Roland Jupiter-X Demo and Review | Alamo Music Center

Zach Marr is back with a full review of one of our current favorite pieces from Roland, the Jupiter-X. If you're familiar with analog synths, you know how amazing and musical these instruments are; however, the drawbacks of both proper maintenance and the astronomical prices of well-kept vintage synthesizers are substantial-- enter Roland. Roland has been producing amazing instruments that are forward-minded in their vintage-inspired designs. The Jupiter-X packs the voices from the Jupiter 8, Juno 106, JXAP, and SH101 with many added features for the convenience of the modern musician. Adding built in speakers, an intelligent arpeggiator, on board digital effects, aftertouch, extensive polyphony, customizable heat & age emulation, and many more, Roland has hit the sweet spot right between vintage and modern. Take a listen to Zach's review and demo to learn more!

Love my Jupiter X. Bit of a learning curve to learn how to navigate your way around but after you get passed it you’ll be able to explore all the possibilities. I never owned any of the originals so owning a Jupiter X makes up for any lost time…… bought mine from you guys last summer. Thank you Alamo Music Center.

This was prolly the best demo of this unit I’ve seen. Thank you for that. I have 3 analog synths. I’ve only been into synth playing close to 1 year. The Jupiter-X is at my music store. I want that Roland pad sound, as it is it’s own beast. But I gotta confess, even in my limited time of playing synth, I can sorta feel the “digital” of the Jupiter-X. And I don’t feel Roland put enough Jupiter-8 presents in it. All that said, watching your demo really made me want one. Lol So thanks again!

I really appreciate the time and effort invested into making this video. However, maybe due to a time limitation, it doesn't remotely scratch the surface of what the instrument is capable of. This is a $2500.00+ piece of gear being reduced to a $150.00 Casio by the playing style in this video. Just turn on the arpeggio, and press a key. So, let me kill some of the pain. The amazing specs of the Roland Jupiter - X : -Great pianos, Rhodes, and organs in addition to all of the greatest analogs. -Three filter styles based on Roland, Sequential, and Moog. -The keyboard can be sectioned into four parts with layering. -Temperature and aging effects can be applied to the signal. I think the video should have demonstrated the sounds of the raw wave signals. They sound euphoric and completely justify the cost of the beast. Now, I can rest.

Nah, it's kinda my critique of all his videos...... Simple pads, beginner church music. Nothing that ever shows the power or capabilities of the synth being demonstrated. Feels like standing in the synth section of Guitar Center on a Saturday. - A real shame, 'cause often I'm searching for reviews when I'm thinking of aa synth and Alamo's always show up on top.

The four oscillator sliders are for the ZEN-Core synthesis engine which is a four partial architecture, as well as the XV-5080 model. It also comes handy now for the JD-800 model that runs on the Jupiter-X. The most powerful feature of this synthesizer is the ZEN-Core engine. The pre-loaded models limit the ZEN-Core capabilities to more manageable units, which is a nice approach actually, so that you would not be immediately overwhelmed by the vast ZEN-Core capabilities. The models are by no means the main features of the Jupiter-X. If you look through the categories 7 through 16, you'll see how vast the sonic possibilities of the Jupiter-X are.

@@SPAZZOID100 Perhaps it is. Although simulating electronic components with software running on electronic components is a bit strange anyhow. I find the modeling of acoustic drivers and resonators more interesting. I also find the XV-synthesizer capability the main selling point of both the Jupiter-X and Juno-X. The XV-series synthesis architecture is far more powerful than any normalled analog synthesizer.

For what this synth cost, you really, REALLY have to love the Roland sound. For that money, I would rather buy a modern Sequential or older DSI…this synth kinda feels like a Korg microkorg that can afford to have a really expensive cocain problem.

  • @scottgentile1663

I bought the X and after 2 weeks returned it. The main issue I have with it is just the convoluted interface and the different modeled synths really don't sound that much different and it doesn't justify making all of these confusing multiple functions per slider. It would have been better if it was just an evolved System 8. IMO the Jupiter X is the most uninspiring of the entire line as there really isn't anything in the Jupiter X that is new in ways that matter all that much and some of the features like warming up of oscillators are just so... stupid. Also, using all of that important real estate front and center for this retro 8 segment LCD when they could have put a proper screen tells me they were more interested in shallow appearance than function. It's mostly a poorly implemented rehash of the Integra.
