    This franchise is actually pretty impressive at this point in time because this one and the next are both Live-Action movie Debuts for their directors. This was JJ Abrahams first big budget movie as he was more a director for TV before this movie. Tom Cruise actually brought him on board. The next one is directed by Brad Bird who only directed animated movies before. He directed quite a few classics most notably for this context The Incredibles from Pixar. I do think MI is at a very good point now but I also do miss this era where they changed the director and style for each movie and even took some big risks with their choice of the director

  • @aarons.2323

    @aarons.2323

    That's what I miss, too. I even remember Tom saying earlier on that was the whole point of the franchise. However, after this one it definitely seemed like they found a groove that worked for them, and the tone doesn't change at all from this point forward, really. Ghost Protocol just had to prove that the series was still a viable franchise, because 3 didn't do that great because Tom Cruise was acting pretty weird during the promotion of this movie and I think it turned a lot of people away (the Oprah couch jump, most notably). After that I think the series has found the characters we all like, and knows exactly what we want from these movies as a whole: Crazy stunts, Tom Cruise running, enjoyable supporting characters, some emotional stakes, and a nice bow wrapped around it all at the end.

    MI3 gave us two of the best Returning characters in Ving Rhames and Simon Pegg but I think the interrogation/Mask Pull in this was one of the most underrated scenes in the series because it's truly the only moment in the series where Ethan had no tricks to pull out and was truly at the mercy of a great villian.

    Just had to pause midway to comment how much I'm enjoying yer enthusiasm during this watchalong, so thanks for that. Fun fact: that opener with Davian wasn't originally there, the movie originally started with the house party... at some point, wanting a bit more oomph for the opener, they just outright grabbed that chunk of a scene and plopped it at the beginning. The amazing thing is that the script/dialogue still plays out perfectly, untouched.

    Normally, I have your videos on in the background as noise while I work on my projects, but Mission Impossible III is one of my favorites of the series. It was my #1 Mission film until Fallout - you'll see why when you get to that one. Some fun stunt facts for you: In the first Mission: Impossible, Tom Cruise had to use coins in his shoes to balance out his weight to keep from touching the floor during the wire stunt in CIA Headquarters In Mission: Impossible II, that is really Tom Cruise doing free rock climbing In this movie, the pendulum swing was done in a sound stage where he jumped 40ft off a platform to perform the swing. The guy is a madman, but it makes for great scenes.

    The windmill scene was filmed at the wind farm outside of Palm Springs CA. And they flew real helicopters insanely close to real windmills. But not close enough for the intent of the shot so there are a handfull that were added in with VFX (CG and practical models). If you want to see some truly insane stuff, look into the hollywood helicopter pilots. They fly the camera choppers, often a mere 10 ft above the ground, down city streets, under overpasses, etc to get the most ridiculously awesome shots. Most of them are veterans who flew in various wars and they operate WAY WAY outside of the normal FAA safety laws in terms of how low and how close to things they are allowed to fly. Several of them have instagram accounts they post to regularly.

    I am so excited for you guys to watch the stuntwork in the next three films the franchise has become known for- I need Jen to know that Tom Cruise is really doing every major insane stunt you see him doing, whether it be climbing buildings, holding his breath, riding motorcycles, or other more spoilery activities

    "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall" is one of the most wtf moments in a movie I've seen. So bizarre. Then it's followed by Hunt disguising himself as a holy man in complete disregard of the Geneva Convention. 😂

    Yeh MI:3 was pretty good.... got to see Tom do his famous running in that Shanghai scene. Number four (next one) is my favourite one next to the first one. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is just brilliant in ANY movie he's in. He's such a great actor. :)

    That "in medias res" tactic used at the start of the movie is a JJ Abrams staple. He used it constantly throughout Alias and Lost so its really no surprise he used it here. I always found it to be a cheap tactic to get the audience's interest since it blows what comes later. One other thing: for the third straight Mission Impossible movie, they used the IMF traitor as the primary villain. First it was Jim Phelps. Then it was Ambrose. And now it was Billy Crudup, albeit this time he was the "misguided patriot" trope. Fortunately this was the last time they used that idea in the franchise. Still it was a fun movie overall.
