Roland Jupiter-X Vs Zenology Pro - is the Jupiter X Worth It?

Ойын-сауық

Today we're going to explore the question, is the Roland Jupiter-X worth the price? Especially as it compares to the Roland Cloud Zenology Pro plug-in, a much more affordable version of the Zen Core synthesis engine.

Jupiter X is one of those things that you'll perhaps dismiss for 'paper stats' and underwhelming youtube displays - until you get your hands on it. Then you rapidly realize, that providing the work flow sits well with you, that it is more than the sum of its parts. Creativity and inspiration is more, than simple convenience and expedience. Its as much motivation and joy, as it just concerning yourself with ease of access. Like another commentator here, I've paired it (with very little home space) with my Kronos 88 and whilst both are menu heavy; I am constantly happy and impressed with them. Which is and should be peoples primary concern - not just buying what others tell you to. There is nothing wrong with personal preference. Not everyone needs an X. But is it enough to say Hardware is dead. Just a program in a box? No it isn't. Because its not just your kit making the sound. Its your personal interaction, feeling and feedback from that experience which ultimately summarizes it all. The moment we start being grateful for what we have once more and keeping our critique reasonable and in keeping with the great fortune we have at even having these great pieces of equipment the better. As it will only serve to foster a more productive and less toxic attitude. People will bash the X. When it is a great modern alternative to a difficult to (financially) reproduce hereditary peer like the JP-8. They didn't have half of what we do now in the 80s and all that mattered, was the music DESPITE the limitations. That needs to be/become a regained element/attitude of that era. Its sorely missing in way too many so called enthusiasts of our current time.

Hardware verses software, it is an ongoing debate to be sure. I have been a musician for 54 years, since I was 10 years old. I have been deeply involved in the technology of recording and electronic instruments for 35 years. I been through it all, from reel-to-reel, to cassette, to digital tape, to hard disk recorders, to computers. I've been using computers since the 1980s in my work as a graphic designer and later as a musician (in the 80s we were using quarter million-dollar main frame computers). Computers are great for graphic design, visual communication. But over the decades I have completely eliminated computers from my music. Seeing music (waves) on a screen is not helpful but has de-humanized music...making the recording of music on computers an extreme detriment to today's music. Now we want to have instruments on computers too, and use the awkward control of mouse and MIDI CC interaction with our instrument. I am a highly practiced musician, 5 decades of dedication to organ, guitar and synths; interacting with a screen for performing on an instrument is out of the question for stage use, and sickening for studio use...to me. I think most musicians who have had a connection to their instruments for decades would agree. Software instruments give us the opportunity to own hundreds to thousands of different instruments for a low price....HOWEVER..... a true musician does not want this variety, they want an instrument articulation to be familiar so to make new sounds by performing in innovative ways. As an old sound designer for synths, this variety is also unneeded, it takes years to know one single synth and design fantastic never-heard-before sounds. Using presets is a disgrace for a sound designer, presets make new music boringly copycatted. Synths have from the very beginning been an instrument of creation. The advantage of hardware instruments is the ROM chip and discrete circuitry, they are always the same, boot up exactly the same; with the exception of firmware updates..if you use them. New is not always better, and the speed at which I can sound design on a menu-less synth is 10x to 100x faster than a software synth. Software synths depend on a computer that is always changing from day to day. Computer updates and old computer chipsets and CPUs are not compatible, so, complete computer hardware is replaced regularly. These OS, application, and hardware updates make software instruments the MOST expensive there are. Hardware instruments that can be used for one to two decades are cheaper by far...unless....you prescribe to the more is better and need to own 20 or more synths. In all of this.... making wonderful music is the goal, I suppose, there are some geek-heads who experiment with sound but never produce actual music. For those who buy instruments to make music, more is not better, and the full use of our carefully chosen synths is a sacred time invested. 10 years of knowing one synth provides an immediate connection to the song I am writing where I can know this synth can make the sound in my head....and 10 to 30 minutes later I am performing my song with my sound design. Since eliminating computers from my music where with a computer I never recorded a single album...to today where with 100% hardware (including a hardware recorder) I have made over 70 albums over the last 10 years. Music is for ears - mind - body - emotion - energy - soul - heart ....computers have none of this. Perfection of timing, pitch, vocals, instrument, is not human. Locked to a grid is a prison. Moving chunks of music around a screen is like building a brick wall separating passion from music.

