To me, Rogue Nation is a real testament to the writing and Chris McQ's directorial skills which increased 10x in fallout. Any other writer or director would have definitely given the plane scene in the third act as the big bombastic finale, but they opted for the smaller yet more thrilling one and man I cannot wait for the next one.

Rogue Nation is my favorite of the franchise. The scene during the opera is a master class in film making and one of my favorite scenes in film history. It's so good. Ilsa Faust is such a great addiiton to the franchise.
He actually needed to hold his breath for about 5 minutes but trained and managed to do 6, they needed to wait for airbubbles to go out of frame to start filming etc. So its costing him 30 sec. to a minute already just to wait to start filming and do the scene

This is the Christopher McQuarrie era of MI films, where he writes and directs all of them forward, kinda like how the Harry Potter films went with David Yates. These are the best made ones, but see the reception you guys had, I think the interruptions really affected it. But man, Fallout is even better, and since then, Tom and Chris have been making bangers together for years since.

Rogue Nation is actually my second most favorite MI movie in the franchise with Fallout being in first place. Also in hindsight this movie and its storyline will make a bit more sense in a way after you watch Fallout. But just wait till you guys get to the next movie, you’ll be absolutely mind blown by what’s to come and it contains some of my most favorite scenes in the entire franchise as well!
For those curious, Christopher McQuarrie had mentioned that Maggie Q and Paula Patton were both asked if they would be interested in returning for this one, but both had scheduling conflicts. McQuarrie wanted to include links to each of the previous films in this one. Some examples include the dialogue exchange between Ethan and the relay in the telephone booth is the same dialogue from the first movie. Ethan going on a motorcycle chase references the second film. Ethan dying and being revived references the third movie. And directly leading in from the nuke crashing into the harbor picks up from the last movie. When I saw this in theaters, I ended up going a random night the last week it was playing in a small theater with a relative. We ended up having the entire theater to ourselves.

Genuinely, the trailer for MI: Fallout is a masterpiece in itself with Friction by Imagine Dragons playing along Sean Harris’s monologue
This is one of the best reactions. I loved seeing the hatred for AT&T in real-time
This review definitely surprised me! Rogue one is one of my fav MI film because it’s a complete mission impossible film. The villain is calculated. The femme fatale is very much a femme fatale because we never knew her allegiance. The whole film is a cat and mouse game and every one is trying to get one step ahead of each other. I loved the clever writing and the shots. The pacing was exactly how it was meant to be. We have to trying to figure out who is one step ahead and not tell where anything can go.

I think this is my favorite one. That motorcycle scene is one of the best i've ever.
This is my second favorite mission impossible behind fallout and I think the AT&T stuff definitely factored into your opinions on the movie. Especially since a lot of your critiques were about it not being as good in the second half after at&t cut out. This one is definitely one that doesn’t give you much breathing time when you’re watching it all at once so I think having it cut in and out and then completely stop for what seemed like at least 30 minutes definitely detracted from the non stop feeling of this one
I watched this a couple of days ago (hadn't seen this one) and boy - AWESOME. The water/car chase/motorbike chase sequence was perfection. Rebecca Ferguson is a revelation.
Im very suprised to your guys reaction here. Maybe it was the interpretations you guys were getting. I personally think this is ome of, it not, the best one. The action, and script were on point. I thought Ilsa had the most fleshed out character of all the female protagonists in the series. I also thought comradery between the team was at its best.

