FILM DESCRIPTION:
Directed by Clint Eastwood, the mysterious drama Mystic River is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane and adapted by screenwriter Brian Helgeland. Set in an Irish neighborhood in Boston, Jimmy, Sean, and Dave are three childhood friends who are reunited after a brutal murder takes place. Reformed convict Jimmy Markum (Sean Penn) and his devoted wife Annabeth (Laura Linney) find out that their teenage daughter Katie (Emmy Rossum) has been beaten and killed. Jimmy's old friend Sean Devine (Kevin Bacon) is the homicide detective assigned to the case, along with partner Whitey Powers (Laurence Fishburne). Jimmy also gets his relatives, the Savage brothers (Adam Nelson and Robert Wahlberg), to conduct an investigation of their own. Clint Eastwood won a Golden Coach for Mystic River at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.

for sure I also think Ben Kinsley nailed his role and was also worthy of a Oscar House on Sand Fog when his son died i cried my eyes out so tragic
According to Eastwood, he had six men on Penn, but after first take, he had to put two more on him because he was fighting so hard. When his voice breaks at 1:58, I start to tear up because the emotion is so visceral. Well- deserved Oscar for his compelling performance. Incredible cast!

I agree. The general public doesn't give actors in general enough credit. People think it's an easy job for easy money. While yes you can get million for one project and 3-5/6 months of work but it's not just showing up and reciting lines. You're not a good actor just cause you say and remember your lines. The real testament to an actors skill is being able to draw out the viewers emotion and show them exactly what would have been said out loud but only with body language and realistic face expressions! Plus long hours and tons of traveling.

Sean Penn is amazing in this scene no question. But Kevin Bacon NAILS it. His facial expression says it all. " You really WANT to KNOW the answer to that. Here it is. I don't even have children and I felt his sadness and anguish through my laptop screen. His raw talent and emotion pierced my soul. I had never heard of this movie before today, but this one scene brought tear to my eyes and at that very moment...I knew that I had to watch this film.

This has to be one of the greatest scenes in acting history. The emotion watching this makes me feel is insane. As a man, having one of your children die, especially in this manner, is the worst thing that could possibly happen to you.

Everyone talks about Sean Penn in this scene, but Kevin Bacon is great as well. You can tell he is fighting every emotion he has NOT to tell him that his daughter is in that ditch, and no doubt that day will haunt him for the rest if his life.
What father would not be torn apart when he discovers that his child was killed and dumped like garbage.
Sean penn gave All he had in that scene. He is underappreciated I think in the actors world . He went from being a stoner kid in fast times to a man that could convey such emotion ..to honestly portray a man in anguish over the loss of his precious daughter

My dad (RIP) was never a big film enthusiast. A majority of the films that he would only watch were book adaptation films. This was one of those films that he watched. I remember him being so happy to see Sean Penn win the best actor award for this film. We used to watch the award ceremonies and I remember seeing this little snippet of Sean Penn screaming if his daughter was in that ditch. I didn’t understand what was really happening because I was only 13 at the time. I watch it now almost 20 years later, Sean Penn acted the hell out of this scene so well I felt my heart break.
Colbert interview w Sean's daughter brought me here... Definitely his best performance
No one will ever express the shock and the utter guttural pain when one first hears or realizes that someone whom you deeply love has been taken. I thought I would never, ever witness in any realm an artist in any medium express that depth of pain. Does any one know how his amazing work might have been drawn, apart from his innate genius as an actor?
I now have a 3 year old daughter, and this scene absolutely destroys me every time I see it.

Great scene. Love this youtube channel. With all of that said, tough decision to cut the scene short and omit that amazing aerial shot.
Lack of music makes this scene more tense
Watched this film again recently. What makes this scene even more heartbreaking is as tough and calloused as Jimmy (Sean Penn's characters) was, while he was in jail, the thing he feared the most... the only thing he couldn't handle and tormented him for years is that when he got out of jail, his daughter wouldn't love him because he was in jail. He admitted to Dave that he loved his oldest daughter, Katie, the most because she endured so much hardship when Jimmy got out of jail, after the death of Katie's mother.
Probably the most emotional scene I have ever watched.
I started the book by Lehane over a week ago. Eastwood really did great job recreating the scene
One of the most unintentionally funny scenes I've ever seen.
Being the father of a teenage girl this scene gets me every time, in particular when his voice breaks! And outstanding thoroughly deserved Oscar winning performance 👏🏻👏🏻