Given your experience in the field I would like to ask you a question. I would like to buy my first synthesizer, I love electronic dance music and I want to enter the world of sound design. I have experience with various vst on PC that have bored me by now. I want something physical, something to interact with. I have a budget limited to 2,500 euros. I have watched many videos to document myself but I can't decide. I've seen very nice synthesizers like sequential take 5, but its polyphony is limited to 5 notes and the 44-key keyboard doesn't satisfy me, I've seen sequential rev 2 with 8 and 16 note polyphony which attracts me a lot, but then I saw the Jupiter x and now I'm undecided. the things I give the most importance to are polyphony, 61-key keyboard and then I would like my sound shaping experience not to be too conveyed by a screen (as some say about the Jupiter x). I would be very grateful if you could spend a few minutes to help me define my choice. thank you with all my heart.

Great and well reasoned video. You are very much in my stable of thought and like having tactile feel of the keyboard as opposed to a screen display of an instrument. Soft synths are a necessary evil, but I try to minimise my use to those that are required for the task at hand. Jon

I bought the X a week ago and it´s amazing and even when both are using the zen core technology, IMO using Zenology pro is not the same experience, is cold and lifeless in comparison of playing with the Jupiter X or even with the Jupiter 8, Juno 106 and so many VST synth. Maybe is because visually is different and my brain has a different reaction and think the hardware and VST emulations sound better and warmer than the sounds from Zenology. I'm a geek so I know Zenology pro is minimalistic with the idea to not stress the CPU as much as the VST version of the legendary synths does, but again, IMO, is less inspiring than playing with something that looks like a real synth. Zenology looks like a tablet App, not like a synth. But again, is the feeling, not the reality. I never use Zenology when working on the computer. I always use the legendary Roland Cloud synth, or the Arturia V collection, or the Korg Collection or VST that looks more pleasant are closer to a real synth. Maybe this is because I grew up playing hardware synth, and even when I love to work on the computer, there's something with Zenology that won't catch my attention when I start to work in a track and I pick a synth. Zenology pro is fast, full of sounds and easy to use, but is just boring and less inspiring. All the synths sounds different but they look the same inside Zenology :P I think Zenology pro can be super cool as an extension of the hardware in the computer, like having a big screen for editing. If we can control de X/Xm using Zenology withou having to export/import the tones, that could be interesting, like a more visual way to control the synth while working in the computer. Otherwise I rather prefer dealing with the tiny LCD screen on the Jupiter X than on Zenology Pro. And a last thing, I work on visual arts, so the design is something that affects my decisions most of the time and for sure that's why I prefer the ACB versions instead of the Zenology versions, even when the ACB are more CPU demanding and both sounds pretty much the same, the ACB VST are just more fun to play and it feels that you're using a clone of the real synth and not an app. I'm making and editing a lot of different tones on my Jupiter X, something that I never did in Zenology. Maybe at the end is just the fun factor what turns the scale to one side or the other. Jupiter X it really rocks!

The big big difference is hardware that’s designed to leverage the software and integration of all the sound engines. If Omnisphere had a dedicated hardware controller made by spectrasonics. Omnisphere would or could be an incredible synth. Hardware and software have polar opposites advantages and owning both version would be ideal. Going portable with a laptop you could lug around a virtual setup but having hardware somehow connects me to my instrument at a deeper level.

Great video. I'm a hardware guy, I spend my days in front of a computer screen running my business. The last thing I want to do when creating music is sit in front of a screen some more, wiggling a mouse cursor around. The immediacy and tactility of hardware wins every time for me. I have a Kronos and that's unbelievably deep and complex to work with. But it rewards effort and perseverance and is a different workflow to a computer app. I suspect the Jupiter X is a similar story.

I will probably get the Jupiter x anyways because it looks like great fun and I can afford it but just because you can afford something doesn’t mean its worth it. I have a JDXA and I love that synth albeit it has the older super natural synth engine , which is a lovely sounding engine, as well as true analog, it sounds awesome and it satisfies the knob tweaking side of me. Now do I need a Jupiter X? No. But i had a Jupiter 6 for a decade and it was awesome , why I sold it is a sad story, anyways im a jupiter fanboy and I will love the Jupiter X no doubt.

You should compare to Cloud Zenology Pro + all the Zen-Core expansions that are included in the Jupiter X + a decent midi keyboard + a decent PC / soundcard. But yeah, the Jupiter X / Xm should be a bit less expensive. They recently released the v3.0 update that includes a new Jupiter X sound model and some nice arpeggiator additions, which shows they still invest time and money in making the customers from their hardware happy.

