My review of a Malaysian Bidor Golok (s71.co/3lTO7vQ), with handle upgrade done by MyParang.com. 5160 Steel, 12.25 inch blade length. Glad you like it! That's one of the batons I carve with my Estwng Carpenter's Hatchet. I take the biggest toughest piece of firewood and carve a handle on it.

As a Malaysian, feel proud that Malaysian product being recognized, and those parang and golok also comes with kydex sheath if I’m not mistaken, but at a little higher price point, and they also make like a set with morakniv knife and a firesteel

I have one of the unmodified plastic handled goloks. It alongside the parang are my favorite large fixed blades.

I've been using one of these for 4-5 years now and love it. I usually alternate between it and a terava skrama 200. I use the golok when I need a fire and bring the skrama when a fire would be nice to have. The fully enclosed wooden handle on the golok really shines in winter here in New England.

This golok pattern are the must bring tool when every malaysian go to jungle or any harvesting work. It's very effective, easy to sharping and light weight..also durable

Malaysian parang or golok users carve wood by placing your hand nearer to the neck of the blade where the blade nearest your hand are usually honed much sharper for delicate carving/cutting works.

Nice blades. I found a video of the blacksmiths making these. I was won over by it and the reviews so I purchased a 120 plastic handle and the my parang 125 and 130 gifting the 125 to a friend. I think of the two wooden handled ones, the 125 swings faster due to the blade being an inch shorter thus lighter and is my pick of the two as it is easier to recover from a swing. The 120 plastic handle is wrapped in tennis grip tape and swings like lightning and is my personal favorite. It would make an excellent self defense tool as it shears through material once sharpened up to a fresh edge.

I wouldn’t really baton with them too violently - at the end of the day they have a rattail tang, and even with the pin and epoxy I think they can eventually come loose or worst case snap at the pinhole. There is a point to the rattail, it absorbs shock when chopping and makes for a good balance when chopping so it’s a feature, but it also means it’s not a crowbar. I own a 8, 10 and 10 inch duku from bidor and they’re great tools. I use them mainly in temperate to arctic conditions on hikes rather than lugging an axe around. It’s just more versatile and not as heavy, and I really don’t need to be cutting down bigger trees or processing great amounts of firewood. I pair it with a multitool, a mora type knife and a small folding saw, and that’s kinda that in terms of tools for hiking. Especially in the arctic where wood is often kinda sparse, or of limited size and is mostly limited to softer woods like birch or pine - there is no real need for an axe.

The 12in blade is my favourit for hikeing in the jungle

Somehow I never get bored of seeing another large fixed blade. :) I see you modded the grip of the BK-9. I put some micarta scales on mine for the same reason. They should come with those from factory. lol

That would be good! I have relatives in Manila. I hope some company can one day import some of these Filipino blades and sell them in the USA, like the Malaysian and Nepalis do with their blades. Authentic barongs would sell very well here.

I've been eying this brand for awhile, but have yet to pull the trigger mainly cause they're priced and use similar materials as Condor but you don't get the nice leather sheath Condor typically provides.

@@WeAllJuggleKnives Yeah their prices been going up over the past years, but a lot of their stuff is in the same price range as these(wish they were still $50-60 like they were back when I first started buying them!). Stuff like the Mountain Pass Machete, Departure Bolo, Australian Army Machete, Polar North Machete, various others are at least still in this range...though if they keep going up I may switch over to these guys.

@@outdoordyn You kinda missed the point. Condor uses similar materials and is priced similarly, so the "task" is pretty much the same, the difference is the Condor also includes a nice sheath.

Bidor parang maker is a reputable no nonsense blacksmith … most of their parangs are meant for local use ie cheaper and not so good looking but they get the jobs done … this design is synonymous to the Malays of the Peninsular as opposed to the chandong which is typical in Borneo tribes … usage wise they’re about the same ie robustness and a tool many of us don’t leave behind when out in the jungle … both designs have their merits …myself, I’ve used the Malay parang all my life and only these few years changed to the chandong as the rat tail design without a locking pin is a failure … my chandong by Bidor is a plain plastic handle with a locking pin which I found more secure … the plastic handle is not so good but last a lifetime imho … btw, handling a parang is different from swinging an axe , one needs to utilize the wrist action, otherwise you’d end up tired easily without any real gain … I guess I’m used to it anyway …

Also, Ysrael, would you be interested in designing and building a knife/machete, with the knowledge and experiences you have shown us through the years? I recently took a forging class and it was a very educational experience! I am willing to bet there is a company out there that would give serious credence to whatever input you may have.