I absolutely agree. I don't understand how they prefer the first two, especially the second one over this one. Ilsa is easily the best MI female lead, Benji gets more of a role, and I love the villain. To each they're own, but I still don't understand they're especially Jen's logic.
MI - 7.5/10 (memorable moments and great directing) MI2 - 5/10 (so over the top and stupid) MI3 - 8/10 (it had better plot, characters and was full of emotions overall) MI4 - 9/10 (the most impossible mission) MI5 - 10/10 (great plot, great script: especially in the third act)

@@thebkg I respect your opinion but I have to disagree, the way Ritchson played Reacher far outweighs Tom's even in prowess and investigative aptitude. With Tom is just felt more "Sherlock Holmes"y (the RDJ one) where his awareness felt more like some Hollywood precognition more than anything else. I will say I may be coming at this very biased simply because of who Tom Cruise is and how every movie with him just feels like he's playing Tom Cruise -- so my opinion is certainly rigged lol
Gotta be honest I think you guys would have enjoyed it better without the interruptions. Sounds like most of the things you were disappointed by could have been aggravated by that, such as the story and plot. Jen also usually likes all the twists and gadgets and stuff that this movies has, and as you mentioned the stunts are great. MI: RN is at the very least way better than MI: 2, and probably 3 IMO.
Rogue Nation is just my absolute favorite in the franchise. It's a true spy movie.
MI:Fallout, to me, is The Dark Knight of this franchise. The stakes are even bigger, the cinematography(and Chris McQuarrie’s filmmaking, in general) got a major upgrade and is gorgeous and Lorne Balfe’s score is killer especially his version of the MI theme!

Sorry to hear you guys didn't like this one. It's one of my faves. Up there with the first movie, for sure. The action really got me and the story was so good. I feel like Fallout tried to reach that level but didn't quite "make it". This definitely rates high for me. :)

Huh, fallout to me has always been the epitome of storytelling in MI.
The Holden vs AT&T saga has turned into Mission Impossible: Rogue Internet.
This movie is definitely top 3 of the franchise. Only bettered by the 1st one and fallout in my opinion. The story in this one bleeds in to fallout and dead reckoning part 1. The storytelling from rogue nation onwards is just better than anything that came before mcquarrie's return to the franchise is one of its greatest blessings
@greatarchitect

MI3, ghost protocol, fallout. That's the top 3 in no particular order
This is my favourite one, the ending is just classic.
The Mission Impossible franchise so far has struck a perfect balance between great action set pieces and interesting plots without feeling far-fetched or stupid. They know they want to be Popcorn movies and set out to be good ones. They managed that in spades. And I have faith that Tom Cruise will know when to stop making them and then come up with a good send-off for Ethan Hunt, as opposed to people like Harrison Ford who think it is a good idea to revisit their old characters at age 80 as long as that 25 Million paycheck is in the mail. By the way: I don't know how far in advance you film these before release, so let me just wish you guys all the best for the upcoming birth and that it will be uncomplicated and fast.
I feel that a lot of this comes down to what people want to see out of this series, and for general audiences, it comes down to the stunts. The Burj Khalifa sequence really made a huge impression on people, and I think next to that, Rogue Nation seems somewhat understated. Which is exactly why I loved this movie. Rogue Nation represents a tonal shift away from the more comedic Ghost Protocol. Ilsa's allegiances being unclear is just par for the course - it's going to happen if you watch spy films. The circumstances definitely impacted your reactions, how can it not?
I'm sorry, but saying "Rogue Nation is the worst M:I movie" is downright fucking insane, lol.
Whenever anyone tells me that the internet in Canada is intolerably slow & inadequate, I think of Holden’s AT&T saga and smile to myself at how reliable it has been for me; never going out on me, unless the whole power went out, even with three different internet providers over two decades.
Director : Let's USE CGI Tom: I am CGI ( Cruise Going Insane)
This is my favourite Mission Impossible movie and one of my favourite action movie.
The opening stunt was incredible. The "mission" in this one was to save the IMF itself.
Rogue Nation is my personal favorite of the franchise
Rogue Nation is the second best in the franchise. On the edge of your seat from the beginning to end with almost a perfect script. Love that UK prime minister scene. To see someone said it is boring is unreal to me.
This was the first MI film that I ever saw, and it got me completely hooked on this series. Christopher McQuarrie did a fantastic job directing this, and you definitely understand why he's ended up directing the rest of the series. The action scenes and stunts are incredible and exciting, while sequences like the opera house scene are legitimately suspenseful. The team dynamic, as established in the last film, remains as strong here, Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa was a great addition to the cast, and the film's villain was really great too. In my opinion anyway, this was another big step up in quality for the series after Ghost Protocol already took the series from being "decent" to "great", and it's only going to get even better with Fallout
19:10 - You know AT&T dun gone and effed up when you have a sequential sigh from both Holdman and Jen.
I don’t understand how your wife doesn’t like this one, to me it was awesome, better then the last, new characters still old characters, maybe it’s her pregnancy clouding her thought process, I appreciate you going to the store and buying the movies, have your wife watch this again after the baby is born
A good demonstration of why internet is perfect to download, imperfect to stream. You might wanna take the other road...
This is why physical media will always be better than digital or streaming.
I did not think they could top Ghost Protocol, but they did. And Fallout is another beast of itself. And Rebecca Ferguson stole every scene that she was a part of.
Hard disagree with Jen and Holden (respectfully ofc). It may surprise people but I don’t like the Mission Impossible 1 very much 😂. I love Fallout, 3, Rogue Nation in that order. Rogue Nation and Fallout are INCREDIBLE world class FILMMAKING! Edited by the master editor, Eddie Hamilton. I don’t care as much about gadgets and missions as much as I do about character arcs. Specifically complex ones. Perhaps it’s also because I have just never been as into spy films. So I latch on to the character stories in these films and editing. I love Ilsa Faust. I love the opera and motorcycle chase sequences so much.
Holden, the AT&t situation was a perfect time to input a clip of Anakin screaming I hate you....
A good bonus to having this as your job is that you can write the M:I collection off 😂
I'm sure the struggle to watch this had a big impact on enjoyment. This one is great!
This is one of the biggest reason's I still buy physical media for the stuff I want to own and see when I want to. Streaming is fine, but internet providers can sometimes be quite a pain. I feel your pain with AT&T.
This is why I buy DVDs to watch my movies, instead of watching them via streaming site.