I use Roland Cloud, and I have to admit that I really like the service. Until recently, I had been focusing on the Legendary instruments, but with all the nice reviews I've stumbled across about Zenology, I've started playing around with it. I have to admit, the Jupiter-X looks like a nice kit, but at $2400, it's a big chunk of change for a hobbyist like me. IF only a local store had one to look at (they all have Fantoms on display instead). Anyway, I supposed you've noticed by now that Roland did indeed come out with an editor for the Jupiter series (both X and Xm). It would be cool if you gave your feedback on it and whether it marks all your checkboxes on what you were hoping said editor would do for you... You might convince this little ol' hobbyist to start saving his pennies. 😁

Yeah for that money, i would absolutely recommend buying a Sequential synth, and then send knob tweaks from that over to Zenology for doing the Roland digital stuff. Honestly once you map knobs of an actual synthesizer to soft synths, you do get those ‘a-ha!’ Moments. I do find that midi controller keyboards are too generic to give me an inspiring workflow. Having a control keyboard that’s arranged like an actual synthesizer is huge, and you can send knob data from Sequential synths.

I agree with most of your points. While Zenology Pro is amazing on its own, it doesn't have the innate ability to layer tones into scenes like you have with the hardware versions. And let's be fair. Zenology is great, but there were already some absolutely incredible software synthesizers on the market that sound phenomenal. The reason you have a hardware synth is not because it natively sounds "better" than a software synth (unless we're talking vintage analog stuff), but that it gives you hands-on control and abilities you don't have in software alone. I mean, the technology built into the Jupiter-X is mind blowing and the sound is out of this world. The same can be said for Roland's other hardware synths that feature ZenCore. In addition to the Jupiter-X (which I just acquired), I also own the AX-Edge and Aerophone Pro. All three use the Zencore engine in a very similar way, with the ability to layer each tone into scenes of at least four parts. It's a staggeringly powerful architecture. One of the big reasons I chose the Jupiter-X over other synths is because of the ability to create sounds and export them to other ZenCore instruments.

The Jupiter X looks great, can sound wonderful, but is a major pain in the @$# to operate. Build quality is fantastic, the keybed feels great, but I just can't understand why Roland castrated the Jupiter X with a tiny screen and numerous controls that aren't one to one to operate. All of the sliders and knobs give the user a sense the Jupiter X will be easy to operate, but it is not. The tiny screen is required for much of the editing of the sounds and setup. If you don't have 20/20 vision, don't expect the screen to be of much use to you. Sure you can use your computer to edit sounds, but that defeats the purpose of the real time knobs and sliders.

  • @ebull666

Completely agree, whilst you can tweak some basic essentials like filter and envelopes, for anything deeper especially for the JV patches you are back to using computer editor unless you want to scroll through dozens of pages on tiny screen. Without the new software editor you more or less have to use this as a preset player. That said, there are so many 100s of great presets I agree with video that having the hardware Jupiter X makes it fairly quick to layer up and split the 5 parts. So despite these limitations I still found this synth useful for its unique hardware access to those classic Roland sounds that remain part of the language of modern music..

And if, when then very rare moment arrives, I can adjust parameters to or reduce the sound quality by a fraction or take a bit more latency and good to go. I can really recommend these RME interfaces. You can find them on Marktplaats for € 600,-. Money spend really well.

I think Zenology Pro is an excellent VA. Making the interface resizable opened it up for me in a big way. I am on the one year free trial subscription promo now that came with my MC707, which I just coincidentally purchased right before the promo went live. I am not sure if I am going to buy Zenology Pro or just geez going with the subscription after my year is up. My one critique is that the model expansions are over priced, IMO, for what they are. I would say that they are perhaps worth 50-100 USD. I am planning for a new “flagship” non-workstation KB purchase in a few months with timing driven more by my professional work schedule and choice not driven particularly by price. It is features and space in my home studio (so if A+B costs less than C alone I won’t be getting both A and B due to price). As far as studio controllers , I use an Arturia Keylab 88. I don’t want or need a workstation.

The huge benefit is that I can change my sounds on a project directly in Logic Pro, And most important = - a licence is indestructible, while a physical synth can be stolen or have hardware issues, - is less pricy - follow the upgrades of my computer

I don't have much option financially to buy an actual jupiter x synth, and I'm not feeling the whole monthly sub thing, either. I'm thinking my own personal best option is to buy the lifetime zenology key. I am wondering though, will this license really "last" forever? Aside from updates, what about re-activation? If, for example, a new computer is purchased, and an install is needed. Hopefully that lifetime key is an actual, physical card and/or thumbdrive/dongle. Also, as far as not being stuck behind a computer, even with something like a zenology lifetime license, wouldn't just midi mapping all of your "go-to" slider and knob configs for editing be fine with a pre chosen patch from the UI and then just minimize your screen on the daw, and have everything in front of you like a real hardware experice via midi controller keyboard?

