Mythbusters: C5 Corvette Factory Wheel Weigh-Off (Magnesium, Z06, Stock)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is all about weight. The C5 Magnesium Wheel is supposed to save a bunch of weight... That's what they said anyways.
Follow along on this 30min epic video as I go through tons of wheels and their weights.
PS - The ending is a surprise....

I appreciate all the effort put into this video. This just goes to show you that GM did a great job making these wheels as light as possible. The 17" magnesium weighing in at 17lbs is still very impressive as a wheel and the Z06 wheel even more so. A 17x9 Rays gramlights 57cr weighs in at 18lbs! So all of the C5 wheels are pretty damn light as far as wheels go. The real weight savings come from not running, run flat tires. My wagon wheels with the OEM Goodyear run flats weighed in at 49lbs for the 17" and 53lbs for the 18".

The stock wheels on my sport coupe 370Z were 19 x 9 & 19 x 10, made of forged aluminum and weighed about 23 lbs. I bought a set of Litespeed Racing forged magnesium monoblock wheels of the same size that weigh about 14 lbs. The difference in handling is quite noticeable, with better steering response and better suspension dynamics. The wheels not only lighten unsprung weight but also your wallet, to the tune of $3k each.

Ironic. I just bought a '99 FRC in Puter. I really think these will be noticed over time as the "first ones". No HUD, limited options, low production. Anyway, I like the wagons and trying to keep it stock, but the mags will look really nice. Great, easy going presentation. In a good way, can't believe I watched this full :30 vid! Keep up the good work!

I use a layer of anti seize compound on the mounting surface of the hub with the wheel to reduce the possibility of corrosion. I think you could have gotten a better engineered wheel that would have weighed less. Specifically, having very thin spokes in the shape of I beams with additional cutouts in the spokes for more weight savings. My recommendation would be to use Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or Cup 2 tires for even more weight savings. My 370Z with 19 x 9 Litespeed Racing forged magnesium monoblock wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2(240) tires comes in at 37 lbs total weight.

My 2K Coupe has the stock painted thin spokes, this is good as I think they are one of the best looking OEM wheels ever produced. I am in process of a stroked LS3 build expecting 650 rwhp but also want to keep it as sleeper looking as a Magnetic Metallic Red C5 can. I put rears on all four corners and I am thinking about having the rear ones widened 1" to squeeze some big meats in there. Great video, you got a sub from me.

My 2000 C5 Corvette convertible 6 SPD Manual has the magnesium wheels MSRP $4500 discounted price to $3500 with the Goodyear run flat tires which were standard. Per the Corvette museum there were only 264 ordered. Which puts it on the rare list. Double coat of Millennium yellow and clearcoat option was $500 .. The double coating had only 255 ordered. Light oak convertible top and electric sport seats was a no cost option. These three options put the car on the most rare list with the Indy Pace Corvettes ... Presently my Vette only has 22,354 miles on it.

BTW, I have 2 sets of the Mag C5 wheels so I can have 17s and/or 18s on all 4 corners on my 383 LT4 Camaro Z28 (More on that later) Back in 2006 I ordered a set of aftermarket 18 inch C6 wheels and tires that weighed in at a total of 210 pounds all together. When I swapped on the C5 Mag wheels and tires, the weight came down to 150 pound in total. That's because I made sure that I ordered the lightest tires I can find that are in the ultra high performance all season category. Summer time or extreme summer tires would have been a little more heavier but my Z28 handles pretty dam good with the all season tires. Also to further reduce weight, I ordered up a set of titanium lug nuts (highly recommended just because they won't corrode not to mention there almost 2 pounds lighter then the chrome lug nuts)

If I install the C5 Magnesium 18s with 275/35/r18 tires, my wheel and tire weight would only go up by just 8-9 pound using General Gmax AS05 compared to my 18 inch C6 wheels. BTW the tires on my C6 wheels are only 255/40/R18s. Just goes to show how you have to closely inspect tire weight and I do that by using tirerack's website cause they have all there tires specs listed compared to other websites.

@@RubberCityMotoring Thank You. Also take into consideration that the old 295 tires on the Z06 wheels have decent ware on them which will lighten them up a pound or 2 depending on whoever owned them before and how many burn outs or just plain mileage the tires have been through.