Tom back at it again with crazy stunts, the plane and water scene
Rogue Nation is arguably the best Mission Impossible since the original movie. I never thought a spy movie could have an underwater sequence that was so timelessly effective. I never thought the movie could top that sequence with a car and motorcycle chase. Plus I love how they entrapped that prick Atley with the Prime Minister. And i love how the climax of the film has nothing to do with a nuclear explosion. That plotline is getting so old. They brilliantly captured Solomon Lane and I did not see that coming
"What brings you to Casablanca?" is such a beautiful moment in the world of cinema. I love the fact that the actor playing the big baddie didn't want the role and repeatedly kept turning Cruise down. He finally said yes on the condition that his character gets to die at the end of the movie, and they agreed. Lol, in the end they loved his performance so much they kept him alive. If AT&T did their job this would all be Mission: A Walk In The Park ;)
Between this and Fallout are my favorite. How anyone sees 2 above these is nuts haha.
Ghost Protocol is still also my favourite. This one was great though. The plane stunt was amazing and he did it so many times. They had to completely clear the runway of debris and he had to have eye protection. A stone hitting you at that speed would kill you. I love the scene but uh I still prefer to travel inside the plane.
That's the thing about villains, they don't usually worry about fair vs unfair.
Tom Cruise actually did the plane stunt 6 times to get the shot right. The plan was just for one but when they landed Tom just kept saying "One more!"
The most fascinating thing about the MI series is how widely varied all its fans perceive the different movies. The style of each had been different enough that what audience members value changes how they rate one movie from another. While that's not unusual in itself, the MI series tends to draw these differences out with such a distinction that makes it quite unique. For me Rogue Nation is my favorite thus far because of the 4D Chess Ethan and Lane seem to play throughout the movie. MI 3 is my least favorite by far, I honestly dislike it. MI 2 doesn't bother me as much as it does many ppl. Yes, many of the stunts are way over the top, but I enjoyed it.
Cruise was wired in, but it was just a single line. Still a hella brave stunt.
Finally I was waiting this😭😭😭❤
Great that they got the Chancellor of Austria to deliver a Monty Python Black Knight reference in German.