I noticed for trancey sounds, the Jupiter X actually sounds better. When I checked Zen Pro (jp8 model), I couldn't find a tone EQ or any effects beyond a single Multi-Fx slot. So if you make a big supersaw patch on the JPX using JP8 & unison, eq, space chorus, delay, reverb AND distortion etc... it can't be done inside of Zen. I may be wrong though- I haven't dived to deep into Zen yet.

I´m getting back into the studio/band business. I´m buying Jupiter-X and I´m going to buy a subscription to the Zen-pro (I still have original JD-800). But I wonder if I should get a Fantom-8 or is that overload? Would Zen-pro be just as good within DAW?

The Fantom looks really, really nice. Tough choice. If I'm being honest the looks of the Jupiter certainly played a role in why I choose it over the Fantom. That and I didn't think I really needed a full blown workstation, but I could see myself having both one day.

Jupiter X = ZenCore on Roland's hardware. Roland Cloud = ZenCore on whatever computer and sound card you have. Not the same thing at all. I paid $2700 for my Mac. That didn't have an audio interface. To get a truly decent sound setup using a Mac and a UA interface (for example) - you are up into the price range of a Fantom 7.

  • @Curious_Skeptic

Always comes back to tactile interface of hardware, vs the boring, lackluster experience of VST on a flat computer screen! I think a happy medium would be a System 8 & Zenolgy Pro. You could use the System 8 with Vst. It is mindblower that in 2024, no one has made a generic 'analog synth' BEAST midi controller. Taking something like A Jupiter 8 control layout, knobs/sliders/ generic labeling, and turned that into a midi control, with no built in sound engine. A midi controller that would be in the 500-800 range with poly aftertocuh. Obviously, you can find the cheapest synth with as many sliders and knobs, and program that to the Zenology as your midi controller. Still, someone is missing the boat on the need for a better midi controller with a properly laid out control setup.

What happend here is the same as we (gear geek) already discussed in the past , we where talking about the difference between the "Access Virus C" which is a pure VA and the plugin version (TC Electronic Powercore version) they are identical and using the same DSP , they sound completely different in the end because there is analog stage and convertor and other hardware thing that cannot be emulate (for the moment) , and this make these small difference that make this "sound" much better than plugin version, i assume that it is the same thing for the Jupiter X

If you’re looking at hardware i would recommend looking at a synth with an analog filter. I’m not one of those people who thinks ‘analog is always better’ or whatever. But analog filtering *does* sound different to my ears, and it is a great tool to have in your kit! There are lots of options for polyphonic keyboards, from inexpensive (Deepmind is great) to mid (Prophet Rev 2, 12 etc) to expensive (OB-8, Prophet X). I sold some vintage gear i had, and bought a Prophet X, which plays back samples as well as digital oscillators, through an incredible-sounding stereo Prophet filter. I wanted to have one super slamming analog filter polysynth, and wowww does it come through! Anything i play on it is jaw-droppingly gorgeous sound. Like an acoustic piano, even playing ‘wrong’ notes sounds beautiful, and that’s how the Prophet sounds. I have Roland Cloud Pro, and tbh there’s nothing comparable from Roland. Just my opinion, ymmv.

Its normal the output of a keyboard to be much better as they are built to have that most keyboard have analog outputs. It's also less from a computer solely depending on the audio interface , If the quality of the interface good the sound will be better and full let alone there more room to fatten sound up in a DAW. Roland thought ahead it would make a difference. Integra also has a better output same case.

This is misinformed in a way, any line/xlr/etc apart from digital mediums like spdif/etc is analog outputs. You are talking about d/a converters, and yeah, they do make a difference. But modern converters really aim for pristine, truthful sound than colored. As in mc707 there are quality converters, that are virtually indistinguishable from computer and audio interface. Pre amp would be used for adding flavor to the sound, such as an analog mixer before audio interface. In either case you could do this, just boost input gain to introduce distortion. People even run soft synths from an audio interface to mixer and back to audio interface to make it sound fatter for example. Zenology pro has an advance in studio, as everything is stored inside daw but i would rather play a keyboard like jupiter x otherwise

Roland is getting worse and worse. from a hardware seller (analog) to a software dealer (zencore/plugin) with overprized cloud controllers. Jupiter-X or Juno-X are absolutely overrated - no real innovation since system-8. i don't understand why roland didn't build an analog reissue of the legendary 6/60. Everyone tests the same boring advantage of the Zencore engine as if everyone is paid by Roland. Roland does case modding and builds Zencore into the devices every time. Long time ago the last time roland build an real analog synth fullsize.
