I was watching "Mystic River" again recently and when he said "I couldn't even cry for her", I thought: "That's how I was when Dad died." Our relationship in the past two years before his death had been difficult, which probably explains how conflicted I felt.

Sean Penn absolutely deserved this. "Is that my daughter in there?" scene is phenomenal and still wrecks me every time I watch it.

@@cheyennebrennan966 agreed, however it was a little odd, when acting as Heath Ledger’s replacement in Imaginarium, that he feels like Jack Sparrow, rather than Heath’s character. To be fair, it’s not like Depp was able to view any raw footage from Heath’s work on that film, to be able to find or identify the character. Also he was flown out to set over the weekend and had less than 48 hours to film his scenes so he probably just used a character he was familiar with.

@Diego Pisfil Actually to me it is, on the grand scheme of things at least. Lost in translation has been overhyped for good reasons and well deserved because it alludes more to the bleak reality of individuals as opposed to system of individuals which Mystic River alludes to. Yeah lost in translation addresses all the philosophical and contemplative points which are important, but Mystic river alludes more to the realities of now and the human condition. Lost in translation is more about navigating uncertainty, while mystic river is about dealing with misguided certainty.

Man, really heartwarming to see Clint emotional You can tell that he is a man who loves cinema, and that he is so proud of Sean. Mystic River in my humble opinion was phenomenal.

I just love Sean Penn, he is so charming and a brilliant actor.

This is unquestionably the best performance ever given by Bill Murray. The word "perfect" is rarely used in association with the work of an actor, but it is deserved here. Murray is mainly serious, but he gets the opportunity to throw in little bits of comedy (improvised by him?) that are understated enough that they don't damage the flow. Best of all, as a man in the midst of a mid-life crisis, Murray never seems to force anything.

Mystic River is winner of two Oscars including best supporting actor (Tim Robbins) and best actor (Sean Penn).

Regardless of how one feels about his political activism, this man is at the top of his game. He is simply one of the best actors alive.

I think Sean Penn is brilliant as an actor. He completely deserves this and he deserved other awards as well that he did not get just because of his politics. Keep them separate. He has done many many great things for other people and has contributed his time to help others. Just because he's a perfectionist and tells it like it is and shows the truth does not make him a bad person. I'm glad that he's honest and has the beliefs and passion for other things and people.

Unfortunately I was biased against Sean for a long time, mostly because of his marriage to attention-seeker Madonna. Whenever paparazzi pounced, he would lash out. Not a good look. Apparently he ended serving a stint in jail due to bad behaviour and admitted later that he was drunk for most of the time he and Madonna were married. Opposites shouldn't marry. She's all "look at me!" while he hates all that attention.

Was a tough choice between Penn and Murray for me, one made you laugh and cry at the same time, whilst one just shattered your heart to pieces. Well deserved none the less.

This and his performance in Milk were both amazing, Oscar-worthy performances. He's an incredibly versatile actor.

I saw Mystic River last night. Sean Penn is a brilliant actor. I was moved by his performance in the film, especially on the part when he found out what happened to his daughter. That broke my heart! Truly deserving this recognition.

Penn's performance is absolutely riveting and is one of the best performances ever on screen. The way he captured loss and the slippery slope of revenge that comes from grief in a modern day MacBeth that was Mystic River.....inspirational.

I haven't seen Mystic River yet but it doesn't matter how well Sean Penn acts in this film, I think Johnny Depps acting is that kind of performance which is revolutionary and stands the test of time

I'm aware of how many times he's been nominated, but his performance in Lost in Translation was deeper, more touching, and more expert than the other four actors in this category combined. Further, there are countless other times he could have been nominated but wasn't due to an obvious Academy bias against comedians: The Life Aquatic, Hyde Park on Hudson, Broken Flowers, The Royal Tenenbaums, Groundhog Day, Rushmore, and too many more to list here.

Josef Hautala The deadpan expression, that's just Bill Murray's face. For a comedian like Bill, who's famous for his nonchalance and quick wit, this was a completely different, subtle performance from him. His expression in every scene, and the way he portrays a fading Hollywood star, who is obviously not to enthusiastic about doing a foreign commercial for some quick cash in the film, I felt it was Murray's best work.

