs digital question and I want not at present to go into this. What I think there is missing in the whole debate as I have seen abouth this synth is a more objective point of view. Remeber that some get these synth for free or borough for making a video/review which might corrupt the objectivity - thought Loopop made a balanced review, and it is OK to show how to use (read make music) with the product like Gattobus make. There are some unclear points abouth this synthesizer and I will hope that Sonic State will adress these in future reviews of the Jupiter x (Hearafter called JX). I will first mention these and afterwards give some comments on how I see this product. 1. Roland writtes in product spec that there is over 4.000 tones and 256 user tones. Does this mean that the 4.000 presets are non-rewritable? Jupiter 80/50 has 2.500 livesets and 2.500 tones which all can be deleted and overwritten with user tones. If it is true that there is only 256 user tones it is a major drawback compared to Jupiter 80/50. Remember that the tones in a scene are only adressed to the tone banks and any change to a tone in one scene will effect/change the tone itself and used in another scene. This will be very limited when 256 scenes only comrises of some of the presets or one or more of the 256 . Not much variation. 2. Are tones imported to a scene with or without the actual effects used by the tone in a tonebank? 3. What is a "model" or as one of the Roland employes call it "engine"? Is this a model of certain synthesizer as on System 8 (fex JP8, Juno 106 etc.) or is it "just" a bank of patches (tones) that are programmed to sound like certain synthesizer sound (fex JP 8 strings, Juno bass tec)? 4. The above mentioned is related to the used Zen core technology. I observed that some called it tech from Vsynth, some tech from d-50 etc.and that it is sample based. There is no question that it is NOT the ACB tech used in System 8 or the boutiques. 5. JX and Xm has four oscilators (partials) Can you have one oscilator (partial) with VA waveform, another one with a digital wave, the third with ...(?)? Again if the "model" is a virtual model of certain synthesizer you can not as the original analog of cource only had analog waveforms. On JdXa and Prevous Jupiters and Fantoms tec. you could freely mixe oscilator types to achieve more varation or certain kind of (evolving) sound. The informations given by Roland both on the webpage, in product documentation and in product shows (NAMM etc.) are quite a bit unclear on all the above mentioned questions. Roland ows to give customers clear informations. Some of the communication is "smart"salestalk and beets around the bush. As i see the product there might be the case that it is a way to organise sounds more that a virtual remake of certain instruments. In both Jupiter 80/50 and JdXa you can have patches called "JP8 ...and something "strings etc" .., JUno .... and something ("bass or brass"). These patches (tones) are spread over variety of memory locations. It could seems that the tones mimicing certain synthesizer instrument sound are put together in a bank called "model" (with the modeled filter type as you allready have in Jupiter 80/50, JdXa etc. So it might be more a bank of "Jupiter sounds, a bank of SH sounds etc more then a modeled instrument (synthesizer) in question. It is just made easy for those who want "JP strings" to find the sound (tone). If it was a specific modeled VA synthesizer in JX how can you have the same in the new Fantom and MC boxes? These don`t call things "models" or engines, but talk more abouth certain types of modeled filters (fex JP filter, Moog and Prophet ) that can be used in programming of certain type of sounds in question. As is written there is around 50 arpeggiotypes. In Jupiter 80/50 you have 126 with several number of variations on each and place for 126/16 user arpeggios. If the above said on restricted memory the JX is a step-back from Jupiter 80/50 in several aspects I see the JX as a kind of new Jupiter 80/50 with a better UI - knobs and sliders for most parameters, as JUpiter 80/50 had a more digital approach with a lot menuediving. Though the new JX might have a problem - the tiny screen - if you want to make user arpeggios. It seems nearly impossible to see anything as you have both the rows and lines and other parameters in one screen picture. The same with in deep programming. People ask who is this synth made for. I will try a guess - giging keybordist in a band that need a portable instrument with a variety of synth sounds and whos audience don`t give a s.... what instrument you use (irrelevant if it is analog or digital, Korg or Roland etc.). And then people who want/desire the vintage synths, but I am affraid they will get disappointed.

    So close, but so far... No one cares about Roland's modelling obsession except Roland. Why no real analogue?

    andrew jones I listend to Synth Mania's comparison video, whch seems to show otherwise. I thought all the legacy synths sounded nealy identical to JupiterXm. I don't know any of them well, if at all, and the 5080 model may not be the complete original, as that was an S&S design. Also, JupiterX is a synth in its own right, with its own samples, waveforms, filters etc. That said, a UK price of £2,500 would be too much for me. I really want to love this synth.

    @@bilonggrisimmeri Analogue modelling is old tech to try and sound like real analogue but to avoid the pitfalls of the 1970s circuits. Those pitfalls have been overcome in the last 5 or so years and it's now completely possible to make real, dependable and cost-effective analogue gear. I'd like to meet the guy at Roland who's making the decision not to do analogue reproductions of the 303, 808, 606, Jupiter 8 etc. He needs to be sacked. Hell, if Korg can make money from an Arp 2600 reissue, why not Roland and the Jupiter 8? For the right price, they'd sell a shit ton. Meanwhile, I think I'll just wait for the Behringer Jupiter 8 clone. It should be along to cut Roland's grass (again) any day now...