Except for Adrien Brody, I disagree. Denzel won because of politics and black Oscar year considering Russell Crowe won all the other 4/5 major awards. Russell Crowe should have won for A Beautiful Mind. For the year Russell won for Gladiator, Christian Bale gave a far more memorable and exceptional performance than literally anyone that year in American Psycho. For the year Penn won, I don't know. I believe that Murray should have won.

@Victoria Okoshone That was a factor as well but in either case it was not a very well deserved Oscar honestly especially over Russell Crowe and Tom Wilkinson. True that Denzel got this one because he lost for both Malcolm X and Hurricane which should have been his wins but to think about it, Sydney Poitier got his honorary award that night. Halle Berry(great performance) won over Nicole Kidman(Moulin Rouge!) and Naomi Watts(Mulholland Drive) which were superior performances. Coincidence, I guess not.

Sean Penn won the CC and Drama GG, Bill Murray won the BAFTA and Comedy GG and Johnny Depp won the SAG. I would say it was close but not a surprise for Penn.

Bill Murray and Ben Kingsley were devastatingly good that year.

One of my 2 or 3 favorite performances in cinema history.

I had the honor of being at 2 book readings of Sean Penn. What a great day. I cherish the memory and if I never get to cross paths again/ thank you Sean.

I think all these actors are great and not everyone can win and it was about time for Sean. He should have also won for an older movie called at close range that also has his brother ,mother , and grandmother in it and it was based on a true story. It's brilliant.

Patty J I only knew Sean's brother chris was in it. I didn't know his mom and grandmother was in it. His mom was also in another movie he did with Robin Wright too his ex wife.

He is one of my all time favorite actors. As soon as I watched hos performance in this movie, almost 20 yrs ago, I knew he would be nominated for an Oscar. I am so glad he won another one for "Milk". I would love to see him win a 3rd in his career.

Bill Murray has a lot to be proud for. He doesn't need to worry that he lost to Sean Penn

@@tomt6142 I think the original comment is based upon the fact that Bill Murray appeared to be upset that he lost. The camera pointed to all the other nominees who lost and they all appeared genuinely happy for Sean Penn but Bill didn't even go the gracious applause that most people do when they lose. He looked very upset that he lost so apparently, based on his facial expression and lack of applause for Sean Penn, Bill himself was worrying that he lost to Sean Penn. No one actually said it, his reaction basically did.

When I heard him say "Clint Eastwood", my first thought was: Legend !!

His acting,in Mystic river .was professionally incredible 👏 😍 🙌 ❤ ..

I just rewatched Mystic River and Sean Penn was amazing.

How much happy Johnny depp was 😂😂

Bill Murray appears to be just sad. I actually would have given the Oscar to him and not Penn. Reason? the same reason I would have given the Oscar to Charles Chaplin, Cary Grant, Peter Sellers...They all managed to make you laugh and cry in the same movie, and that's the most difficult acting job, because that's reality. That's life.

Fabian Patrizio True. And comedy AND drama rolled into one is the hardest. Which is why Murray, Sellers and Chaplin all deserved an Oscar for best acting.

He's a true social justice warrior. His CORE Relief in Haiti has helped 800k people with housing and his work leads the entire country in covid relief. 🙏 Thank you Sean. You are the best. People need to wake up. He's done more for the planet than any actor ever.

Let's just say Lost in translation wouldn't have existed without Bill Murray's performance. He was the REAL winner.

Love that he mentioned Giamatti! Such an amazing and underrated actor!

On what people have been saying since that year, I've been saying: "No, the winner shouldn't have been Bill Murray". Now, only yesterday I finally saw Mystic River. So, now, what I say is this: Yes, the winner should have been Bill Murray.

Galentw Apparently he wasn't eligible for a nomination and even so that would have happened for the following year. Having seen his epic perf. I would loved to have seen him get a least a nomination. :D

Johnny depp created a character that is and will always be infamous. Mystic river wasn’t bad but it definitely wasn’t pirates and when it comes to characters captain Jack wins every time by a landslide. IMO this one should’ve gone to Johnny

I'm still impressed that Johnny Depp received a nomination for his role in "Pirates of the Caribbean". He created an iconic and classic character as Jack Sparrow. But, Sean Penn really evoked a heart wrenching feeling in "Mystic River".

Guys I think bill Murray should have won. Sean Penn was awesome I agree. But lost in translation had something special. Bill's controlled acting deserved him this Oscar. I hope bill wins somewhere in the future.
